View Full Version : December 5th Fontana CA 1/4th track day

We will try this again and maybe more people will actually show up and participate. The incentive this time is I plan to bring a BBQ and a Canopy plus a cooler. So, if you show up, you will get free food, and if you are super cool, you can bring stuff to char or consume with your fellow TB members.
So, December 5th, Fontana. Think where the 15fwy and the 10fwy meet. $20 to run, $10 to watch.

Most volvo's will pass inspection. If you drip some oil, that is ok. Battery tie down strongly suggested and BE SURE to bring your insurance card for the car, Registration, and your License.
I currently plan to get there much earlier than we did last time. I might even leave my house at 5:30 am.
Hope to see you all there, and no more excuses. Even if the car is missfiring, or not creating the best boost, come out at least to support your fellow volvo.

Thinking about bringing a cooler with some grub, some camp chairs...should we try to park together in the paddock area? I see ppl do that a lot.

Thats exactly what is planned. Paddock area reserved in a way for volvo's only, or at least our group. We should not have too much problem with having at least 6 or seven spaces taken up for the volvo cars and a pop up shade a few chairs and a BBQ and cooler.
The trick it seems, is to have one vehicle come really early that is not dragging to camp out a spot in the paddock. If done early enough, we could get a decent spot that wont crowd anyone else out. The parking lot is HUGE and should be easy to create a volvo only spot. Expect to see many of these camps made.
Mike, An arizona trip would be dope as all get out, but the SoCal TB members seem to be unusually broke, not able to take two days off and averse to long drives. Maybe a January trip to AZ? I cannot swing a trip out till after Christmas. Personally, I don't mind a good drive, it's the cost to do so and time.

I wouldn't mind going out to AZ. Just have to schedule it.
As for the drags...I can get there as early as need be. I don't have an EZ-Up, but I have 4 folding camp chairs I can bring. I will also have both of my cars there I think; my buddy will probably be driving my Corrado. So we can try to gank as much room as possible. I also have a cooler and a small hibachi (briquette) grill. Maybe someone has a propane camp stove? That might be better. I'll have my toolbox with me as well (basic stuff). Spread all that crap out and I should be able to claim 4-5 spots I'd imagine.
Should make it a "euro" spot...there may be a few VW guys coming. ;)
I might be able to procure some traffic cones...just cone the spots off and move them for ppl in our group.

No, I know you guys were cool, I just think Justin was kinda distracted cause his woman wasn't feeling good (I think she just didn't want to be there). BTW, she's not coming to this next one.
I just wanted to get it out there that they are coming again and to please save spots for them and me too (I'm a 1/3 Benz, 1/3 Volvo, 1/3 AMC guy). Also found out Justin's BMW buddy is coming too. He has a 88 3 series. Can he hang too? That would make it a true total Euro section.

Oops, need to edit the above as I just bought a 95 E420 tonight for $575 running/driving. I didn't want it, didn't need it, It needs work of course, and I don't have the room for it but I couldn't pass it up at that price.
I have 2 good 300Es that I now must cull from the herd. I'll trade them both for one really nice 93-94 turbo 940 wagon or sedan or I'll sell them outright. http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=184867 I'm bringing one of them on the 5th.

Looks like I am bringing Carne Asada as the beef of choice, corn tortilla's, fresh guacamole, fresh salsa, cheese, limes, and salt. I do not believe they allow alcohol in the paddock, but if you decide to attempt such things, it will be up to you to take care of that issue. I plan to bring Some soda and a cooler. Extra coolers may help, as well as a chair.
BUT, it would help to know how many are coming for sure, even just to watch due to mechanical difficulties. I would rather not spend a ton on food and only have 4 people show up. I would like to keep the overage to a minimum.

As long as you're with someone else who has it, they can use their tow on your car. I ALWAYS carry the Plus service, but I think I'm out of tows. I still get tow service for pretty cheap though, just being a member, even though I'm over my allotted "free" 100-mile tows.

AAA plus is the coverage to get. The basic only covers the first 7 miles, or some low number like that. You can get Premium and then the top level is AAA black, which if it has not changed, has a 500 mile tow, or something crazy.

