What is the best cd reciever that will fit in the upper dash location without any or little modification?

brother has an alpine... nice, expensive (dunno what he paid), but the mechanical arm "flip face" setup is very poorly made and seems quite delicate.
i give it a 7/10

I have a sony (bought in '00),medium priced, piss poor quality, skips when shifting to 2nd gear
survey says 3/10

I had a kenwood, cheap under 100$, was great but had issues reading CDR's
ranking in at 7/10

g/f has a new panasonic, expensive $300 or so, works like a charm and pretty too! Its too bad i steped on the lcd and cracked the full faced display
gets a whoppin 9/10

Im about to swap in a pioneer that i had bought for my mom a few years ago and see if its got any improvments over the sony. Hope so. If not, its either the new Kenwood MP3 deck, or the new Clarion

I like panasonic products in general, but I've always had good luck with the higher end kenwood stuff.

My Pioneer DEH-1000 45Wx4 CD player is the only one I've had, and I really like it. The display is sort of dark yellow/light green, and there's no flashing lights or unusually shaped buttons, etc. It fits the car well, and cost about $165 3 years ago. I rarely get any skips, and it has always played all of my CD-R's just fine. I'm not familiar with the official Dana rankings, but I'll go with 9/10. It does what it's supposed to do very well.

I have a JVC Kameleon, very nice Volvo 700 series deck. The reason I like it- is because:

#1. It's Black, and matches the Interior quite nicely. It's even very boxy, and looks perfectly in-tune with the switches, etc..

#2. When you turn off the car, it folds up into itself and looks like a black panel. Very nice when you think to leave the stock tape deck in below to fool annoying car stereo theives. I like to leave a tape still in the baby to make them think I'm still jamming to my old fleetwood mac tapes or something.

All around, I like the deck. Great sound, and not 'too' many moving parts to break. But, you never know. It's only been about 1 year now.

JVC Kameleon CD Deck (http://www.electronics-pluz.com/jvccdreceiver.html) - check it out, I KNOW you can find a better deal than on this site tho. I know I did.

I've got a pioneer 6400. I've had lots of makes and I always come back to the pioneer's! I've also had good luck with Kenwoods, but I hate sony's.

I agree with Doug. I have a relatively cheap Pioneer CD player that I bought when I 1st got the car, which was around 4 or 5 years ago. I haven't done as much as clean the laser (which it says you should do every 50 hours of listening time) and, knock on wood, the thing works as good as the day that I bought it. And the CD player was around $200 I think, so it wasnt the most expensive thing in the world.

I've had 3 different pioneer decks in my 1989 740... a deh 425 made in 1995, a dehp-4100 made in 2000 and a dehp-7300 made last year. they all have relativley the same style, button layout and quality. I'd go with pioneer or kenwood for a nice, inexpensive deck. If you want a top of the line deck, go for alpine or eclipse. but be prepared to pay a premium :)
