I haven't really posted much about this car, since there hasn't been much to say about it. It's a bone-stock, automatic '89; about the only thing notable about it is that it has a K-block motor, so it has (in theory) big rods and all that jazz. So far, I've rebuilt the driver's seat, replaced the heater fan motor, installed a decent stereo, and done some basic maintenance (timing belt, water pump, plugs and wires, etc). I also installed a new (stock) exhaust and got some holes in the header pipe welded up.

About a month after I got it, the cam plug let go on the highway, and I only found out after I took the exit for my destination. When I came to a stop, the car was smoking copiously, and almost all the oil was gone; fortunately, it was still running fine. I installed a new cam seal and IPD's retainer plate and topped off the oil; it started up without a hitch and has been fine since. Around that time, I also installed IPD's OD solenoid blockoff plate. The solenoid was shot, and when I did get OD, it would only last for about 5 miles until the trans warmed up.

Since December, I've probably put 6000 miles on the car, and it hasn't missed a beat. It's been a great DD. I'm hoping to do a low-power +T and a manual swap this summer. I've also got a B230 non-AC PS bracket, so that will be making its way on in the next couple weeks. The current AC system never got swapped to R134, and the compressor is seized solid, so I'd rather just ditch it.

Nope-the only thing I did was tweak the levels a little, since my crappy old point-and-shoot tends to turn things blue.

OEM circuit boards, clean contacts, and Volvo bulb sockets do wonders for the taillight function-the car can't get out of its own way, but at least people can see it. :D

Installed some new motor mounts and the mythical B230 non-AC power steering bracket over the weekend.

The PCV system in this car must have been neglected for a LONG time-everything on that side of the engine bay was covered in sludge, making this job easily the messiest I've ever undertaken. Yes, my timing cover is off-I'm going to reinstall it this week.

Between the new mounts, the resurrected power steering, and the weight loss, the car feels much more sprightly now, and parallel parking and such is a breeze. I forgot how nice the steering feel is when everything's working properly.

I polished all the paint above the beltline trim today with some Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. It doesn't really show in the pics I posted earlier, but the paint on all the horizontal surfaces was pretty oxidized. The compound did a great job of cleaning that stuff off and restoring the shine of the paint, even when applied by hand-I highly recommend it.

I'll snag some pics tomorrow.

Got a new camera (Canon Powershot G12), so I reprised an earlier shot to see how it stacked up. You can't tell a whole lot of difference at this resolution, but the amount of detail picked up by the Canon absolutely kills my old Nikon P/S.