AHh, more shens. I get to swap in a better getrag and hope it was not abused, or ran with no fluids like mine did. No one repairs the buggers, and the few who do, charge arms and legs, plus left nuts, right eye, and a butt cheek. Parts hard to get, expensive, and need special tools to remove. I may have to load up on a few getrags and not put one in my 242.
Got my 50 trim turbo from an ebay buy. Used China T3/T4 54 trim. Actually decent quality, but the interesting parts is the compressor wheel looks a lot like a real Garrett wheel except it looks and feels heavier. You have to see them side by side to tell the difference. I have not decided how I will handle this turbo. I have another turbo I can rebuild as well.

I was not too inclined to take my kids and my wife does not like car events. She would rather cut her wrist than sit around while I talk to other guys about cars. My kids have some interest, but it may be too many hours for them and trying to BBQ, race, and watch kids is probably not a good thing.

I appreciate it but that's OK. I won't bring them if no other families are coming. I just didn't want to not bring them if there were going to be other families there. Then all the wives could sit around and ridicule and talk trash about their husbands to each other because of all the time and money that we waste on these "old worthless cars" That's big fun for them! (All my wife cares about is the car having working air conditioning!) It's also good because then the wives learn that their own husbands are not unique in their illness.

I know it's a bit of a schlep from Fontana (65 miles or so), but I was thinking of staying at a Motel 6 near Van Nuys on Saturday night after the drags and then heading to the dyno day on Sunday morning, then coming home. It would be a long weekend, but it would be nice to get baseline ET's and baseline dynos on the same weekend.
If there's room for a few more cars, would anyone else be interested? It's $65 for 3 pulls with A/F plots.

Where are you coming from? Their are gas stations that have 100 octane that are fairlu close, but depending on your route, could be a significant detour. I plan to run only 91 this time.

There is one in SD off El Cajon Blvd and the 15. I am doing my research on what its going to take to go E85. A couple of weeks ago it was cheaper than gas at $2.75/gal. Im paying about $3.00/gal right now on 91 octane.
I am not going to make it guys. I am spending this weekend working on the house and getting parts shipped out. I still didnt buy tow coverage and my clutch wasnt holding at the 1/8th mile track what makes me think its going to start holding a couple weeks later.

All you really need for E85 is an AFR gauge, and possibly an adjustable FPR and/or larger injectors. I'm gonna run E85 in my Corrado I decided. Just need to save a few paychecks for the parts.

Ballpark is $3 per person. Much cheaper and better food than the stands, and only little more than burgers or hot dogs on the grill :)

Dave, you've given me a renewed hope for my Brick! Also worth noting folks is that today a 7xx spanked all the 2xxs! :-P:-P:nod:
P.J.'s Carne Asada was like butter! Melts in the mouth!
I've been wondering for five years now what my 89 300E runs. Now I wish I didn't know. 16.969 @ 82.49. with the trunk full of all that stuff that you guys saw me remove. For some strange reason the car got slower once all the stuff was removed. (No I wasn't having any traction issues.) My 88's ECU didn't really do much for me, about a half a mile per hour gain which may have been more due to the cooler air than anything. I came prepared to cut my exhaust off if necessary to spank the same era 325 BMW that was coming but since he didn't show, I didn't cut.
I'm glad we got a good turn out today and thanks to being able to visit with you guys in person, I feel like I have a game plan for my brick now. I'm gonna start a thread and Mike please weigh in cause it's looking like your chips will be a part of the mix.
Somebody put a bunch of nice wrenches together with my stuff but before I could find out who they belong to they were gone again. Did they make it back to their proper home?
I still ended up with a bungee cord that doesn't belong to me. It's one of those black ones.
Aaron, I wasn't B.S.ing you. I really do have Jewish blood from my mother's side and Texas blood from father's side. It made for some interesting family dynamics. While my father is a man of the world, his parents were not. So that is the mental picture I had. Please don't misinterpret what I said. I meant no harm or offense.
It was cool finally meeting the rest of you as up until now Westminster Dave and Josh were the only ones I had meet before.

