July 19th:

Well Volvrat I has passed away and I am now breaking her for parts :(

For those of you who don't know my original Volvrat, affectionately known as the OVLOV, this was her:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs153.snc4/36966_417684224080_504404080_4461269_4124939_n.jpg

She died of a busted head gasket, that went with such style that the cam cover is welded to the head!!!!!

So bring on Volvrat II!! :D The spirit of the rat shall live on!!! Volvrat II has already gained the name of Zippy Lea too

Went to auction yesterday, and picked up a 1997 Volvo 940 SE wagon, for 325!!!!!!!! 1 previous owner, 145k on the clock, really happy with it. Got a few issues with her though, like the tail gate handle doesn't work on the outside, and some of the lights on the dash don't work, but otherwise, it's all pretty sweet.

Redblock turbo lump, not too bad condition. Bit tatty on the exhaust system, so that'll get ripped off and a straight through pipe will be installed, and the paintwork is pretty scratched and tatty too, so it'll all be going matt black again, but no rust this time.

Interior isn't too bad at all so will keep that as it is pretty much.

Gonna stick the 15G turbo off the 850 T5 on it as well as the manual boost controller and increase the boost a bit.

Got my sounds to stick in there too, and the roof rack to chuck up top again too

Best bit is, I have the whole car to get to a suitable ratty standard, by the 8th of August for Retro Rides show!! So with my days off, that works out as 5 full days for:

- Respray
- ICE install
- Fitting of roof rack, air horns, steelies and other bits

And hopefully time for a straight through exhaust to be sorted out too

August 12th:

So after 8 1/2 hours of hard work, and I mean VERY hard work, I have a new turbo on the wagon

Again, much thanks to the guys in Crayford at In Car Solutions

The original (and somewhat buggered) 13C turbo is gone and the 15G turbo off my old Volvo 850 T5 is on! Wooop wooooop!!!

Sounds soooo much better, much beefier now, no smoke, quieter too, and it really pulls well, even though I've set the boost lower cos I still need to sort out the intercooler pipework as it's all jiggled about now, and the air intake was on the top, and is now on the bottom of the snail. Helluva lot of work, but my god was it worth it!

There is a circlip that holds the core into the housing, and it took my mate and I half an hour just to get it back on!!! 4" circlip made of 3mm metal

So here she is, in her shiny(ish) snailish glory!!

New door cards :D Well, not exactly new door cards, but rather modified ones :D

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs294.snc4/41035_430888219080_504404080_4818682_2886597_n.jpg

Done the steering wheel too, and ripped out the airbag too (I hate airbags, and it adds to the rat look plus I now have an ashtray that I can reach easily no matter what :D )

Well after much arguing with, well, everything, I managed to get the new speakers in :D

Unfortunately after all the work, found that the bloody amp has packed up!! Ah well, guess I'll get a new JBL one, been needing to replace my Vibe amps with JBL ones anyways, so now I have a good reason to!

I also started tinting my windows but the bloody neighbourhood chavs decided to f**k it up for me and I ended up slicing my arm right open as they jumped on the car as I was sitting in the back trimming it a bit. They're just lucky I didn't manage to get out the trunk in time before they rode off on their bikes  I've decided I can't be arsed to pay out for more tint film, so I'm just gonna paint the inside of the windows. 100% tint, and damn sight easier to do too

But here's the result of today's work:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs393.snc4/45592_433167164080_504404080_4876816_7031219_n.jpg

Yes, they are shelving brackets holding the speaker pods up. There's another bracket on the other side too :) Hey, it works eh?

I know you guys are used to nice tidy installs which cost a fair bit and take a while to do, but y'all gotta remember, I'm all about the rat look. This works, very nicely, and the set up in the old Volvo was tested just under 130dB out of two 10" subs :D

Bad news - the turbo seal has blown :( Need to replace the turbo but luckily I should hopefully be getting one on Sunday off a mate of mine.

But enjoy the photos :)

Well some sad news, the engine is dead :( Checked everything and everything seems fine, but there is oil getting into the combustion chamber for some unknown reason.

Good news though - I've bought a Rover 3.5 litre V8 to drop into her!! Gonna be running on carbs and straight through pipes, so with a few little mods should see me to about 180 - 200hp :)

This is my new engine :D Not in yet, but will be sweet when it's in there!! Sooooo can't wait!!

Also ghetto tinted my windows. To those of you not completely familiar with the rat look scene, that means I painted my windows on the inside so they look tinted, but a fraction of the cost

I got bored today, so thought I'd play around with the car a bit.

