Hello Group. It has taken me a few weeeks, But I finally decided to join up to your site.
I have been a long time wagon fan, and usually own 60's american wagons. but when it got to the point of not wanting to drive them in winter anymore (salty midwest), and getting jobs farter and farther away....It was time to get something newer. A white on tan 240 wagon rolled into the body shop I worked at and I fell in love. The hunt began, and about 16 months ago, I bought a 1990 740 turbo wagon. It was champagne on tan, 150K, Hydra rims, some damage to the right quarter panel......but otherwise nice enough for winter.
I redid all brakes, put on two new tires, and had to replace the turbo intake hose and rebuild the wastegate. But otherwise, it has been great. It now has 170 K.
Well, I am a painter by trade, and the look of a 'modern' car just wasnt fitting me very well. I was having a hard time being in a 'normal' wagon, so I decided to either sell it, or make it something I liked to drive. I chose the latter. Here is a before and after of the rear:
Front Before:
http://www.fordfalcons.com/other/IMAGES/volvo_90_1.jpg
Front After:
http://www.fordfalcons.com/other/IMAGES/volvo_740turbo_FL_profile.jpg
And the rear:
Rear before:
http://www.fordfalcons.com/other/IMAGES/volvo_90_2.jpg
Rear After:
http://www.fordfalcons.com/other/IMAGES/volvo_740turbo_LR_profile.jpg
Among many things, removed the shabby side mouldings and back emblems, Filled all side moulding holes with 'rivet' plugs. Painted the whole car DP90 flat black. (WHOLE car..handles etc). Tinted rear window and eyebrow 5%, all side windows 20%. Hydra's were kinda shabby, so I bolted 16" moon discs over them. Lowered car 2"-3" (front rode much higher at first). Thats the basics of it, I wont bore you with all the little details. Blue dot taillights is next, and then I may fix that damaged quarter panel and re-black the whole car.
Hope I didnt babble too long. I originally came here lookin for info on turning up the boost, but have decided to leave well enough alone and just enjoy the forums. The car is really slow from 0-15 MPH, and then kicks in. I figure that cant be right, But dont want to mess with it really! Hope you enjoy it, and Ill keep an eye on this place . I havent been through the site yet, so who knows what ill find!

all i can say is: FLAMES!!!!!!!
SaltFlatBlack

Cant wait to meet mr blown240 and see what the fuss is all about! Flames were an original part of the project, but as said..the right quarterpanel is damaged. When I get a chance to fix it, I will re-blacken the whole car and THEN approach the flames. However, I am liking the total blackout of the car, so my idea is to hand stripe black flame outlines on it instead of the traditional red/yellow or ghost. Not the sticker kind, I mean hand laid brushed black gloss flame outlines on the satin paint job. I think that would be smooth and subtle.
I also was/am considering ghosting a POW/MIA flag logo on the roof or hood. As cool as I think it would be, It would kill the blackout effect, so I am up in the air on that one.
I need headlight blackouts, but have only seen one pair ever for nearly $200. No thanks. I actually want to sand them down with maybe some 1000 grit wet paper to give them a satin-y look, instead of shiny . Right now the plate blackout is shiny, and I dont care for it. I intend to flatten that out in time as well.

It looks nice.
You should look into the black magic lights by Hella.
They make the light look black by putting a dark ring of plastic in the light, and the reflector turns black until the lights are turned on.
Maybe you could modify your lights internally.
Also, if you tint the outside of a light, it colors the light going in and coming out, so the light looks much darker when off than the actual tint effect when lit from within.

Hea I'm into that look too. Check out my talon. Not sure if my future volvo is going to be like this. I was thinking a very very light pink with shiny black wheels. What do you think of this paint. Did this myself. Not bad I think for my first paint job.

Eeeexcellent {Mr.Burns style}.
I've seen alot of old rods here in DP90. Great choice.
I was also pondering the satin or flat black roof, since the roof is faded and the clear coat is messed up.

