This project won't be too long, so I decided that it didn't really need an thread under "projects and restoration" but if a mod disagrees feel free to move it. Work will start today or tomorrow, just figured I would have the thread ready
Plans are as follows: change entire wiring harness from front to back, newer dash, tan interior, newer steering column, locks, and rear axle from my 87 donor car.
Look wise: US turns, and american middle-years roof rack, slammage, whitewalls, and moondiscs on the 15" steelies (140 rims front, 940 in the rear) rocking 165 tires at the front and 185's in the back
Story:
For years I've been on the search for an poo brown wagon, I had an picture in my mind of some sort of retro looker, didn't have an exact plan, but during the years of search for a worthy wagon the plan fell slowly together bit by bit, and I started the hunt for parts + I had some moondiscs lying around after I gave up on my 142
( http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=164445) They cost me 300 bucks so I just HAVE to use them for something.
Then last summer I got a call from a buddy of mine, he had stumbled over an poo brown 245 in an barn, powered by the awesome powerhouse of an B19!!, it had been standing there for 9 years, was absolutely filthy, but pretty good in the body. I told the owner that I would take it of him and offered him 300 bucks for it, got the standard reply "I'll think about it, and let you know" back.
A week later my buddy calls again, he had been driving past that farm just as they were loading some other junk cars on a truck, and my 245 was next in line, so he stopped and bought it to save it from an certain death.
Next week my buddy's 245 turbo super exploded, and since the poo 245 was titled in his name, he got it fixed up, inspected, and registered. He used it for a couple of months while he was rebuilding his 245, and then sold it to me in the winter for 1000 bucks so he broke even.
The car, when I got it in the middle of the winter.

I don't like those headlights so I changed 'em for some smaller squares
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r366/mathiasmellum/DSCI0004-3.jpg
Sold the stock turn signals to towery and replaced them with US turns (thanks Billy780) redwood chair sorted me with mint amber reflectors for 'em (not mounted yet). Also shown 140 steelie

And with moondisc
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r366/mathiasmellum/prvemontering.jpg
I just had to have an beige TB sticker for it to match the interior, also nothing screams class like the brown/beige combo EDIT: bad pic, will get a better one

Donor car, witch will donate: wiring harness, steering column, locks etc.

Thats all I have for now, hopefully I'll have more updates today or tomorrow.

Thats the exact same colour as my 245. :) Its a nightmare trying to match the paint where Ive fixed some small rust patches on the wheel arches though. Dealer wants 40 bucks for a small bottle of touch up paint, probably need more than one too :omg: Currently just covered it up with the closest match I could do with a rattle can, need to find something better.
Mysigt med bajsbrunt. :) Vad är det för skillnad på rattstången i donatorbilen och den som sitter i den bruna?

I know, a buddy has one in that pale yellow color.. an almost equally awesome color

Yeah I've heard that its an horrible color to match, but I'm planning on giving it a new coat of brown in a couple of years or so, it's not as mint as I want it to be

So I've been having fun with that lately, not got much else done, luckily it wasn't so much that the brown car got "ruined"

Flooding dealt with ,so I took a couple of hours stripping the donor car, wieringharness is ready to come out now, have also been removing wires for all kinds of crap that has been wired into the car over the years..
Before I got the drain opened, was 3" of water in there
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r366/mathiasmellum/vann.jpg
Nothing exciting really, just a stripped down 245

I'll keep updating this
Strip down continues, but now on the brown one.managed to strip it down to this yesterday
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r366/mathiasmellum/dash.jpg
found some surface rust
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r366/mathiasmellum/drk.jpg
Only thing that is left to disconnect on the brown one, is the headlamps and tailgate wiring.
So tomorrow I should be able to start moving stuff from the white one. I'm just hoping that the firewall plate are the same between the two cars, would make it so much easier to just move it over from the white one to the brown one. Instead of stuffing all of it through that tiny hole that the enginebay harness go through.
Edit: Oh and my roof rack is payed and hopefully shipped. YESS!!