Took the door cards off the rear doors, taped up and tidied the wiring, and painted it all matt black. Might do the same on the front doors too, but with speakers on there too :)

September 28th:

Had some trouble with the bell housing :( Went to fit it to the engine and found it didn't fit :( Then looking around spotted in small writing "300TDI" so it's from the diesel Landie, not the V8 like it was sold to me as, so that was a pain in the ass, but a couple of phone calls to the place and they're sending me the right one free of charge and unless they can arrange a courier to come n get the wrong one, I've now got a bell housing to put on the landie gearbox I have and sell it so hopefully get more money from it that way :)

Been cleaning today. Getting all the paint and crap off the rocker covers and the starter motor, and given it a bit of a polish, but it's still a 34 year old engine so gonna keep a bit of the older look on it, think it'll look nicer like that.

And I've been busy tonight, this has all been made in the last hour :) A lot of cutting with a hand saw keeping the volume down but I'm very happy with how it's looking so far :D

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs451.ash2/72487_459452989080_504404080_5428945_7348809_n.jpg

Just bought some new gauges and dials for the car, seeing as how I'm gonna be running larger tyres on the rear and the V8 engine too, that means the speedo and tacho will be out, so I thought "stuff it" and I've bought this for a real sweet price!

The physical construction of the dash is now complete :D

All that's left to do now for it is cut outs for the 4x 6.5" coaxial speakers that are going in there and the digital dashboard and then carpet it :D

December 23rd:

Well a bit of an update for you guys. The prop was too short to meet the gearbox by 55mm, so that has been holding up progress for the last month, but that spacer is now made up :D And now things can all start progressing again too :D

As for the dashboard, it's now looking a bit different too. The dials are now in, and you can see now why I decided to strip the old dash out and make the new one out of MDF :D

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1217.snc4/156983_484206439080_504404080_5813823_176111_n.jpg

I've got the dials in and the headlamp switch in too. I just need to get the fuel gauge, hazard, and fog light switches in there too, and then I can carpet the dash :D

Although the dials are there, they're not actually connected to anything yet, but they light up and look pretty :D

January 12th:

Well now I've had some free time and the weather has been ok-ish (still been tipping it down though so getting soaked :( ) I've managed to get a fair bit done so now, the next step is getting the engine in now :D Woop!!!

I've got the prop spacer in place, which was a pain in the ass to do underneath the car on oil and rain soaked ground with loads of leafs around the place!! A lot of effort lying on your back under a car doing 4 bolts up with spanners. It doesn't sound like it, but the blood was gone from my hands after each bolt!!! Plus sneezing whilst under there and head butting the undercarriage really doesn't help! :lol

But here it is, in place, all bolted up :D

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs049.snc6/167945_497820739080_504404080_6064317_7185292_n.jp g

Also been working on the wiring too, so I now have switches for the front and rear fog lights. The rear fog switch lights up when the lights are on, but the front one doesn't for some reason, but it works. I'll just sort out the wiring for it to light up when it comes to MOT time. No photos of them sorry.

Got my fuel gauge in too now, and here's a photo of it - it's the yellow thing :lol

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1354.snc4/162684_498315989080_504404080_6070590_7295757_n.jp g

It's a multimeter set to show resistance, so it works as follows:
2 = full
68 = 1/5 tank remaining
113 = fuel warning light would come on (if I had one)
131 = empty tank

After a lot of moving things about, hammering bits of metal, shoving and swearing, the engine is now 75% in :D Can't quite get the angle right for mating the gearbox and engine together, so going to either have to bash more of the cross member for the sump to drop down more or bash the bulk head to get the gearbox up more. Got to channel a little bit more out of the cross member to get a bit of clearance on the trans-tunnel and to have it so the sump doesn't rest on the cross member, but after that, it's a case of getting some engine mounts made up, and then rebuilding the engine :)

February 23rd:

Well the sump has been chopped, and the oil pick up is now made of 4 sections welded together to change the angle and length of it so it now fits too :)

I now have the clearance that I needed, so can now get my mate to see about making up the engine mounts, and then I can rebuild the engine :D Yay!!!

Well my bull bars are now all refurbed and they're on there temporarily while I make up new brackets as I lost the original ones (well, the car ate them and refuses to spit them back out from wherever they're stored!)

Are they bull bars, or 80s shutter shades?

And yes, they are legal as they were made and originally fitted back in the late 90s, just they were damaged so I got them refurbed :)

I have also sorted out my front doors too :D

Who needs door cards eh? Just extra weight that isn't needed

The law in the UK is that the windows to the front, left and right of the driver must be kept clear and untinted, so you can black out all the other ones, so that's fine :)

And if you think the whole car should be illegal, wait till you see the exhaust system ;) It'll be legal, but something totally different!!