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but what about tinting the tail lights? I will soon be redding out my 90 740 sedan taillights with the testors candy apple red model paint. Then once all that sanding and crap is done I will paint over them to get a light tint effect. I figure that's look cool on my black sedan and would look awesome on a flat black wagon (maybe think of a way to get them looking like they have a satin finish too)

1: Not sure how to tint tailllights and not make them look tacky. As you can see, I did blackout the rainlight portion of my taillights. THe before/after shows this well..and makes the taillights much smaller in appearance. Any ideas welcomed.
2:Moons over hydras........Well, The hydras were pretty curbrashed, and it seemed an easy fix. I didnt want red at all, and buying 4 steeleis and tires added alot to the car. Thats the one point i have to make very clear is that this isnt my project car. I have 3 vintage cars I am restoring, and this is my daily driver. So bagging it, flame throwers, 4 new steelies etc is just too much money taken away from my other cars. (see them at www.fordfalcons.com/mycars ) I mean, I literally have about $300 total into the dressing up of this car so far. That means everything from the paint job to the moonies. But joe schmoe couldnt get his car blackout out for $300. Im lucky to do this for a living.
3:Yep, The 'paint' is actually epoxy primer sealer. Usually used between snaded paint/primer and the color application. Not designed to be the finished progduct, but it was easier and quicker than trying to paint it a flattened single stage or use a flattening clear. It does chalk up a bit in time, but it is so cheap and relatively thin that you can just scuff the car down and redo it in half a day when the time comes....or at least I can:)
4: Shaving door handles.......again the time/cost matter. It needs to be functional year round above all. I dont need frozen door popper on those cold snowy indy winter mornings. Not to mention the cost of the actuators and such. This is also my wifes 'backup car' in case her daily driver (Saab 900 drop top) is getting oil changed or something. She drives this with the family, and I take one of the classics out. So practicality is key also.
5:The reverend Horton Heat rocks, and I just saw him again about 3 weeks ago or so. Always great. I took my sticker off 3 days ago as it was also quite shabby...and too bright. Im going to get a black one next. I play bass, but have no room for an upright in my house/life right now......maybe one day.
6: Big lady 112, I will check out your talon tonight....im late for work!
Thanks for all the kind words! Blown240, thats pretty cool! The headlights made the difference from the old front end in beige to this. Very very cool. Every time you think you are alone in the world, The internet proves you wrong! I feel like I found a family. Admittedly, I will not be the most active member, as I frequent forums or digests in Champ Car Racing, Station Wagons, Saab 900's, Ford Falcons, and now this! So I cant post daily....but think I am going to enjoy my stay for sure! I do indeed need to get some more snot out of my car, but im in no rush. I know where to come when Im ready though!

Big lady, your talon looks great! I dont even like Talons or Eclipses, but that really looks sharp.
To answer the question on texture etc......Flat black is a very frinedly finish, granted you dont streak it. DP90 is very streak friendly and easy to apply, but can be done poorly. I used House Of Kolors black sealer once called KS10 I think.....It looked nice, but was hard to not have it streak. I prefer the PPG DP90. As you are spraying it, you may be thinking WHAT DID I DO!? But once it dries, it hides ALOT. Very nice stuff. But it may make you overconfident that painting is easy. This is the user friendly step...the rest is difficult.
Lovin this so far! Good fun. I forgot to mention I have blue dots ready to put in too but havent taken the time. I want to do it right, so Id rather wait.

Thanks, Speedw240. I agree. I know that I couldnt have afforded to have it painted if not in the business, and I would never rattle-can it, so I am very fortunate. Its nice to be able to transform cars that are solid but shabby into respectable cars again.

I did a handle shave and completely seamed the rear door making the rear glass one single piece instead of 3. More of an "Express" look panel van type thing. It might look better if the rear window was instead metal but I'm not gonna spend that much time photoshopping things =D Anyway let me know what you think.

Wow....that looks REALLY good. You did a GREAT job and it reaaaaly makes me want to do it.....but As mentioned above, It doesnt fit the purpose of the car right now. I do need to do some more stuff to it, BUt in time. My 66 falcon and 66 mercury are both aching for attention, and both could also use the flat black-out! Thanks for the rendering! Ill save it and post it on my site and repost the link here.

OT.
Being that they're an Australian band, I used to go and see them before they got really big.
There's a place in Richmond (suburb of Melbourne) called the 'Corner Hotel' and I've seen many up and coming bands there since probably '95 or '96.
The song 'Prisoner of Society' made them a success to the masses here, but I remember seeing them in late late '96 at one of the best gigs I've ever seen - it was about $8, approx 35 people were there, they were accessible to the crowd and once they'd played their planned set, the did requests from the crowd - some beatles stuff and some general '80s type music too. very talented and very nice people.
Of course, that was a long time ago, I havent seen them for about 2 years so. I saw Chris Cheney (sp?) at another gig (going to watch, not playing) about 18 months ago though.

Thanks, Greentea. I wasnt too keen on the 740 series at first, which is why I first bought an 86 240 wagon. But the owner couldnt find the title, so I had to buy a different one. The 740 is what I found, but after re-doing it, I kinda fell for the smoother, lower, sleeker styling over the 740 series. Thanks for the compliment......