Not much picture worthy going on, keep putting the wagon back together, moving ish from the white to the brown one, sound insulation, heater, the vents under the dash, etc etc etc. it will basically be an 87 model on the inside.
Going to pick up some saab 900 shocks for the front, and some saab 99 (I think it was) shocks for the rear tomorrow, so I can start with the slammage as soon that I'm done with the interior / wiring harness.
Bought some firestones today.. Fronts, 165/80-15 on a 4.5" ET45 140 steelie

I know what you mean, I'm single and happy that way, get more ish done.. I will continue to update this, even tho it almost seems that I'm writing a diary here.. Probably not too interesting as it doesn't involve an turbocharger yet.

Usually it takes 7-8 days before things arrive to the recipient in the states, so it must be there any day now

Almost done with the wiring and stuff. Have to pull some wires from the roof of the donor, then I can put the dash in, plug everything in, connect the battery, and hopefully there won't be raining sparks
Pretty damned boring to do this swap, I also have another car that I'll do the exact same thing to later this year:barf: Luckily suspension, and body stuff is next.. that'll keep me going:lol:

Sweet. I would love to find a rust-free brown 245. Brown, Black and Beige (in that order) are the best looking colors 240s came in IMO.

Mine isn't rust free, but nothing serious.. Think I'll give it a new coat of brown in a couple of years, has many parking dings I would like to take care of.
Have connected the battery, YAY!! no sparks fires etc, but something is wrong.. I get the drivinglights on position number 1 and nothing on 2, only thing that hasn't stayed with the wiringharness when I moved it over, is that connector thing on the back of the ignintion barrel. So I'm thinking that I may have put it on 180 degrees wrong.
will have a go on it tomorrow.
Mattis
04-19-2011, 12:10 PM
Looks like all my problems was because of the ignition barrel switch... the one I changed too apparently was broken:grrr: witch resulted in a lot of headscratching.. Oh well
Finally I can start putting the rest of it together, and start mocking up the front suspension with the saab front dampers. Will be back with pics once there is something worth taking pictures of

Thanks to dakar09 that took the time to send me one.
Have also started trial fitting the saab dampers at the front, left the shock nuts soaking in WD 40 as they were rusty as hell, so nothing worth taking pictures of yet.
Will also post about them in that "short strut inserts" thread, when I've figured out exactly what has to be done.

No problem getting it together.. just waiting for a buddy to show up with a pop-nut kit, so I can mount it..
Been lazy over the easter.. Mostly been buying awesomatron stuff for it. After buying a tan leather shift boot I started wondering how the .... I could get the car even more tan on the inside. Then I remembered that volvo had some tan dashboards in the 80's, that resulted in a can of tan interior paint on its way north:lol:
Whitewall
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r366/mathiasmellum/Hjul.jpg
Had some rubbish masking tape, but that can probably be fixed easily
Thinking with the 900 front dampers, that it may be better if I change the bearings in the top mounts.. as volvo dampers are 18mm and the saab's are 16.. think a 1mm thick adapter will break almost instantly

Interesting, I don't think I've ever seen a cab forward tractor. As for the rig on the back, as the old farm saying goes, if you can't buy one, build one. :-D

Nice! My wife has the same color in 242DL style. She hates it, lol. But i dropped in my old B230FT aw71, threw in some 92 240 A/C, power windows, keyless entry, black headliner GL seats, black carpet, stereo, and fresh doorpanels to match, and an 86+ dash, sitting on some nice ronal 16's. The car is pretty decent, the interior is nice...but the paint is meh...i should prolly try to buff it out.

But I might have found an GT lip. But I won't decide before its spring as the car is parked for the winter.
I have no idea what's available for saabs, but there probably is some stiff dampers available. The ones I bought are oil, and the cheapest I could find (30 bucks each).

Why not? My poo brown wagon has 5% tint in all the rear glass, with such a dark paint colour it doesn't look out of place at all, I really like it. Some paint codes suit tint much better, I think the brown really does. Each to their own though, its your car!

