View Full Version : 740/940 cross-member

we know that 7/9 cross-member has quite flex to it, and I saw at least 5 cracked ones, in the same place, and as I found out it's quite common, especially when D24T pressing down:nod:
I know about 960 parts added to 940 cross member, but what I want to know has anyone straightened it with some plates, welds...
So pics are a must:oogle:

Ohhh really, that's good to know...but I saw some 940 with cracked cross members...
How are the redesigned ones considering the flex?

Interesting about the 940 ones, we never got D24s after 86 I think it was and I could count the number of 700 series diesels i've seen on 1 hand. I've never heard of the later ones cracking though

where do they normally crack at? I've never noticed or really checked honestly

My 85s cross memer was cracked, both sides, where the front control arm's inner mount bolts through...roughly around there. Swapped with one from the junkyard.

There are threads with pics in here. Mine (86 740 Diesel with a SBC) cracked on each side where the cross member curves in front of the control arm mount. I cut some steel laying around, welded it in the curve and welded the cracks up. Has worked fine so far. Check it every other month or so when I'm under the car.
