How do I start this, I painted my car. The car was a nice 412 Green color but it had issues with the clearcoat on the trunk/roof/hood.

This gave me the opportunity to do something that I've been wanting to do for awhile, paint it black, satin black. Not just paint it like a normal person would but do the legendary $50 internet special paint job. Well let me tell you it cost more than $50 in materials. Anyway there were some other external additions I wanted to change/add. I wanted better lights so I opted for some eCodes and some nice Hella Black Magic 500 lights. I also wasn't too happy with my modded 740 SE spoiler so I took that off and went back to the eBay special lip spoiler. Since I was going with a black I wanted to add some pin stripping to kind of capture the old school hot rod look. I also debated putting it on steelies painted black with a red rim stripe, but I'm going to stick with my gold BBSes. So here is what it looks like now:

And one I'm not sure about (I've taken it off and haven't decided if it is too much)

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f155/Natural244/940%20Projects/Paint/DSC_0008.jpg

Yes, there are some roller marks and drips here and there but for the most part it is pretty decent from 20 feet.

My next project is to tackle the interior and get it cleaned and fixed up with nused seat leathers and do something about the carpets.

Anyway I'm pretty happy with the look now, might need some minor tweaks. The Rustoleum has been on for about 4 months now and went through the Winter here in NC without any issues.

Some evolutions of this car's appearance...

Otherwise, looks good. Not sure I like the pinstriping decals though.

Yeah I know, winters are relative. For us in NC is was pretty cold and more snow "events" than usual. Mostly the paint held up to the saline solution with which they spray the roads. Nice thing the stripes being vinyl is I can add/remove as I see fit and to suit my mood.

i love it! so much.

412 is one of my favorite stock colors, but i hate how the paint fades and turns to poo.

What the hell is up with the hood vent and the pinstriping? The satin black is fine...but the pinstriping? Dear lord. That is horrendous.

Ya know, what I have learned over time is that doing what makes me happy is what counts. I agree some of the items (lightbar and vent) don't have that showroom quality fit but they can be tweaked and worked on over time (of course I say that but in reality the time is what I lack so I dabble here and there). The other thing I've learned is you try something and if you don't like it you can change it. I have no doubt that this car will change again at some point when I'm done playing with this look. I realize it does not appeal to everyone, but if it did it would just another Volvo and have no other distinction other than being another 940 with shiny paint and BBS wheels. I see these older cars as something of a canvas to be played with to mold and re-mold as I see fit.

Thanks for you opinion guys I can appreciate them.

Thanks. You would be amazed how much heat pours out of that vent. No purpose really other than to allow for heat to escape.

Real pin-striping is cool.

Decals, not so much.

Buy some 1-Shot and learn to pull some lines.

How much did you spend on paint and supplies? I've read it quickly turns into a $200 job...

Not liking the flat black, it looked really nice in green with the gold BBSes  But I do like the style of your pinstripes. You did them yourself ? Gotta say theyre pretty tight.

Yeah rain does get in when it is sitting, but it pretty much turns to steam. Also dries off fast after sitting in rain.

Well, yeah more like that. Lots of sandpaper, 2 quarts of paint, cleaning supplies, mineral spirits, rollers, sponge brushes.... it all adds up.

I wish I were that talented, but sadly no. These a vinyl stickers from a place called Twisted Chrome Pinstripes. Using the vinyl is the fun part of it because I can change it up when I want.

Hey! We got 3 snows!

it's not winter unless it's below freezing from late September to early April

:-P

Seriously, though, I've been to NC, you don't have winters. You have a hot season and a hotter season.

All the others I've seen were from spray cans. . . I've seen a few cars that look daaannnggg beautiful and came in well under 100 bucks all supplies included.

I love satin black over Matte black, but if you add some gloss black sections, it will break the body up and look pretty awesome IMO. From what I understand to make it gloss you paint the sections you want with clear coat.

Can we get some zoomed out pics? I don't think there are that many 940's with BBS rims in stock colour myself, seems to be more common to paint cars with faded paint satin or matte black. If we were talking about VW's, then yes, everything has BBS rims...

Actually I like the idea of tone on tone. I'll think about this and see what I can come up with. Any recommendations of which parts to gloss or matte? Maybe gloss between the tail lights in the trunk lid recess.

So do I :-P I still have 2 new ones, never mounted, in the garage as spares.

This tramp stamp thing is funny because I was going for the old school pinstripe like on hot rods like this:

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR5rR8EuGPRW0MG4ZrMWO7O9Etekfuue bVNlSriwYm_Z5f6ZDNH4Q

I'm sure the pinstripes were around much longer than the "tramp stamp".
