View Full Version : Why EDIS instead of the 60-2 Volvo wheels?

Dumb question of the morning: why is everyone after the EDIS wheels when going to MS/whatever instead of using the 60-2 wheels (flywheel/flexplate) found in LH 2.4 Volvos? Easier to find? Just looks cooler? Because everyone does it?

Depends on the situation.

Some people use the 36-1 because they don't want to tear apart their transmission to install one of the Volvo trigger-wheel equipped flywheels/flexplates.

Some people use the 36-1 because the volvo 60-2 flywheel is f-ing massive and relatively hard to come by.

Keep in mind, the 36-1 wheel is just a trigger wheel. A megasquirt person doesn't have to use EDIS to use the trigger wheel.

I personally am glad I've got a EMS that allows you to mount your crankshaft pickup wherever you want. It saves me from having to find those stupid 2.4 flywheels. Then you gotta have it lightened.. and it's gotta be done right.. etc..

Please explain this. I plan to use the trigger wheel on the crank pulley with the EDIS sensor... is there a better way?

Run the sensor to MS, set it up for 36-1 wheel decoding, and have it run wasted spark using an EDIS coil pack. This allows you to do a few things that EDIS itself won't let you do, since EDIS wants to spark all the time and only wants some advance input.

Doing it that way allows you to do things in MS that skip sparks, like launch control, flat shift, rev limiter, anti-lag (heh, who here has actually used that?).

i use the ford edis modual since it was my first install and made it super easy. i dont have or know how to set up the launch control or flatshift, but i do have a revlimiter, its spark cut only but im happy now that i have a fully programable system and now my 1980 242 is now turbo'ed with real FI.

The bonus of edis is indeed the simplicity. It has built in dwell control that is correct for the matching edis coil packs, so you know everything from a coil and coil drive standpoint is coordinated correctly.

IMO if you have the edis stuff already and are a first-timer, use it. It makes for a few less variables to have to worry about.

You can even run an engine on EDIS by just spraying starter fluid if the trigger is on right. It's super simple to set up and just flat out works. If it's your first install, it's worth a first and second look.
