OK, so pretty much since I got rid of my '78 GT (8 years ago) I've wanted a '79. Big sway bars, upper and lower braces, updated body, 5-panel taillights, and no buttcheeks. My evil master plan was to make this my hotrod, as my wife got an '11 Odyssey to replace my V70R. So, to that end, I had planned an obsessive weight loss plan, a 16V N/A stroker motor, and whatever bolt-on chassis upgrades I could afford/justify.

Coincidentally, CarLustBlog (www.carlustblog.com) issued a $1500 Challenge (http://www.carlustblog.com/2010/12/car-lust-1500-used-car-challenge.html), at about the same time I started seriously shopping for a car. Thus, my budget was set. I had been in contact with a young man who had casually listed a non-runner on t'bricks, but after the holidays he stopped responding to my emails. Then, I found this cubic-zirconium-in-the-rough on Portland CL.

Yeah, it's been through some love, some abuse, and some neglect. But it runs well enough to pass DEQ. It probably handled pretty good before the PO's wife tagged a curb, bent a rim, and tweaked the steering. It tracks OK but the camber and toe are definitely goofed up. Those alloys are 15X7 Rial basket weaves, with RUF center caps. Unfortunately the kid at Les Schwab didn't give the PO the busted wheel back.

Since driving it up to Seattle, I've cleaned out the crankcase vent, removed the A/C compressor and condenser, replaced a couple of vacuum lines, pulled off the drip rail trim, and swapped in a set of Dracos. More pics to come as things progress.

Like I said, the dude at the tire shop didn't give it back to the PO. And that annoys me, because Seattle Wheel Service is right down the street from me, and they did a beautiful job when my wife tagged a pothole in my first R and bent one of the Comets. Suffice it to say I'm checking eBay for that wheel on a regular basis.

nice find....... GL with the 1.5k challenge.
If you need anything for it we've got a 78 and 79 GT 242 in the JY here.
They will not last long as they get crushed on a regular basis.

Anthony.

I seen this car in person before it was wrecked. Then months latter it stopped by at Volvo's only I recognize it right away.

Yeah, the wheels are pretty distinctive. And most of us don't see a GT every day.

What, with those gaudy orange stripes and those pitiful tiny wheels? If I wanted a perfect representation of a GT, I would have bought one of those barn finds that came up in the last few months. Or I would have entertained my other folly and made a perfect '79 245GT, complete with custom interior, full GT spec suspension, and a blueprinted B23E.

I was planning on doing a thorough restification, but I got another idea when I was scouring CL for Penta engine parts. So for now, I'm just going to get everything cleaned up and sorted out, and then I'll reveal my new evil plan.

That's what makes a GT a GT if you wanted to build a car, find a dl. GTs are worth a lot more when they are GT's. Your car, you do what you want. Just my 2 cents.

Hate to ask a stupid question but except for the GT badge on the trunk lid this car looks more like a factory DL. What makes this 242 a GT? All of the GT interior pieces are missing including seats.

If you don't let people in on what you're trying to build, then people can't help you find parts to make your non-looking GT look remotely like a GT again. On a side note I had an '80 GT(avatar) with dual webers and still have a '79 GT that I'm about to sell. Fun cars for sure!

my only guesses are somebody replaced the seats, and painted the red stuff in the interior, or volvo made some GT's without the foglight grille, other style gauge cluster, stripes and interior package?:e-shrug: i really like the wheels, its a shame you dont have the complete set.

Yeah, some tool replaced all the seats. The door cards look like they just peeled the orange strip off, and the dash stripe was swapped out for regular black pieces. The fog light wiring is still there, but the lights and brackets are long gone. It's definitely a GT though, there's no buttcheeks. As for the "GT" or "Rally" or "R-sport" gauges as they are variously called, those were just an accessory. The GT package only added the tach to the standard gauge cluster.

nice, i didnt know about the gauge cluster, i just thought they all had the R-sport one. cant wait to see some more progress on the car. i almost bought a GT awhile back, but it was so far gone, and the price wasnt right. then it ended up gettin stripped out and crushed.
