just bought one a few weeks ago. I have driven 244s and 245 for years, and I really like 245s. but their is something speical about driveing a 242. It's the same car, but something feels more interesting about the driving experience of the car. I won't buy that it's lighter weight and it handles differnt, but what fun cars.

242 are cool cause you dont have that post right next to your shoulder, you have that big ol' window.

its got 2 doors, making it more sporty, therefore making you think it drives different?

i went from a 244 to my wagon to my 2 door and honestly it feels wayyyyyy better than the previous cars. idk how but it just does. one of my favorite things is the longer window on the drivers door so you can see your blind spot better where the 244/245 have a post.

maybe since 245s and 244s have more doors than 242s, they feel more floppy (for lack of better words). less doors = moar stiff, right?

No the larger opening is less stiff.
They are a tad lighter without the rear doors.

244/245 & 242 'feel' pretty much the same to me. What surprises me is that people hot-rod 244's. I mean would you hot rod a 4 door Chevelle or GTO?:-P

Exactly. This means you can comfortably put your arm up on the door with the window down. Can't be done on a 244...

Don't worry Josh almost needs a special steering wheel so he can look through it to see where he's going.

girth is what matters, or so I've heard.

I have seat track extenders installed on my 245. So when I look directly to my left, I'm actually looking out the rear door's window. If it was a 242, I'd be looking out that big rear pop-out window!

I've never owned a 242, but I don't find the 244 or the 245 windows an issue.

I'm not sure it has anything to do with blind spots, I think the 240 series is one of the car with the least blinf spots around, even the 850 has good clean views all around! I think modern cars suck with all the blind spots they have, I know my 240 wagon and 242 will never need back-up camera's!
It's more on the fact that something as useful as a 240 wagon is some how related to a "Sport"y car, I mean wow I'm driving a 240 but I don't necessarily have to be transporting a bed or some crazy amount of stuff around!

Yes, the 242 is more comfortable to drive with an arm out on the
windowsill. The 245 is better for hauling fridges.

Fortunately, we have one of each.

I can vouch for the 2 door factor. I had a 244 as my first Volvo. I loved it. I truly did. I built my first engine for it, I did everything for the first time on it. I now have a 242 and I took the engine out of my 244 for the 242. It doesnt even run yet but I love it so much more. It does just "feel" different. I can only imagine when I drive it.

The short strut coil overs, bangarang wheels and custom Recaros will probably make a tick of difference too though.

haha i hear ya, my 242 is a rust bucket, but driving it is absolutely awesome, every time me and my girl take it around I get out, look at her and tell her how sweet that car is, my girlfriend couldn't agree more!

For some reason I like 244's more than 242's. No offense, because all 240's are awesome.

I got a 2-door just because I already have a dd sedan. I love driving the 242 though, I agree, its just "something" about it thats better than 244s of equal caliber. That said, I desperately want a 245.

I gotta say being a tall guy-242 is where its at. There is so much more room...i feel then 244/245.

I've driven a few 244's, not driven a 245, but haven't driven either enough to be able to comment on differences. Yes, there was something 'different', but probably just from driving someone else's car. The 242 has had the best driving position of any vehicle I've ever driven though.

That's more to do with seating position than my shortness. Dick.

242s definitely feel less claustrophobic than 244/5s, in my limited experience. I've driven all three body styles and don't really have a preference; with the mirrors set right, my blind spot ends up next to the B-pillar regardless of the number of doors.

As far as a racecar standpoint goes... The doors on a 244 or 245 are tiny... Getting in and out w/ a cage can be a little bit of a squeeze without a quick disconnect steering wheel hub... The big doors of the 242 are a nice feature there. Also dimensionally they are pleasing. 244/5 are certainly more practical though.
