This thread is going to give you all the information you need to convert your pre 1990 740 taillights to the newer look of the 90+ light.

Here's what you will need for this:

*90+ 740 Taillights
*Wiring and plugs from the new lights
*4 5007 5w bulbs for the tail lights
*2 7506 21w bulbs for the turn signals
*2 7506 21w bulbs for the reverse lights
*2 7506 21w bulbs for the brake lights
*2 #### bulbs for the fog lights

*10mm deep socket wrench
*Some sort of tool for cutting metal
*Grinder or file to smooth the cut metal
*Paint (for after cutting the metal)
*Wire cutters and a crimping tool
*14-16 closed end wire connectors

To start out, you need to remove the 2 10mm nuts that hold on the cover behind the light. Next, remove all the other 10mm nuts holding the light on. Unplug the wires and the light housing should come right off.

The two vertical metal pieces will need to be removed. Cut them both out, but don't cut to much off that you lose your mounting holes, and be careful of the wires behind!

After I cut them, I used an orbital grinder to knock them down a bit more, and to get a nice even edge. I filed a little bit then to get the edge even cleaner. After all that is finished, be sure to get some paint on your newly cut edges so they will not rust.

So that takes care of the prep work for the body to make the new lights fit. Now, on to the electrical portion of the job. Below is the layout of the wires and what they need to connect to. Yes, the different lights had different color wires.

Make sure both lights have a good ground before you turn them on! The old lights had a ground wired into the light itself, the new lighs have a ground wire coming out of the harness. I grounded it to the body, as well as the bunch of ground wires coming out the drivers side from the old wiring bundle.

I always ment to do this, but was too lazy. Plus I was too excited to get it finished to stop and take enough pics!

I'm afraid that's whats going to happen... Although I finally got my rear bumper back on today, and took pics every step of the way. Good to have a bumper again....

Finally got the lights on! Was a bit more confusing that I counted on (wiring), but they're working! Well, partially... No reverse and no brake on the passenger side, but that will come tomorrow when I have more time and more daylight. I wish I had my garage space back. Anyway, I've slowly been updating my first post in this thread, and will continue to do so as I get some more free time to spend inside.