The wiring swap was pretty easy, the most difficult part on this "project" was to get time to work on the damned thing:lol:

Do i understand it right if u put a spacer on top of the Saab struts? cause i'm also thinking about driving saab shocks, have them at home already, but i don't want to cut the strut housing if it's not needed. Does the top of the struthousing not hit the top of the spring"housing"
Great car!

Yes I made a spacer, witch were on top of the shock. On the top mounts I had to press out the bearings, and replace them with others, cause the saab shock is smaller in that area, I'll post a paint drawing of how I did it
Do you mean, if the suspension bottoms out? If so, no it don't, not yet at least, but I haven't driven it too much

I replaced the bearings with some with a bigger hole, and made a "hat" witch I pressed into the bearing, to make the hole smaller, as the saab shock is 2mm smaller than the volvo one, I could not find bearings with the correct inner dimension, so I chose to do it this way.
On the top spring disc (I don't know the english word for it) I just welded a washer with a 2mm smaller hole, for the same reason as above
If you don't understand what I mean, just ask, and I can try to explain better

Well the DD is going black/gray on the inside, so the dash and center console will go over into "the browning".

Even tho the dash is half tan it will match the tan interior better

Thanks:) Most of it is, there are some rust and some dents, hopefully I'll afford to fix the dents, and paint it in a couple of years.
Well I got it from its parking space today, amazingly it didn't get stuck in the 2" of snow:lol:

I must admit that there is some differences in the ride height:lol:
Very cool to see a serious lowering :) Might have to try that myself on my 75 242.
How is the ride with it being this low, does the suspension bottom out at every bump in the road or is it still ok?

It's pretty stiff, haven't bottomed out yet, but I'm willing to bet that it will happen sooner or later

By pure luck, I found an EFI system from an B19, so the wagon will be injected soon-ish
No pics, as the computer I normally use, died and I lost all my pics:grrr:

Well the wagon is ready to hit the streets, had to fit a new windshield to get it EU approved but it's done, and I'm diggin' the way it looks.
Doing small stuff like changing bumpers, fitting air dam, and cleaning stuff while I'm waiting for the papers from the DMV
Pics from a couple of days ago, will post a couple more later today

http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r366/mathiasmellum/DSCN1236.jpg
Next big-ish steps on this one will be.
1: Fitting the injection system to the B19
2: airbags
3: Taking care of the rust
4: Get it re-sprayed

After some digging in the shed, I found an commando air dam, witch naturally went on. Helped a lot I think, looks better from the front now

Went to check out that B19E injection (in an folkrace car, thats why everything looks like poo), will need a lot of cleaning, but should be cool when I've swapped it in

Mattis tip: If you're planning on running whitewalls, go with inserts.
This is what's left of my painted budget-whitewalls, or should I say tanwalls. I got moon port-a-walls on the way

Nice! This is what I'm doing next.. Putting an older front end/US front end on an 81 245 diesel.
GSXR750 throttle bodies, and LH 2.4 bought...
And yes the engine will stay 1,9, doubt that anyone have ever tried this on a B19 before.. 'Cause nobody is that stupid
Very nice. The interior matches the car well and gives it a more modern feel.
The B19 is a 2,0 though. :-P

It looks pretty freakin cool, Mattis. I LOVE those moon discs..and although the painted tires didn't stay white, the light brown color they turned into actually go with the car's theme.
Nice work on the interior, too.

I built the car 'cause I had the moondiscs:lol:
Yeah the tanwalls kinda work, I'll probably get some cokers or similar type during the next couple of years, but now a days most of my money go to "project house" (seen in the background)
These arrived
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r366/mathiasmellum/itb.jpg
I'll have to make an intake over the winter so that I can do an LH 2.4, and M47 swap to it when the spring comes again

Engine stuff can wait until the house project is done..
This year I'll just be driving this thing, but I have invested in some audio stuff, being absolutely clueless in the world of audio, I took a chance that its good stuff.
Probably good enough to go around blasting metal
