Just acquired this , a 1980 242 with m46 and in a paintcode I been wanting for 10 + years. Forrest green.

Came as shown, with some odd 3 piece alloys on it..

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/green2424.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/green24212.jpg

Plans are to, clean it up, and get 100%. retain the b21f / m46 and likely megasquirt it. And that's it. Just clean her up, and get real tidy and enjoy!

The paint looks poor..

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/green2426.jpg

But will come out fine once a bit of this is done..

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/green24221.jpg

Plan on retouching a few various spots on her, and yanking the interior out and washing it. Pretty darned stoked to finally get the one I been looking for.

I couldn't find TR3, so I bought some Meguiars product that is specifically for removing oxidation. Must say it is working quite well, I have some 3m rubbing compound that I initially started with and the Meguiars product is blowing it out the water in regards to ease of use and work required to get the paint back to life.

I don't know what these wheels are. They just have "JR" or something like that stamped on 'em.

got most of the paintwork buffed out.. It's turning out quite well!

Gonna be a sweet car!

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/green19806.jpg

Next is getting some tires, new strut inserts, lowering it a bit.. Then interior work and blower motor replacement. Then just enjoy! This beast is proving to need little if anything mechanically. Not bad for a 30 year old car that sat since 2002 prior to me getting it.

I second this question.

I've been using for years and years the 3m product rubbing compound and finish/swirl mark remover. But that product is not what it used to be with the EPA.. So I got some Meguiars "ultimate compound" and rubbed the car out with that instead. I still had some of the old 3m stuff which I initially started with, but ran out quickly of. This Meguiars stuff blows the 3m out of the water. The ease and use of it, I hand buffed the entire car using microfiber cloths, followed with Meguiars cleaner wax afterward.

Here is a link to the product in question:

http://www.meguiarsdirect.com/detail/MEG+G17216

I'll definately be using it from this point on, I like it far better than TR3 too.

Andy,

Nice score. Would be cool to see it in Portland in two months...

Anyway, do you think the Ultimate Compound would remove the roof rack shadow from a silver 245?

03-21-2011, 01:38 AM
Thanks for the kind comments!

It could , 245GT but it's all dependant upon how much clear coat is left on that roof.. if there is enough clear left on the roof, about 3-4 applications should get most of it off, but no matter what you do, there will always be a shadow line because of UV clearcoat exposure will be a different tint on the portion where the rack covered it vs the rest of the roof. But the lines should be 90% gone by then. I've had do rework a couple that way.. It will definately look lots better after buffing.

Looks great, came a long way in appearance in a short time. Did you find this car on bay area craigslist? A friend of mine was looking at an '80 green 242 listed on cl somewhere on the peninsula (I think). I told him he should buy it. If this is the same car, he missed out big time! Seems like too big of a coincidence to not be the same car...

Did some interior renovation this weekend.

Found a 1980 244 with the same paint code and interior at the pnp, it had just barely logged 80,000 miles on it. Score ! Seat covers for the front, rear seat is in, along with the front carpet from the 80k 244. All has been washed, and cleaned 100%. Front seats rebuilt, such a comfy ride for sure. Still need to detail the various vinyl/plastic panels in the car but it's gone a long way..

From this :

Ugly drivers seat that had too many burritos farted on..
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/green2428.jpg

Passenger seat not much more appealing , grandma bits covering the ugly faded , discoloured seat covers:
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/green2427.jpg

Rear seat wasn't much better either. Faded, stained and tattered:

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/green24211.jpg

To this:

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/242interior1.jpghttp://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/242interior3.jpghttp://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/242interior2.jpg

Next is front airdam ****, and some minor paintwork.

I'm very happy with this car , and to someone asking if it was on CL recently. Yes it was - and the car in person was nothing like the pics listed on his ad. The seller even disclosed to me the pics he put on his ad were taken years ago. But I saw the potential and gave him his full asking price, it's not like these are common cars anymore (were they ever?) and the paintcode had me won over.

I told him I'd buy it, and then he told me he couldn't find the title.. A couple of days of suspense went by and he found it. it was his moms car , that had passed away back in 2003 or so. So i was a bit worried about that but it worked out in the end as I got the original title for the car and it is in my name now.

So far everything on this one has just been falling into place, paint overall is good, then the interior bits show up at pnp. It's nice to have one work out like this.

The car runs out great too, alot of major maintenance was done prior to it being parked back in 2003. My poor 245 '92 turbo wagon is simply ignored right now!

Moar Info on da Orange 245?????????

Brandon
04-05-2011, 01:45 AM
Andy, if you ever let that car go I think i'll be a repeat customer. That is hands down one of my favorite paint codes on a 242 as well! Question, did you use the same paint treatment stuff on the blue 245 I picked up as well? It could use some love on the driver's side door where that white hazing or whatever is, but if you already gave it a shot then no point in me buying all the products and trying it again.

Moar Info on da Orange 245?????????

I think it's his brother's car?

andysbeta
04-05-2011, 11:36 AM
The orange 245 is my brothers car that lives in Colorado . He was here visiting last week. I bought it back in 2005 off Ebay, then it became his when **** hit the fan.

That drivers door is full of bondo on the '76, and the paint was laquer so it's done. Nothing you can do about it aside from repainting the door at this point. I plan on keeping this 242 for a long time, it is now my main daily driver! The 1992 245 I have, it not practical for daily driver use, that b230ft/AW71 combo is a major gas hog. Oh well. Parked it is now.

+1. After driving the 245 back to the east and for a few weeks now I got into the 244 the other day to drive it up to Napa. Right then I realized how much I love the smaller wheel.

No smog here. Just take the title in, and give $75 and walk out with registration, plates and the title comes in the mail about one week later.

I'm very happy to have the old greenie back.

Today, I took care of this:

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/524td/greenheatercore.jpg

Kept on getting residue on the inside glass.. And when I was poking through the wiring inside the car to do the EFI conversion I saw a bunch of coolant on the KJet lamba wire harness. Yep, so the heater was replaced, I just did the ol' cut the top of the HVAC and lift the core out, slide in the new and replace the cut HVAC plastics and seal it up with good ol' gorilla tape. Took 2 1/2 hours to do it that way, vs the tear the entire HVAC apart and take it out of the car which makes it into a true 8-10 hour project.

This last week the car has been upraded to EFI, I was going to MS it but I am going to MS my M47 Grandpa gold 745 wagon instead. I had a complete LH1.0 B21F EFI setup with a reman ECU, almost New AMM so I made a custom harness for it all and got it in the car. It purrrrsss and runs alot stronger. No one likes LH1.0 as it tends to be misunderstood. I think it is a great EFI system.

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t94/andythrsh/524td/greenefi.jpg

Tomorrrow the 240T exhaust system I ordered from FCP will be coming in, so I'll be fitting this exhaust onto the greenie, and will delete the cat converter while at it. The idea is, when I finally get around to +T'ing this beast I'll have a decent stock 240T exhaust in place already and can then just mate the downpipe to it.

Very nice Andy! You have a car worthy of the Million Dollar Highway. Take it up to Uuray or Telluride, but not over Engineers' Pass.(flaunting local knowledge). Or down to Mesa Verde.

You are in the best part of a beautiful state.

andysbeta
09-26-2011, 10:49 AM
I'm just 8 miles from Mesa Verde. Know this area very well, as I grew up here. I always like going Silverton through Ouray, then hitting Telluride and looping back to Dolores and back home. Did Engineers pass in old orange before (1976 245). Great driving up for sure. Lots of dirt roads to play on.. You can actually enjoy driving here still.
