View Full Version : Facelift for the 245

I got a flathood and the associated gear a few weeks ago for free :)
So I got round to fitting it today with some help from my dad. The adjusting was a pain in the arse, and the hood kept getting jammed shut, so with some micro adjustments of the catch mechanism we finally get it to open, but I might get hood pins instead..

P.s. I am prepping the 245 for new paint, hence the rub down.

Old ugly quads out, and new buckets in.

Here are the candles. Hella lenses and some really nice blue tinted HID bulbs...>>>sealed beam quads.

Though this looked cool because of that sexy intercooler. I am driving with the grill off for the short term, because I do not want that hood jamming and risk breaking the grill I spent hours mending.

You should do real HIDs. Otherwise, it looks good.

True, down the road I think I will..excuse the pun. I can tell these bulbs are not as bright as they could be, but compared to the stock sealed beams they are night and day.

Those blue colored H4's are nothing more good than for decoration of the lights and to diffuse poorer lighting down the road , which when you truely need the better H4 lighting is wasted.. I been there, done that.

A clear H4 is the only way to go in my opinion. Blu-ish light doesn't fare well at all.

Also, I bet you have a 2 volt reduction on your stock lighting wiring , making a relay , lighting harness will net great improvements too.

What Andy said. I tried the blue ones many moons ago. Glad I decided to switch to clear H4 bulbs. Much better...

Might be worth checking the Daniel Stern Lighting page out for bulbs, etc... With relays, you can probably run 130/100 bulbs in the 7" round housings...

I've seen lots of orange flathoods, I've never seen an orange 80- 242 though...

Yeah I am going to make a new lighting harness, as it stands the low beams are marginal (but better) and the high beams are definitely better. But compared to proper HID's they are WEAK. A new harness should net some improvement. I have some clear H4's too, so I will have to give them a go.
Thanks for the input.

This flat hood was off an orange mid 70's 245.

Why is everyone hatin on the quads these days? It's cool, but I am glad I went back to quads...

Not necessarily hating on the quads. But the stock lights themselves do suck testes at night...and whenever I see the quad rounds on an ugly as old 80's american car I think of my poor wagon and decided to change that.

I love the quads....more so then the single headlights. But the round headlights are sharp!

7" rounds 763 FTW! You just need to build a 745, put a whiteblock 6cyl in it, weld the two rear doors shut, then put that plate on it.

There are 7'' with halos too.

I have a relay kit for bulbs that I'll give you for $free.99 next time you're over this way.

I sold my 240 ecodes but kept the daniel stern relay kit because I figured I'd need it for my 940, which I set aside money for for eCodes right off the bat. Then I found a car that I purchased that happened to already have them...
For lighting, currently I have a set of H4's in 160/130, a set of H1 seperate highs in 160, and yeah, needless to say, it's FANTASTIC. I had the unfortunate pleasure of walking back up the road towards my car with the high beams on and it was like staring into the sun.
Keep in mind that those ratings are good, but not totally accurate as they will lose wattage due to the fact the car will never supply that much electricity.

Otherwise, it looks good assuming you paint the hood too, I see far too many cars where the owners think the flathood looks all amazing in flat black or a completely different colour. While you're at it, paint the old hood too if it's not much more, just because you never really know, and I'd rather have a coffin hod painted to match should the worse ever happen. Just my $0.02.
This car has come a long way, and a lot further then I ever would have taken it, glad it found a loving home!

LOL

It's funny you say that...

My plate had me thinking about doing dirty, dastardly, terrible things to a 780...
I think a 780 with a 940 front end with euro headlights would look perfect.
I was actually all excited at the insurance agent's office and I started flicking through...
936,
937
938
939
941 -
DAMN!

942
943
946
GODDAMNIT!

*flip*

959
961
crappy...
962
963
966
WTF!?

So I settled on 942 - which for me would've been the BEST Volvo ever built (IMO)

Also, if I ever do a heavily custom 142, if I ever find the right car, I was thinking of deleting the ugly huge turn signals and going this route:

A 240 with the front signals either deleted or also functional might look good that way too.

Hey fige, find me a nice 142 with a crazy patina on it, dub style?

Brett, one of the guys in Oregon did that on his '72. Turned the city lights in his H4's into turn signals. Besides, I think I'd just start with a '72 anyway. Doesn't have the "ergonomic nightmare" dash, and already has the huge turn signals/parking lights removed.

could have been yours for $100  too bad it's a 145
It ran, rolled, and interior didn't look too shabby either. But the smoked windows might have been a problem

Hey, Brett
Cheers for the offer! I already have a couple of headlight relays sitting around though, so I will just make the harness for the roundies up when I get back to vic next week and see how they look with a bit more voltage.
Thanks for the compliment. I am definitely going to be painting the whole car the same colour! I too do not like the off colour hood at all. Black CAN look ok on some cars, but it's rarely done properly.
I endeavour to get some paint on around August 8th, so will post pics then.
Cheers

I did a relay thing for my 245...then again it already had the one relay inside...i wasnt really loosing voltage, but i did it anyway. But I also moved the high beam relay inside too, If ya wanna rid some of the wiring under the hood. I put 2 fuse holders, the high beam relay and the headlight relays under the dash. Came out all right

I would gladly give a new life to those quads.

jamin01
07-31-2009, 12:42 AM
Volvorod, yeah that's a good way to keep the bay little cleaner if you found place to hide the relays under the dash. I will prob mount them next to the terminals next to the battery though for ease.

Vanapeer, if you want them, they are yours, just pay shipping. Pm'd.

I like the qaud rec's on both the 7's and 2's, and then on the 2's the e-codes come second and then the 7" rounds, then last is the quad rounds as they look horrible. But I like having good high beam as well, which means running two lamps to get that.
this is what I am doing... but shhh. don't tell anyone :shh:
That Golf has this turn signal in the bumper still.

I've tried searching, but nothing came up. Where did you get those headlamps? I thought the single rounds used sealed beams.

jamin01
08-04-2009, 01:07 AM
Hey Evo.
I think the stock single rounds were sealed beams, but I got those lenses from an auto-parts store here in Victoria. They are made by Hella, and are your standard 7" round lenses, so you should be able to get them pretty easily. They cost me $95 CAN but I get some discount, so they are probably closer to $130 CAN.

Daniel Stern Lighting also sells 7" round drop-in H4 headlamps... As does iPd, etc. I currently have a pair of Marchal 7" round H4's in my '85 245. Bought them used, one @ iPd, the other off eBait.

Cool, thanks for the info. Not to get off topic, but are there H4 housings that drop in for the quad squares? If not, the flat hood/single round conversion just got more attractive.

jamin01
08-06-2009, 06:37 PM
That conversion has always been more attractive :-P
I am pretty sure you can get non sealed quads, I'd be surprised if you couldn't, but I really don't know because I never bothered to look into it.
