Please read, then look at the picture... :-P Riiiiight.

Marc's excerpt from OVT plus paypal info:
Many of you already know that RSI and some friends are entered in the upcoming Chump Car Race at PIR on Oct. 31. It is a 24 hour endurance race for $500 cars. That's right, a $500 race car. Even though the initial cost is only $500 there are still a lot of other costs involved. That's why we are calling on the Volvo community to help support this event and lead our '86 245 to Chump Car victory.

Sponsorships: We are looking for $3 gas sponsorships. Every $3 buys one gallon of gas. One gallon of gas gets us approximately 5 laps around the track. We anticipate completing over 800 laps.

Donations: Chump Car is dedicated to helping a charity in each community where it races. For Portland, they will be supporting the Community Transitional School. CTS is a private school dedicated entirely to the needs of children aged 5 to 14 whose families are homeless, in transition or otherwise experiencing poverty-related crises. YOU CAN HELP by donating any of the school supplies on this list. http://www.transitionalschool.org/wishlist/wishlist.html Supplies can be dropped off at RSI or the V-Shop. Did we mention that we get "extra" laps for supplies donated? C'mon, let's help a wagon win Chump Car!

Send your sponsorship/donation money here by paypal!: chumpcar@r-sport.org

Crew: We need crew members. You do not need to attend for 24hrs (but you can). Even just a couple hours to help put gas in the car would really help out. We need 3 crew members ready to gas up the car at all times. You even get to wear a driving suit while doing this! Send Jonathan an email to jonathan at r-sport.org if you are interested. Crewing will cost $25 - this is paid to Chump Car, does not go into our pockets. Also, this is the only way to be on the pit side of the track. It is a closed race so no one can be in the pits unless they are an authorized member of the team. Chump Car will be strict on this.

Cheer Team: We will need a cheer team in the stands supporting us! I believe this is free. Come by and cheer your head off! Bring coffee or snacks for the team and we will happily send someone to the other side to gather up the goodies. ;)

Trick or Treat!!!! Between 6p-8p the race will take a 2 hour recess. This is when everyone is allowed into the pits and children will get to go trick or treating at each teams pit area! How fun!

So, can we count on you for a little support?

Crappy cell phone pictures! Still a TON of work to do... A lot.

Sorry this is under Mitch's login

Well its a 1986 Volvo 245 DL

Stock B230F 250k mile bottom end.
Ported Head/we shaved 100 thou of this one
Lumpy RSI cam
Ported Stock cast manifold
Very cheap and dirty mandrel bend 2.5" exhaust

Cobbled Coilovers
800 in/lb front springs
225 in/lb rear springs
IPD front bar
Stock Rear bar

M45 Tranny

We can just hope that the engine holds together.
It's running on E85 and scoots along pretty darn good.

What do we have video of? But yeah, definitely gets around the track ok for what it is. :) Still not like a turbo Miata might, but we'll see how well that fares for 24hrs...

Thanks Karl.

And regarding the shifter, we actually cut the extension off because it was placed a little too far back. We COULD've just re-bent the thing, but this was easier to do and be done with.

We were 3rd ( from 24th ) a lap down to 2nd and half lap behind 3rd at first pit stop and holding steady or inching closer. 2hrs in we got a black flag for passing under yellow and dropped to 11th. 2.5hrs in we are back up to 7th and gaining or at least holding steady with cars in front of us.

We have intermission between 6pm and 8pm and we have worked our way back to 5th.
We are 10 laps behind 1st, but catching them at about 2 seconds per lap.
Hopefully we can make up some time in pitstops and reliability.
We are lapping in the 1:46's and pit stops take 6-10 minutes every 1:45-2 hours.

Doing good overall and lots of people are commenting on how fast the Volvo is.

We had the radiator end tank start leaking so we had to throw a spare radiator in the car during our fuel/driver change at 10:15. That dropped us back 2 laps and to 4th with 5th about a half lap behind us and inching towards us. Mitch is in the car now and doing a good job holding steady. Hopefully we can catch up to the guys in front of us as the race wears on.

Been an exciting last 2.5 hours...

Moved up to a lap behind 3rd and then had a fuel pump failure right near our pit window. Switched out the fuel pump and lost 3 laps to a distant 4th 4 laps down to 3rd.

Kyle got in car during fuel pump switch and started cracking off some blistering laps including this events fastest lap so far by 1.8 seconds!

2nd place car lost a belt ( dropping them to 4th on the same lap as us but running slower ) and we moved up to a strong 3rd.

The current 2nd place car is going through brakes fairly fast and they need to stop for brakes again soon. We are 6 laps down from second but should gain several laps on them while they replace brakes.

1st place is 13 laps ahead and we will have to hope they have an off or mechanical issue to be able to realistically make a run for 1st.

Group A
11-01-2009, 08:14 AM
Battling to stay in 3rd with 4th and we have reeled 2nd in to 2 laps ahead of us. 1st is now 9 laps ahead. Praying we hold together as we are pushing pretty hard.

Race has been temporarily red flagged due to almost zero visibility fog.
There will be a drivers meeting in 2 hours from now to hopefully let the fog lighten up.

