View Full Version : Rattle can or roll on?

Which would give me a better finish? I've sprayed before so i know what i'm in for, and i also know that rattle canning large areas (1/3 of a car) is a bad idea (uneven finish). I was wondering if rolling would give me a better, more even finish.

depends, do you want to sand in between coats?

Rolling will be more even going on, but with a steady hand, spraying can be pretty even and if you're going to sand it anyways, it doesn't matter.

Even with sanding i find the spraypaint to be a little patchy.

Yeah, spray cans tend to look a little shoddy unless you do the work. I think it was the yellow wagon that was rollered with, and that didn't look half bad in the pics. Just prep, there is never enough prep. ****ty prep = ****ty finish.

are you tight on cash? why rattle can, thats extremely unprofessional... why dont you just use an hvlp sprayer for legit consistency and good results.. you get what you pay for. thats all i have to say.

Gabe244

Very tight on cash. Pranged the car so i had a $1000 excess then $300 for rego and more for parts. So im not liking the idea of paying another $1000 to get it sprayed, particularly when the rest of the car has been resprayed kinda shoddily (doubt it'll last long) by the PO.

Also, the windscreens have to come out, so hey, while im at it....

Spray paint is cheap, quick, and easy. It won't look very good, but it is great for covering up patched or multi-colored cars. I sprayed the sides of my car because I was just looking for coverage and decent appearance from a distance. In certain light I can see the inconsistancy in the paint even though I lightly wet sanded with 1000 grit to make it smooth to the touch. If you're planning to keep this paint job long term, I would roll it or spray it with a cheap gun and do as much sanding between coats as it needs.

It will never look as good as it does on the first day.

I'm in for spray paint. All you need is a bunch of cans of desired paint, beer and a razor blade. I didn't even tape my car. Its totally canned. Its lasted all summer, and as for prep work, I got drunk. I didn't wash the car, I just wiped the old paint with a cloth, and sprayed. It was forest green from the factory, and I wanted a black car cheap and easy.

The finish on my car looks the same dirty as it does clean. I didn't do any other work, and as its been washed a couple times, its getting 'smoother'. In the direct sun you can see the spottyness.

You can totally rattle can a car and it will look fine...Prep and good can control. Spraycan painting is almost an art form. Ive gotten pretty good at it. The sunroof on my 242 i rattle canned flat black 3 years ago, still looks fine. It also depends on what spray pain you buy. Cheap spray paint will not look as nice as the 5$ a can rustoleum....i know this from expirance. The 5-6$ a can paint goes on much smother and more evenly. Light coats wait the prescribed amount of time before recoating

This car still looks clean-as-hell, no flaws in the flat black, as far as I could tell, for anyone who didnt believe him. what brand of can did you use? I want the exact same effect on my hood (and eventually the whole car trim line and up)

Thanks J. I used Duplicolor acrilyic enamel from crappy tire. You have to see the interior now, I coated it in rubberized asphault, its quite a bit quieter in the cabin now. We have to have a wrenching session soon man.

Rustoleum satin white. The black at the bottom is flat.

use a low gloss or satin color ..it'll blend in pretty good...then use 0000 steel wool to buff it things smooth. also armorall on the paint kinda gives it a nice luster. there should be a bunch of pictures of my white 244 that was spray bombed with rustoleum satin white on my pbase.com.

No primer, no adhesive promoter, dust wiped with a cloth and gave her.

that makes sense. I got my 242 volvo last year and i had my mind set on repainting it but doing it legit. however, it did cost a pretty penny. to be exact about 1500 which is really cheap considering i prepped most of it. but it looks amazing. I know that if i had done any less work i wouldnt be happy with it....but its alot of work besides the money part of it. Its worth it.. heres what mine looks like

I was thinking about this today, how much weight do you think that stuff would add to the car? 10-15lbs, depending on how much you spray?

If you can go the route I did, it will do a better job. But, my dad has a compressor and we borrowed a shop loaner gun from a paint supplier so it was a gooden. The whole thing cost about $180 CA for paint on the car, plus about ~50 hours of prep.
It's not a perfect paintjob, there are a few runs here and there, but it looks pretty good for the price and the fact it was shot outside.

the biggest thing is to sand back between coats and to ge the sprays even. I rollered my dune buggy. Two undercoats and three back top coats. Looked like ****, but it was a dune buggy so it looked awsome. Id go spray, but rollergives a coats thats overall easier to apply. Spray looks **** if it isnt done properly

tested to see which would look better and i think roller looked better.

i have a mazda 323 and the hood was bent so i thought its the perfect thing to do.

i took the bck side of a sponge and sanded sown the hood then wiped away the dust, then i spraypainted half of it gloss red and clear and buff and wax, it was much quicker to do but i had to mask off the car, then i got red trimclad paint and watered it down with mineral spirits and put 3 coats on, then sanded with 1500grit then 3 more coats and sanded with 1500grit then again 3 more coats and sanded with 2000grit, buffed it with a rubbing compound and a wax. the roller paint looked better and was much stronger. the spray had some lines and scratched easier. i dont know how each will not fade in the sun because i took the hood to the scrap.

that will cost more money than paint. i've been quoted ~$2000 for a good, high quality vinyl wrap.

You can always spray the "roll on" paint. You can get a gallon of Rustoleum for around $30, that's plenty to do a few coats. Buy a used/cheap HVLP spray gun (craigslist FTW) and go to town. No matter what route you choose, the prep work will be the same. The better the prep work, the better the final result.

Here's a write up on how to do it.

ya roller ftw, i think i would have save allot of time if i used 600 between coats instead of 1500 lol.

I rolled mine and wished I would have sprayed it. An acquaintance of mine, bought an '08 WRX drove it home and spray painted it flat black with rattle cans and it looks awesome, much better than a roller for sure.

Gabe244
10-26-2009, 11:02 PM
If it looks worse than spray cans, your doing it wrong. Now way in hell can spray cans match the evenness of rolled paint. It just wont happen. It always ends up patchy. Always.

As for sanding, started with 1200, gave up and went to 600. Much faster. Might get some pics today after my second coat has dried and been sanded.

Pro tip: MAKE THE PAINT THIN! THIN! You really want coloured thinner rather than thinned paint. If you cant do a whole guard without recharging the roller, than its too thick. My bonnet was painted to thickly, so now i have an hours worth of sanding to do on it tomorrow :grrr:.

This was my problem. I thinned it, but just not enough...so parts were super thick and ugly.
