Beautiful engine detailing. My only question is how can your run acorn nuts on your exhaust manifold? Doesn't stud-stretch eat up all you the play you have in there?

What acorn nuts? You trippin?

You should also ditch that 940 oil/water cooler. It'll make filter changes a bitch because the downpipe will have trouble clearing

Looking good. The only thing I noticed is that the drain hose looks like it could be shortened a bit. There is a low/flat spot in it now.
FRAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMM!! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!
Looks good, i would have done a few things differently... but regardless you did a fantastic job.

well first off the oil filter is for break in and the water/cooled oil filter set up is temporary. I also plan on going with a turbo header sometime in the future and blubrik i will be at ikea!

My thoughts exactly! I literally started laughing out loud when I saw/read this! Yeah, clean engine, but really??.... This is project engine swap, not project runway.:-P I think half of the pics should be here and the other half on your myspace page.:-P:-P Clean engine though!

Is it just me or does it look like the oil cooler lines hook up to the engine coolant lines? Or is that a different kind of oil cooler than I'm used to?
Love the attention to detail, very very clean!

On the later turbo cars they went away from the air-cooled oil cooler element and instead use a water-cooled heat exchanger.
Use a portion of a stock drain line to get the flexible hose away from the turbo, then run the good silicone high temp hose. Inspect it closely at every oil change and carry spare hose just in case.

Is that the early exhaust manifold (pre 90)?
yeah noob, it is. 240 T3, judging by the turbine housing clamp with integrated spot for the support bracket at the top of the manifold (I think dave lotman is the only one still using that style, if anyone is)

I'll add something more constructive:
- Fender covers are always nice when doing something this major
- Did you stick with LH 2.2 ?
- Recharging with R134a?
- What era engine block is that?
And it would have been nice to go 90+ exhaust manifold and an oil pressure sender would still be nice to add on.
Sir Psycho
03-12-2010, 01:08 AM
Just make sure you have pressure on the oil return line and it's not too flexible. It is pressed into the block with pressure to keep from leaking oil. If there's not enough pressure oil will leak and muck up your new pretty motor. At least seal it with some RTV high temp oil resistant sealer.
Other than that it looks great, congratulations on getting it done!

good work!!! although, i have to say, i opened this thread and was like "whaa what is that 12 year old doing in the engine bay???" you look really young. but you are doing a helluva lot more than i was at 17 so mad props for that.
clean engine, i love it, keep it up!!

i am painting the car so no fender covers. i am running lh 2.2 from 740 turbo. and yes 134a and 93 b230ft with upgraded t3 55 trim upgrade. and i am going to try to find a 90+ and port it and i have a oil pressure sender just not going just yet.
(I think dave lotman is the only one still using that style, if anyone is)

I love how this thread made it to page 2 so i dont have to scroll through the pics again. But really, thats a nicer hunk of metal than many on here will ever put together. Is this going to be a daily driver, autocrosser, or just a weekend lady killer?
timpanama

daily driver and autocrosser
timpanama
03-12-2010, 08:03 PM
Thanks you all for the support!!
Diggin the look. Ignore the hate.
But PLEASE change that return line. My return line on my car looked exactly like that.(With heater hose too) It wasn't kinked when we put it in, but after a week the heat got too much for it so it became more flexible. (Did not melt) It kinked up hard core and I started blowing smoke. Let's put it this way, that turbo died... :-( -400 for turbo... - 400 for another turbo. Me = fail. Please learn from me, seriously.
Other than that looks sick as hell and I wish mine looked half as nice!!

AWSOME job on the engine! I can only ever hope to be capable of doing that to my spare engine some day

Great work here man, I am impressed. Like everyone else I will point out things that have probably already been pointed out.
Ported 90+ manifold would be nice (I know you said you are going to get one)
Drain line even in silicone is not going to work. Trust me, I tried it. Just because it costs $20 a foot doesn't make it work. I have 2 options, I have found it worth it to use a braided line. If you can't do that I would consider boat exhaust tubing. I put that on one car and never had a problem with it.
I don't know your power goals but I am going to throw it out there anyway. Megasquirt fuel and spark management.
As I said earlyer, it looks great! Keep it up!

Just in general that stuff gets really soft with just hot air/oil going through it from the block to my catch can on the intake side of the engine.

For the drain line, napa sells some hose that's made for oil/high heat applications. Eaton also makes some aeroquip hose that is also suitable for a oil drain line, but it's considerably more expensive than the napa stuff. I've been using the napa stuff for my drain line since I swapped the 90+ like 5 years ago, granted it's only got about 5-7k miles on it. It still feels pretty much like it did the day I put it on, not soft or brittle. Not sure what it's called or labelled, but it's a reddish orange color.
Oh and your project is off the heezy. Great job. Take the time to get the details right upfront though.

Looking good man! No more Gray/blue valve cover?
Is your piping done between turbo and IC? My holset is about 130* from yours, the outlet is on the lower left. If running internal gate I hope you did something with the wg ports!
If you want to remove that fugly solenoid on the coldside, I sell some plug for them.

The best drain line hose I ever bought came from a hydraulic repair shop. It's impervious to all automotive chemicals, rated to survive absurdly high temps/pressures and reinforced with a steel mesh lining. A couple feet of it wasn't that expensive.
