Hi all, I'm putting together an all euro cruise in NorCal along highway 1 from Pescadero to Big Sur on November 7th and would love to see some Volvo guys there. This has been cross posted on various other euro forums as well and it looks like we've already got a good bit of interest. Feel free to cross post this yourself as well should I miss a forum.
What: A scenic cruise down California State Route 1 from Pescadero to Big Sur.
When: Saturday, November 7th starting at ~10:30am (drive starts at ~11:00am)
Who: Any euro car is encouraged to come out; however, if yours is out of commission, feel free to roll in your sisters Camry. Just park it away from the crowd and drive towards the back of the pack for picture taking purposes.
Route & Itinerary: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=...h&z=8 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=CA-1%2FCabrillo+Hwy&daddr=CA-1%2FCoast+Rd+to:Lee+Rd+to:36.522573,-121.927012+to:Big+Sur,+CA+93920+(Highway+1+%2F++Ri ver+Inn)&geocode=FbSJOAIdhB-0-A%3BFVCXNAIdnqy3-A%3BFQb1MgIdl9W9-A%3B%3BFR5xKQIdOlu9-CEoKgUoc4n1fQ&hl=en&mra=mi&mrcr=2,3&mrsp=3&sz=17&sll=36.522984,-121.925862&sspn=0.001173,0.006813&safe=on&ie=UTF8&ll=36.81808,-121.816406&spn=1.262038,3.488159&t=h&z=8)
10:30am - Meet at Pescadero beach
11:00am - Depart Pescadero
Stop at Bonny Doon beach in Bonny Doon for photos etc.
Stop in Watsonville for gas/snacks/bathroom.
Stop at Monastery beach in Carmel for photos etc.
ETA 2:00pm - End trip in Big Sur @ the River Inn, optional lunch. http://www.bigsurriverinn.com/
FRS Radios: Radios, if you have them, should be set to channel 13.3
----------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE:
If it rains really really hard, or if the group looks too big to fit into the parking lots we will touch and go at the Bonny Doon and Carmel waypoints. Meaning we'll slow down to a crawl, let anyone meeting up with us mesh into the caravan, and bring it back up to speed without actually pulling into the parking lot. If you plan on meeting us at either of these these locations, please be prepared for this. I'll try to radio a couple miles ahead. However, we will still meet/stop in Pescadero, Watsonville, and Big Sur regardless of group size or rain.

Sure. Romantic is driving a Volvo, following a bunch of air cooled VW's down the coast suffocating on their exhaust?
Not that I dislike air cooled VW's, quite the opposite, but I do not like following them.

Actually, I'm thinking it will mostly be 1980's and up watercooled cars as far as the VW's go. It's hard to get the aircooled guys out of the garage. :grrr:
They are really their own little scene. I find that you're more likely to get BMW and Audi guys to hang out with water cooled VW folks than you are to get air cooled guys to hang out with water pumpers. Which is weird, cuz most water cooled guys love old bugs and such.

Only 10 days away! The meet is stirring some serious interest on the VWVortex, E30tech, NorCale30, GolfmkV, and SwedeSpeed forums if anyone is looking for folks to caravan to the meet with. :)
I'm estimating about 20 people right now, but you never know. Sometimes 20 people post, but 50 show up.

Sweet! :)
By the way, were any of you at the Marina Auto-X last weekend? I just looked at the results on NorCalUFO.org and noticed a few folks put down "TurboBricks" under club affiliation.
Who was that guy drifting the course in his Volvo sedan? That thing was awesome! :oogle:

I am an aircooled VW guy and a Volvo guy, and I have owned a few watercooled VWs. I have gone to several watercooled VW meets all around the bay area with my aircooled cars, but I have never enjoyed one of them. The biggest complaint I have about the watercooled VW scene is that the folks aren't as much into the mechanical aspects of their cars (like internal engine components, custom fabricated suspension components, major body modifications). They seem to be more into stereos, coil overs, vinyl stickers, and insanely expensive wheels. Which I am not saying is a bad thing, but to someone who is more into the mechanical aspects, it seems trivial to be discussing body kits or polished 2.0 intakes.
I've heard the older guys with more stock aircooled cars complain about waterpumper events because they can't keep up with the 100mph+ caravans, and end up getting ditched. And they're not fond of watching burnouts in parking lots, listening to loud bass, and getting kicked out. Me personally, I don't mind that part of it at all. In fact I went to some watercooled events simply because I heard these complaints and wanted to hunt down some Golfs with my Ghia! But in the end, I have more fun taking my 58 bug to autocrosses or on drives through the mountains alone.
Just trying to give the other side of the story. Sounds like a cool event though. If my wife won't mind watching the baby alone that day, I'll try and head out there in our WRX-powered 914 and check it out.

Yeah, it depends on who you're hangin' out with, but I totally know what you mean. There is a significant subset of folks in the Watercooled VW scene that fit your description.
With that said, my buddy should be bringing out his Caddy (Rabbit Pickup) with a Jetta front end, raised strut towers, Scirocco seats, hidden battery, and a 2.0L crossflow swap. It's a work in progress, but you can't say it isn't custom!
BTW: I would LOVE to see (and hear) said 914 on the drive!

what's funny is this post pretty much confirmed everything I figured about there being two kinds of VW people, and them being pretty much separate.