I know about the rat taxi, but there are many many different styles of rat look, it's not as simple as you may think. Mine is styled on the post apocalyptic, Mad Max style rat look. My old one was the more traditional rat look with the rusty hood, but everyone is doing the rusty hoods these days so I went away from that.

Yea, I managed to pick this up 940 up for 300, about $460 CAN / $480 US, and I bought my old 850 for 500 which is around $780 CAN / $800 US. Get some good cheep motors over here :D

This is what I imagine might happen if Charlie Sheen and a super-bored wingnutty got together and built a car. While on LSD. Maybe. And then wingnutty walked away 10 mins into the build because he spotted a '34 Chevy across the street that was rusting away that he could awesomify with a Tig and a hacksaw.

I just don't possess the terrestrial phonics capable of expressing my utter surprise. My mind has melted.

Haha, yea, I'm Canadian but I live in England where a "beaver" is the ladies down stairs parts, so it makes sense here  We have loads of words for that anatomical part actually :p

The reason the B230 came out was because I had nothing but problems with the engine, and I wanted the reliability and the sound of the V8.

If I was after power, I'd have shipped my 800hp Chevy big block over from the states to fit in it, but I don't want that. I'll be aiming for about 200hp with the modifications and the carb set up, and if I get that, I'll be happy, but it's more for cruising than all out power.

LOL I'm one of the staff on that site  It's definitely not to everyone's taste, and some of the cars on there I'll agree are total crap, and really do insult the rat look. I love the rat rods, I just can't afford one, so have to use influences from them on my 945.

agreed, i think the problem is that everyone here, http://rat-look.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5136 thinks this project and the workmanship is so bad ass.

i guess if you look at some of the other members cars, you might begin to understand why.

Rat-Look.com FTW!!  I know we're not the most popular style but it's taking off with ratting out the newer cars like my 945 over here, but still the old skool rat rods are the best. I will own one, one day!!!

Not my style, but I love it anyway!

Love the way you've got your sound system set up!

I'm curious about the acoustics. Is it just dfeafiningly loud, or is it a good sound too? You've got enough speakers that with the right choices you'd cover a good bit of SQL

The sound system is both. It's got good quality on the sound, but it's also massively loud too. The loudness draws people in, but the sound quality impresses people too when they're there :D

Canada had slaves too you know....

And there was a lot more to the confederacy than slavery. I know they teach Canadian history in Canada, but before you automatically equate a confederate flag with slavery, you should read up on some of the real issues that caused the war.

Crazy_C
03-18-2011, 08:00 PM
Yea, I'm used to people hating on what I do with my cars, I know I've essentially destroyed this 945, but I'm rebuilding it in my own style now. Maybe one day the 940 will be a classic car, but right now, they're dime a dozen over here, the 700/900 series and 850s are all over the place here so why not eh? It's all in good spirit and good fun and that's the main thing.

Y'all wonder why I'm doing this, but I don't ask "why do it", I just ask "why not do it" and when I can't come up with a reasonable answer as to why not do it, I just do it :)

Here's an update though that I'm sure most of you will like!! This just looks sooo right in the engine bay of the 940!

It's a mid 80s V8 from the SD1, and it's a fair bit lighter than the B230 actually which we were a bit surprised by!! Not huge amounts lighter, but it is noticeable when maneuvering it.

Ahh, you noticed it then ;) They're on backwards, pointing forwards, as the don't have enough space to point backwards. The exhausts will go out through each side of the front bumper infront of the front wheels :)

Yea, there's no space for the exhausts to go down, or backwards, so the P38 headers I'm using are on the wrong way round so that I can then just go outwards and have the exhausts exit the bumper on the sides :)

Why not use a 4.6 from a later model Range Rover or even the 3.9 from a Classic Range Rover or Discovery? Seems sort of a waste to use that motor instead of fixing the Volvo motor.

Did i read that you're using the stock Volvo gearbox behind it? How did you make that work?

I find it strange you got rid of your 850 because of a blown headgasket, which is easy to fix or get parts for, and start all over again on another car.

If you all look I have never claimed it to be a rat rod so dunno what y'all are getting so worked up about! It's rat look, ie making it look ratty, not trying to make it look like a rat rod cos it never will.

I got rid of the 850 with the blown head gasket cos it needed a new engine as it had gone that badly but I couldn't get a decent engine for under 500, and that's how much I paid for the whole 850!! Volvo engines really have been the most unreliable engines I've come across. 2 Volvos, 2 major engine failures! Why I didn't fix the 940 engine after I replaced the turbo for the third time!!

