I recently just purchased a 1991 Volvo 244 non-turbo for $1700. people I talk to say I got it at a great price. anyway I want to know is it any way possible to get more horsepower without a V-8 engine swap. also, what other volvo engines can I swap in for this week 114hp engine. and is their any unique bodykits for this type volvo. thanks!!!!! :) ;-)

congrats and welcome. There are a lot of engine choices ranging from turbo to um.. bigger turbo.. better go with the bigger turbo. A b23ft would be nice. You have a lot of researching to do. For the "body kit" I would suggest www.brickstylz.com
Enjoy your stay.

You could go with a DOHC head, big valves, lumpy cams, short, forged pistons, long conn rods, forged crank, light flywheel, some Weber DCOE 50's, a tube header, 2.5" exhaust, close ratio gearkit, 5.38 rear end with a ZF diff, some 41mm Bilstein coilover struts up front, some long coilovers in the back, 5-link the rear axle, Merkur 2.6 turn steering rack, rollcage, seam weld the bodyshell, some 740 ABS discs on the front with 2nd-gen RX7 calipers, hydraulic handbrake....
But a turbo is probably cheaper
Seriously, though, if it's an automagic, you'll free up a lot of power by just switching to a manual tranny. Already got the 5-speed? Then you might thing about a bigger exhaust, a cam, lightened flywheel, or lower rear end gears.
I'm just throwing these options out in case you are turbo-averse. I know some people are. Heck, I used to be. Especially after I had to swap one out.
Then I bought a 83 242 with a turbo, intercooler, and some Yokohama A032R's. THAT changed my tune. (Thanks Pat!)