I think it was a combination of things. It was not feeling anywhere near as fast as that night. Current guesses until confirmation is poor shifting ability, not as much boost, hot air intake temps. Today I ran the car in 5th and 14psi was the best I got out of it. And thats with the air box removed and no air filter. And my blow off valve sounds funny now. It sounds like the BOV is not opening. Tiger hasn't even had his "D" game lately.:rofl::rofl:
Question: Could the fact that S.D. county is about a thousand feet lower in altitude also be a contributing factor in the car running better down there than it does up here? I know it's a reach but maybe worth considering? I know boosted cars are less susceptible to altitude but maybe it would help to tune the car at the altitude it lives at? I know I'm reaching here.

boost leak is very possible and most likely. On the one pass I did with MS on the laptop, I was not able to get a datalog due to getting up to race faster than I thought I would. I should have turned the datalog on well into the lining up area. What I did notice was at the staging and sitting at the light, MS was reading 119 degrees air intake temps with an outside air temp of about 60 degree's. The temps went down to 82 degrees at the end of the track. I did not watch my boost much while going down the track. I was watching more of the RPM's. I kinda wish I had datalogs since that would help in some of the diagnosis. Oh well, some other time. Time to whip out the test equipment. Last night I did 6k rpm in 4th gear and it pulled to there pretty well. Fun stuff. Speed is a journey.

Yeah, it takes some actual track time to get a good setup dialed. I thikg we should hit up the 1/8 mile action and get it to do some nice clean track pulls in an environment where you can actually trouble shoot.
The altitude has never made a drastic difference in any of my cars, there is something that changed.

Aaron,
Once you get that clutch and lighter flywheel in, you should be solidly into the 15's. I'm not sure what boost pressure you're running, but it seems to me your setup should be trapping high 80's.
Your results are gonna be much different on our next trip.
If I keep the Corrado, I have some plans for it that might make it a contender in the "decent ET" department...thinking about ditching the blower for a turbo, and swapping the 02A 5-spd for an 02M 6-spd w/ LSD.

Sean,
Bad news, Rimco said it would take over 4 hours to lighten down to even 23 or 24 pounds. So I told them not to bother cause it was going to be to costly so im running it as is. Its beens surfaced and balanced. When i get more money and I want to hit low 15's I'll get RSI's version. For now, it should be fine as long as I wear it in properly and not go on boost.
Your Corrado is pretty damn fast as it is. Wouldnt mind seeing what it can do with a turbo on it. Let me whats happening with it, i'll come by and hand you tools:lol:

Wish I coulda been there. You guys need to come to racelegal in sd. I did 44 passes in one night last month.
I'm with Josh, I'm not racing 1/4 till my car is dialed in on the 1/8th. There is also Barona which I hear is faster. It's a drag strip and not a parking lot.

You just need pants, helmet, $30, and to pass tech. You can race with passengers if you go slower than 8.5.
Track limit is 6.0 or 115mph tho guys so don't turn the boost on your .50 trim too high.

ANother 1/8th track. And more $$ to run than Irwindale, but not much. At least you have two choices in San Diego, and Qualcomm, can easily do 15 runs in one night. I have a boost leak, or something worse. It now takes some serious rpms to get to 10 psi. I upped my boost controller, and got one pull to 19 psi, and then it stopped boosting basically. Real slow to boost. Fun.

That's a good way to take the turbo out, please check for leaks.

It is true that Barona's also only an 1/8 mile right? I've already addressed 1/8 mile tracks. :grrr:
I always look at the time spent between runs not as "waiting" but as time to let the car get nice and cool so I can get a faster E/T!:-D

Some of my best runs have been when doing hotlaps. IE. finish the race and then start another race immediately after.

Sometimes there is something to that. The ECU seems to go into a "Let's Party" mode, but that only works if the weather's not too warm, the cooler the better. I haven't seen a car yet (especially a boosted one) that gets faster when it's engine is on the warm side.

I only know of this guy but I think he has given up on the place as he hasn't been there since August. http://poolemanphotography.smugmug.com/Drag-Racing-Cars-and-Bikes
He took these of me the day I ran my mid-14s. http://poolemanphotography.smugmug.com/gallery/8390635_oqG3G#550689607_HH2Jz
There was also this guy there taking videos all the time but he seems to have stopped as well. He took this of me running a 14.551 just before I ran my 14.476. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOpeNXP0sMw&feature=channel
I know there are other guys there doing vids and pictures, I just don't know who they are.
Regards, Eric
Well it turns out the YouTube video taker was there after all. It just took him extra long to post the videos this time. I didn't see anything of any interest to us though. http://www.youtube.com./profile?user=zeuceone#g/u (This is a different dude than the one that made the video that Dave posted above.)
