Very cool. I really enjoyed that. I heard about how revolutionary that plant was, but I never really knew why. Aside from they worked in groups.

Thanks for sharing.

How many of you would pay 20,000 for a brand new 75 242 with a brand new squirter b230ft in it?

its a shame the video doesnt show which guy is responsible for not sealing the seam between spare wheel well and inner fender...i hope they fired him (he must have worked there till at least 1993, the idiot)

This video just goes to show how much human involvement went into the production of these cars.

Paul Grimshaw once brought up on Swedespeed how labor intensive 240 production really was. I don't recall the exact numbers, but it took something like 25-30hrs/car from the beginning of the production line until it was completed. The Japanese were assembling cars in less than 20hrs/car at that time.

Be proud of that beat up ol' 240 your driving...they truly don't make them like that anymore.

Wasn't this a massive failure because the workers skipped out on work all the time?

yup, they were made way less efficient than jap cars. and lifespan of em was too long which isnt very good for the factory (but its good for the brandname)

Cool video. Good to see how that team manufacturing really looked like. Cars built by people are why cars have soul and modern cars don't.

It would be more like $30k for that 242 with a B230FT in it. My 93 wagon was just over $25k and it only had a B230F with DL fittings.

Time article is very interesting as being contemporary.
Now lets compare Kalmar '74 to Torslanda '93

Proof that the '70s was better than the retro '90s version of the '70s.

Those Torslanda vids are great. Granted, most of the camera angles are poor...but the body assembly procedure is simply awesome. I liked how one person could basically move an entire body or rack easily by themselves.

In the Audi personel training that I'm required to take annually, they often show us vids of their modern assembly lines. I saw a clip of the Audi A8 body assembly...it was one guy sitting at a computer surrounded by a room full of robots. At no time did his hands touch a single piece aluminum...the robots did it all. He was just there to make sure the robots functioned properly...and this is a $100k car that we're talking about!

Well the Torslanda factory is a nice comparison, shows how it moved from very labour intensive in the past, to more technology.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qbsx7_vjjKI&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qbsx7_vjjKI&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
For example in the video above, robots are now installing dashes.
Simple fact is as technology improves and becomes cheaper, it's more cost effective and frankly, more quality control, to have robots programmed to do the work.
