View Full Version : A little headliner update to my 745

Well, I was seriously considering selling the 745 now that I have an XC70, but came to the realization that I really just like the thing too much to get rid of it. So, at this juncture, I decided to spend the winter making the 740 into the car that I have always wanted but haven't had enough time to build. I just got the car running on MS pretty nicely and felt like I needed to commit some time to aesthetics. I always figure that a nice new headliner to match my interior is a good way to go. So, here are the beginnings.

So, I'll skip all the initial disassembly because it isn't exciting. All done!

Awww. Hi old dirty headliner. You are getting updated...

...to match this:

Oh yeah. I forgot the exciting part of this project:

That's all for tonight. More pics available here:

Hopefully, I'll be spending Sunday replacing the headliner and sunroof. I'll add more pics at the project progresses.

Let me know what you think. :)

Ahh, your doing what I did, except I did it the easy way and swapped a good 97 965 black carpet type headliner in. But I should have taken the moonroof out of the 965 too...I decided to just stay with the regular sunroof.

While you have the headliner out, could you tell me where the wires are routed for the dome light. I am adding a set of foot well lights from an S90, you know the ones that light up under the dash when you open the doors, and want to tap into the wiring at the base of the A or B pillars or where ever else they are routed.

Thanks

Black headliners ftw! What fabric are you going to use?

Fabric-wise, I went with 1/8" black fabric from this site: http://www.wlsheadliners.com/cut-yardage-of-headliner-material-64-inch-wide-p-94.html

At least...I'm 90% sure that's the site. I may have used a different one with 3/16" (but I don't think so).

Anyway, today I got around to installing the new sunroof:

I strung a ratchet strap across so that I could make the removal and install a 1-man job.

Out with the old...

Reverse the removal to install.

And viola:

http://www.cornercase.net/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1952&g2_serialNumber=1

The headliner itself is almost completely stripped. So, once that process is done, I'll post up pics of the recovering and re-installation.

The wiring comes out at the top of the driver's side B-pillar. I'll investigate further to see where they go.

My wife's new V70 has the glass roof. Damn I want one now. But I finally got the steel one to stop leaking and I hate the thought of removing the headliner again.

I didn't think the old headliner would work with the glass moonroof - at least not the sliding shade?

In for updates.

Thanks. Chances are it runs to the base of the B pillar.

Hmm...might be kind of tight with the older style headliner. I know my 965 headliner just buts up against the stock steel sunroofs frame, but does not have thin rubber lip that folds over. I can take some photos if you need. Otherwise, some shims might work fine.
Looks great btw! I want to do this now...

damn, it'd be nice if you didnt have to disassemble every peice of the interior to get the thing out...

Well, we shall see about fit. I didn't research this all that heavily before trying it. I suppose I may test fit the old headliner before covering it and if it fits, cool. If not, then I'll go find a later-style one in the junkyard. But, I'm crossing my fingers that it just fits.

It will fit did this on mine stock headliner and glass sunroof, you need the plastic motor cover from the glass moonroof headliner i think though

Hey everyone, here's a little update. I finished installing the headliner. More pics can be seen in my project thread, but I thought I'd post up some of the headliner near the moonroof. It fits perfectly.

The finished product (minus miscellaneous trim pieces):

Let me know if you have any questions about the install (thought it was really very straight forward).