I chose the 3.5 purely cos it's cheap and easy to get a hold of bits. I'm not looking for performance, otherwise I'd use the big block chevy lump I have, but that's not my plan for this car, it's just gonna be a nice, comfortable daily driver and for cruising around.

You did read right, I am using a factory Volvo box on it. It's the auto box code ZF 4HP22. Landrover use a 4 wheel drive variant of this gearbox on the Discovery. So use the Volvo auto box, Disco bell housing and torque converter and it all fits together nicely :)

RWD is comming along, lots of holes cut and I have a mock up block mounted to the subframe facing the proper way. Still deciding on a couple things.

I meant no agression by the dick punch. I just felt like telling you when I read you were putting the rover in, thats the first thing that popped into my head. If you were going for sound, you should of swapped the whiteblock with a new hg from your 850 in, best sounding engine imo.

the purpose of this 'rat-look' is to purposefully degrade your car to a piece of **** beater before it can happen in its own time?

i could understand if you got a stripped 940 shell with no dash, no stereo, no interior, no motor, no trans and you have no money but you need something to drive, so you come up with this.

maybe next time you should buy a car from the breakers and build it up, instead of building it down?

A load of my old cars were from the breakers actually, but it's more hassle than it's worth as regs here mean you have to take the vehicle for an inspection by an official from the vehicle operations standards agency and they need to see it repaired to an almost new state.

There are different aspect to rat look but the main jist of it is to have cars that look ratty, be it looking broken, looking like a PoS beater, looking like something from Mad Max (which is my preferred style) and many more too!

Not everything has or needs a purpose. Some things are done out of impulse and personal preferance.

Hell, I took my rear door handles off (aerodynamiks), put s70 ones on the front and broke the plastic thing trying to make the key work, so essentially the only way I get in and out of my car is the trunk (which by the way requires a different key, its from my blue parts car). My interior is gutted so I crawl 3/4of the way into the trunk to grab the metal wire that unlocks the rear door, pull the other metal arm to open the door, then have to fight gravity and rubberized asphault that never hardens to open the door.

Just so I can get out and open the rear door all the way, reach for the front door pin, and pull it up. It had a full nice leather interior before. Why you ask. Because it makes me laugh so fcking hard every morning and any time I need to get into it. Just how akward it is. I enjoy it, don't know why, it takes 5 minutes to get into, but I love it. It has absolutly no purpose, other than I look like a pimp with two different volvo keys on my keychain, and I tell the ladies i'm Ricky Bobby.

The reason the B230 came out was because I had nothing but problems with the engine, and I wanted the reliability and the sound of the V8.

If I was after power, I'd have shipped my 800hp Chevy big block over from the states to fit in it, but I don't want that. I'll be aiming for about 200hp with the modifications and the carb set up, and if I get that, I'll be happy, but it's more for cruising than all out power.

why didnt you just spend a few making the B230 reliable on sensible boost if you only want 200bhp ??

And I'm pretty sure that the buick engine was a V6, was it not? and Rover bought the rights to the motor so they wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel making a V, and proceeded to add 2 cylinders and redesign a bunch of stuff differently, once they had the backbone of basic design from the buick motor.

Maybe I'm thinking of something else though.

I like your originality. +1000 for not getting upset at all the dick comments. I'm not calling anyone a dick but some are just rude lol.

Wait, you modified your car in a manner that I don't particularly like?

WTF! GTFO! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! WHAT A PILE OF CRAP!

Next time, consult with me before you make any changes to your car so I know that when I click a project thread it will agree with my exact tastes. You go about acting like this is your car and you have the freedom to do what you want with it. Geeze, kids these days...

I love this thread. (lets be clear, I don't love the car)

No, that's what became of the 215ci aluminum V-8 of the 60's found in Buicks.

They fixed the major design flaw, then built it into an engine that produced so little power that it was a total waste of metal, installed it in hideous cars and fed it with mediocre carbueretion.

not heard the V6 bit before but yes to the buick bit, as V8's go though a waste of time when the B230FT with MBC would put out the same power but fair play for the effort

If i see zombies running towards me(although i don't think they can run[as if zombies are even real]) im jumping in the 940 with the blown turbo seals verses the rat look 940. lol

I think its great you are building this and having fun but think you would be better off if some aspects of the build were better thought out. That brush bar on the front and the roof rack have horrible proportions. Im a huge zombie apocalypse fan and my volvo wagon might turn into something sorta mad max/urban utilitarian vehicle but everything will have a purpose and make the vehicle perform better for a fictional purpose lol. But i can tell you it will look NOTHING like this contraption!
