Post some pics of how you have your Hella or Lucas permanantly mounted Map Light attached/mounted to your Volvo 240's interior.

I want to get some ideas of where to mount one.

Hella(or Lucas) MAP LIGHT. Like this 18" long gooseneck map light. Might also be called a "interior rally light".

Thanks Tom Wiley. Don't know if that "holding clip" came with the light, or is a Hella/Lucas accesory, or homemade do you?

Thanks, Tom. Guess I'll have to fab someting similar. Gotta get the map light 1st though. That might be the better place to mount it. I haven't thought of that location . Thanks for the pic & idea .

Plugs into the cigarette lighter.

Not bad, not bad at all. I have several similar to those, but I smoke, and like to have access to my cig lighter, and swapping it back & forth gets to be a hassle for me.

Thought I'd try a permanently mounted one , while freeing up my lighter, and gain more manueverabiltiy with the light itself for other situations that arise from time to time.

But I cannot quit decide what mounting location would be the most versatile. More thinking is required I suppose. I need the light to determine it's true "reach" lso.

It should be here this week. I snagged a 18" hella on ebay for a somewhat decent price. I hope I didn't outbid another TBers though.Might have, not sure.

No problem. It's out of the way and accessible. If it were my car, I'd put it there as well.

I'll be able to tell more about the reach of my light when it arrives.. I am wondering if I could use the existing grab handle holes in the roof, to mount it similar to your pic. Will depend on the map light's mounting bracket, I believe. I'll see.

On a serious note, on the rally cars we usually stick them low down under the dash on the passenger side. You don't want the bulb getting in the direct line of sight of the driver; it screws up their night vision.

I had originally thought about mounting it somewhere low under the dash,on driver's side, but not a lot of places to mount it to anything that is solid/metal, on/in a 91 240 sedan, due to the knee bolster that is usually in my way. (I'm a tad over 6 foot tall).

I agree that is shouldn't be mounted in such a way as to blind the driver or interfere with his visio in any way.

I also have to consider mounting it in such a way, that passengers do not bump it,fiddle with it &/ or break it when they get in & out of the pass side.

After looking around inside the car, I selected to mount the Hella Map Light on the rear passenger's ashtray that's on the back end of the E Brake Console.

I'm going to run the wiring through the ashtray, through the ashtray's backing plate in the E Brake Console, then grounding the ground wire to the e brake's mounting plate, most likely.

Then run the + wire through the console, under carpet by shifter, up the Center Console and over to the fusebox.

And also, make a quick disconnect right at the ashtray, so it can be removed quickly, to reinstall another useable ashtray when passenger smokers are in the back seat & a useable ashtray is needed.

This way, the light will stand upright between the front seats when not in use and be out of the way,& the driver and front seat passenger as well as the rear seat passengers, will be able to use the map light, and it will be removeable if needed.

For my use, I think this will be best,as long as the E Brake Console & ashtray will support the map light OK. I think it will if one is gentle with the map light. I'll have to see how it works out.

I happened to have a very clean, nice spare ashtray. I've drilled the holes in the spare ashtray itself, for the wires & mounting screws .

I'm going to fab a metal bracket with two mounting holes to span past the width of the light's mounting holes, inside the ashtray, and use small machine screws & nuts to mount the light's base. Should be plenty strong .

I'll post pics of it when I complete the install.

Well , I had to cut the "O" ground connecter off the ground wire as it grounded with the lamp base screw. Since I'm going to ground it to the E Brake's metal base, I cut the O off & I soldered a piece of wire on in it's place.

Then drilled the "3rd wire hole" 2 sizes larger because I double heatshrinked both wires, and drilled the backing plate in a 3 hole slot.

I painted the brace bracket that braces the inside of the ashtray that I made with Rustoleum Gloss Black last night, & it was dry today.

I think I'll paint the lock washers & nuts too. Now that they they are installed & tightened, I should be able to brush on some gloss black paint on them, with a model car paint brush, for a totally hidden appearance.

I used two #8-32 x 1 inch allen head machine screws from the outside, to mount the Hella Map Light to the ashtray, then fished the brace bracket I made, to go inside the ashtray, on both screws.

I used a hemostat to fish the lock washers & get the nuts started. Then of course tightened them.

This last install step was quite frustrating for a far sighted guy to do while holding a small shirt pocket MagLite in his mouth to see inside the ashtray. in a not so well lit kitchen at night Was not too hard though. Got them tight.

I'll have to complete the wiring tomorrow(I hope),. But I did snap the ashtray back in, to see if the E Brake Console & ashtray release was strong enough to not break/crack /come loose with the Hella Map Light in the "out of the way upright position" between the two front seat backs & in the "in use" position.

Works like a charm. I believe this is the best place to mount it I could have picked. The driver can use it, the front passenger can use it, and even the rear seat passengers can use it. How much more convenient a Map Light could you ask for?

This particular type of Hella Map Light new aren't all that cheap. IIRCC around 60 bux new.

I bought this one used a while back. The way I have it mounted, & the way I'll wire it with a 2 wire, male/female plug type connection, it'll be easily removable.

sure ya can, it'll only take 15 seconds to swap the OEM ashtray back in. Should've read the post LOL. It'll have a quick disconnect plug for the map light. You'll see in a few days.

Why not put it in the headliner right past the rearview mirror? pointing down, so you can actually read a map while sitting.

Didn't want to screw up the sedan headliner. Plus I din't want anything obstructing my vision/the windshield and the plastic covers in the location you suggest would not hold the weight of the map light IMO.

The Hella map Light's stem is very flexible/bendable. It is also 18" long.

I sat in the seat & I can adjust/bend the map light & I test read a map.

So it works just fine mounted this way, & is out of the way when not in use, don't interfere with Ctr Console switches, glove box and is quickly removable/replaceable with an ashtray, if I have smokers in the back as passengers.

What's not to like ?

I finished making up the easy disconnect connection today.

I robbed a disconnectable wiring plug from under the e brake console of a parts car. I had to remove one wire in center, and cut one of the two leads and heat shrink the cut one to the one I left on there.

I also enlarged the hole in ashtray's backing plate to work with the plug.

I then used red & black heatshrink to "color" the wires as ,red=+ black = - ,plus the plug is "idiot proof" as it'll only plug together one way.

I really like this type of disconnecable plug, as it's easy to plug together as well as unplug, and it has "locks" on it too. Being free mades it nice too.

Now unplugging & removing the mp light will be quick & easy when the time comes. Now I just need to run positive wire to fuse box, and run a ground for it.

BigScreen Bob has done a beautiful job restoring & customizing that 245! Truly a great looking car!

For my purposes, I think where I've monted my Hella Map Light will work out well for me.

I tried holding it up on the center post between the doors, but it would be in my way on entry/exiting the car on DS, as I'm tall and barely clear the doorway as is. And I wanted it to be in reach, & for me to be able to use it, if driving by myself.

In them mounting position I've chosen, it can be used by all front & rear passengers. Plus it will be quickly removable, if rear passengers smoke.

I'll just carry a spare ashtray & spare backing plate in the trunk in spare tire cover's utility bag.
