Alright I decided to make a video its 16megs so beware 56k

I need your help in determining if this is a normal sound. ever since i put this used intercooler i got from a friend. its been making Squeeling noises when i boost instead of whistling noises. You tell me if it sounds normal or not?

tell me if the sound on the video trips out.

The video and sound kinda don't match up all the time, if I fast forward it will sync up for a period and then jump out of place. Though that really doesn't matter in relation to hearing the sound.

As for the sound, I really have no clue. The only thing I can suggest is maybe the intercooler or a connection is leaking under boost.

it sounds like you are blowing air thru an opening via crack in the intercooler. Check it over.

Could this be a problem?

I'd say the amount of force needed to distort that part would be enough to induce a leak somewhere.

I think I read here of someone capping off the ends and pressurizing the unit to the boost PSI, + a little, that they were running at, in order to find leaks. Soapy water sprayed on the outside works really well for that. I think they used PVC end caps or something similar from a hardware store clamped into the silicone couplers with a schrader valve stem (all metal type used on some aftermarket wheels) bolted in the center of one. I remember seeing pictures and all.

Might try a search for intercooler leaks or intercooler cracks in all forums.

No clue about the sound man, best I can say is a small leak of some sort..

Have you thought about removing the intercooler from the setup just temporarily?

Edit: Hmm, I see that you say it definitely is in the intercooler...check all your hose clamps and connections too!

its your intercooler for sure, get a not f'ed up one. I might be able to find one laying around if you want me to send you one Alex.

Since my 240 is out of commsion this week, I took my BOV off and we rigged it onto my friends Merkur XR4TI. We home depoted it on, and the adaptor for the BOV we made does not have a groove land for the screws on the BOV, so it pushes air thru the small opening and makes that EXACT sound.

I caught you blipping the throttle before switching off!!! :-P

Seriously though, nice vid (although the wind noise with the window open was pretty annoying!). Your car even sounds a bit like mine on engine braking.

Not that I know anything about these things, but I'd put money on it being an air leak...and that intercooler is a good place to start looking. I liked the idea about the water...but how about submerging it like you would a punctured bike tyre? That might make it easier - Seal one pipe, blow into the other, and follow the trail of bubbles!

cheers

James

my 740 was sounding like that, i thought it was normal i was like "this turbo is way loud", it seems my CBV was being held on by one loose bolt and i was pissing air out to buggery
