I have shamelessly copied this out of an older 410-thread because i think this makes a nice useable sticky. The linked pages provides even more useable axel/diff info.

This table came in very handy when I was searching. Also try the wanted forum on here.

Another handy tidbit that was on that page:

How to Measure Axle Ratio on the Car. [Rob Bareiss] Here's how I compute axle ratio: Make sure the car's in neutral, and can't roll. Block the wheels and release the parking brake. Raise one rear wheel. Make sure you have an open differential- not limited slip. If you can spin just one rear wheel, it's a regular differential. Make a mark on the driveshaft or pinion shaft of the differential- doesn't matter where, just so you can see it clearly. Use "white-out" or something. Make note of the position of the valve stem or mark the tire too. Turn the tire 20 turns (10 for a limited slip and you need both tires off the ground). Count the revolutions of the driveshaft. When you finish, note the approximate position of the shaft relative to the starting position- only approximate. You should get something like 37 1/3 turns of the shaft, or 41. Divide by 10 to get the actual gear ratio. 41= 4.10, 37.3 = 3.73, etc.

You say you want the 4.10 gears, and I want the 3.73 gears. I need better highway fuel economy.

That was more my concern. I want 4.11 rear gears!

But I could've sworn there was a difference in pinion or axle diameter from 1030 to 1031...?

Crownpinion%201030%201031.jpg

Left, 1030, Right, 1031.

So wait now- "The Volvo 1031 - (Dana 30) heavier duty, introduced to all 4-6 cyl models from 1981 onwards."

Our gears would swap!

I thought the 30/31 was like another turbo/NA deal. Cool.

I lifted this from another thread, it might be usefull here:

today i checked the ratio of the gears in my new axel that i bought. sadly there was no ID-sticker on the axeltube.
If you undo the cover and rotate the crown(ring) gear you can find and read the ratio that's stamped on the side of the crowngear like this: 10/41 meaning it has a pignon with 10 teeth and a crowngear with 41 teeth >> 4,10:1 ratio. No need to count teeth or rotations.

I just found the goldmine of cross references.
I also posted it in a 240 thread. I think this should be in this article.

Another table to look at:

The following rear differential information was supplied by Scott of HWY 79 Auto Sales & Salvage, Inc. (email: hwy79ky[at]alltel.net, web site: www.hwy79auto.com ). Many thanks.

The first number is the ADP Hollander salvage interchange number. If the front number is the same (minus alphabetic suffix), they will interchange, and have been grouped accordingly. This number can be used to order the axles from more than 3000 salvage yards across North America.