Currently we are 1 lap behind 2nd place ( Nissan sentra se-r ) and they are parked in pit lane waiting to start their brake job when we get the green flag again.

That will put us in 2nd place but needing to pit soon. We'll have to see how the pit stops play out but it looks good as long as we don't have any more problems.

1st ( miata ) is still 9 laps ahead and seemingly having no problems.

Mitch went off at the exit of 12 about 30 minutes ago and stuffed it into the tire wall.

Punctured the radiator and bent up some sheet metal. Suspension seems to be ok.

Changed the radiator out (again), did some 5lb sledge bodywork on fender and ripped the broken spoiler/grill/splash tray off in 7:15 and sent him back out.

We lost 4-5 laps which isn't bad considering we had to be towed out of the tires.

We dropped to 4th 3 laps behind 3rd.

Our repair pitstops have become quite the spectacle with a large audience cheering us on each time.

We can now change a main pump in 6 minutes and a radiator under seven.

Everyone loves the Volvo and is cheering us on.

2.5 hours and one pit stop to go.

Still in 4th and we are a little more than 4 laps down.

3rd place (grey #2 rx7) also needs 1 more pit stop and is planning on changing tires.

We are running 1:41-1:45's and they are running 1:44-1:47's.

3rd place is planning a tire change so if their pitstop takes about 7-8 minutes longer than our fuel only stop we are challenging for 3rd with our fastest driver at the wheel.

Optimistic for a podium, but just finishing is quite an achievement.

We still have the third fastest lap.

1.5 hours to go. All pit stops are done but we will be very close on fuel.

Cool video. Rob was going nuts. I drove second session and lapped multiple cars multiple times and I only got passed once in 90 minutes. The Volvo was handling great and power was spectacular.

You guys did a great job.

That Redline oil caused me issues with my rear axle. I had a true track installed with all new pinion, carrier, and rear wheel bearings. Redline was installed at that time. Same stuff 75-90W GL5 gear oil. After a few years the rear axle developed a whine at speeds of about 45mph and above. I went back to the shop that installed it and a tech took a drive with me to hear it. After hearing the whine and what gear oil I used he told me I could either live with it or change to something else. They told me they had a lot of failures with rears using the Redline and don't recommend it anymore. I put in Lucas 85-140W and after about 4 months the whine went away. Lucas even brags on the bottle that it makes whines go away. Give it a try.

9th place including a diff swap - that's awesome!

Man it looks like it was a blast. So jealous of you Portlanders and all of your awesome motorsport opportunities. :)

I agree it sounds like the pinion bearing died and the diff cooked, not the other way around. I'm not convinced it just cooked itself because it needs a diff cooler. :wtf:

I almost wonder if it's a similar issue to BNE's recent diff failure and the crush sleeve is screwing up and its losing preload with repeated harsh on/off throttle cycles.

I'd be tempted to look into a shim kit and/or maybe having some spacers machined to replace the crush sleeve.

RSI could probably even sell "crush sleeve eliminator" kits.

Wasn't the trans. Boiled the rear end oil and stripped all the teeth off the pinion gear.

Yay someone else stripping teeth too!

Thats why i bring spare teeth on my fenders

This was a very fun way to spend the weekend. Thanks RSI and those who made this possible!

Great job out there guys. That swede was one big flat corning beast out there. what a weekend, great racing, good times, and lots of great people. I am definitely still recovering this morning.

The dirty drifters had 2 of 3 cars finish and with all of the mechanicals we went through that was a victory itself. I can't speak for the 40 car ( the cake) or the 87 car (red turbo shadow) but if we hadn't spent so much time in the pits the no 8 black corolla could have been a contender. It was just stupid easy to drive. Inside, outside, put it where you wanted and pedal down. There were only a few cars out there faster in a straight line, fewer that handled any better, and if there was one that was better under braking, I didn't see it. Maybe I was a bit too over confident in the brakes as demonstrated when I performed my version of "Will It Go Round in Circles" in front of you guys and four others going into the Carousel. Sorry about that once again, glad I didn't end up collecting anyone.

You did the Volvo name proud and if you all had anywhere near as much fun as I did then I'm sure we'll see you out there next year. You can bet the Dirty Drifters will be there.

Travis from Shutterdriven.com was there all weekend and got something like 1400 photos. I'll be sure to let you guys know when they make it to the interweb.

I posted this over on OVT but it seems like this is where all the chatter is.

The first pit stop on video here took us 7.5 min.

In that time, we fueled the car, changed drivers, replaced a speedo drive plug on the M45 tranny, added fluid to the tranny. Replaced a bracket for teh power steering pump that had gone missing, topped off coolant, and checked tire pressures.

We had an AMAZING crew. We did radiator swap and fueling in under 5 min. Our minimum allowable pit time was 5 min.

The second pitstop on video here was after the car went into a tire wall. We replaced a radiator, pulled fender back out, cut away bent parts and was racing in 4 min 24 seconds.

having water in that radiator makes the change alot easier when you dont need to worry about coolant all over the place. looks like a lot of fun.
