it just ran thru my head, ppl widen Corrado steelies and it looks fairly wicked.

so I've had ideas of widen Hydras, or list wheels that you think will look awsome when widen to say 8-9".

widen them to like 12" ans then stretch 195's across like the vdub people do. < shudder >

Well, first off, widening steelies is MUCH EASIER. Welding alloys is VERY hard, welding steelies is pretty easy.

Widened Hydras would look sort of deformed. You'd be adding dish to them and adding dish to Hydras would look rather messed up.....
If you want to invest in widening wheels I'd get some Polaris, they look amazing, they already have nice lip and look better with even more.

And I searched for a while but couldn't find that picture of the widened virgos on that dark red/brown 244.

if you can get some gemmeni's(where the **** do you get them!? what did they come on!?) they would be awsome with more lip.

but your car is just begging for some polaris i think those's would look best on it.

Nice centercaps...ahem...

Sorry, no need to gloat; I'll take my 17" Comets anyday over a replica wheel.

Hey now, those are on their way.

Point was - They look damn good, and they're not as inaccessible as they used to be.

excess lip on a hydra would look a bit weird. For the price of widening a hydra you could buy the replica polaris like you said, or even some volans/titans on ebay.

Gemini's are hard to come by--but the lip isnt that much greater than hydras.

Hydra= 1/4 to 3/4"

Gemini= 1 1/2" ??

I talked about widening wheels some with my machine shop that is by far the best custom machine shop I have ever worked with. Basically, widening is something you do to either A:
steelies
or B:
Alloys that have a wierd as hell bolt pattern, and it is hard to get many good style wheels to work with in the first place..
The dude showed me some custom widened drag wheels and sport wheels he made for some obscure collector dude. They were fantastically done and still prettly light, however, you are talking a complete teardown here, and maybe even changing offset or backspacing for clearence.
If you want 16" wheels (I will stay 16s because 17s are so easy to screw up on bad roads), I would look at a Borbet type E new. They look pretty good (like a mini polaris) and aren't prohiitively expensive or heavy.
Basically, you can do it, but, unless you just love hydras over all else, it is not worth the $500-1400+ is could cost you to make it refinished and looking great.
Geminis are prettier and lighter than hydras, however, they are rare as hell on some 89 740Ts and optional on older 700s and 200s. I saw a brown 244TI wearing some geminis and it looked hot, it was an 85, so maybe some late 200s got them optional.
I say persue some geminis or borbets before messing with hydras.

Ben, those polaris look fantastic in person. YOu are right though, out in the open, your 940 does sit a little higher than the average volvo in front. They all sit fairly high, but, I noticed it a little mroe in the PIC. Your hydras are doing great on my rig and will soon receive new tires, but thanks for the functional wheels in the meantime.

theres several racing shops/companies that that have blank rims ready to be custom drilled and can be had for around 1000-1500. just a thought. Probably what I will do for my next wheels (17x7.5)

god damn it buy some rims other than OEM Volvo ones!!!

YEs Polaris rims look great but doesnt anyone want to stand out around here? We drive Volvo's for christ sakes why cant we run something other than Volvo rims?

Sam, go buy some Volk TE37's or something equally as cool. Hell, one of the most loved cars here (Dougs 242) didnt have Volvo rims and I loved that.

Man, I think something must be wrong with me lately, I seem to lash out for no real reason. Sorry

ya don't see galaxies much and they do a have a good lip to start to widen.you know I was about to post up saying the same thing. Galaxies are SEX. I think I'd take them over any other 16" Volvo wheel. rwturbo had them on his 245Ti (The black one that schaff70 now has sans the wheels) and it was SEX, PURE DIRTY STICKY SEX. With extra lip on it, they'd be even hotter.

I think the quote from your wife's webpage explains the anger, and there are knock off TE37 out there, I like them but the price is not very good and the offset is too low to have adapters to be made.

I just love wide wheels, ones wish crazy lips are the shiznit, I will continue my search for unique wheels.

I don't know why anyone would think a wide Hydra would look weird, the Borbet type A (I think it's the "A") is very simular to a Hydra, just without the swept A (more a straight A), and it looks good in sizes up to like 8inch+.
A pro wheel working business can widen just about any alloy wheel, so if it's what your after, go for it.

Galaxies are pure sex. I almost like them more then polaris rims.

Get a set of BBS or MSW's & widen those.

Get a set of 3-piece BBS style and change the outer rims daily - wide, narrow, polished, satin, anodized different colors... that would freak 'em all out.

That's my favorite wheel. They come in 16x7.5 ET20 and 16x9 ET15, which is PERFECT, just the wrong bolt patterns. Luckily the covered lugs mean they could possibly be redrilled to 5x108 quite easily, and just leave the other pattern as it is (dual patterns, not overlap). I would probably start with 5x100 or 5x120.

Borbet Type A:

www.pbase.com/slow745ti

And as far as widening, it only costs 80-100 a rim to have an alloy wheel widened. I've thrown the idea around with a few people about widening 2 polaris' to 9" or 10" out back.

I love those Borbert Type A in 9" droooooooooooooooooooool, they are soooooooooo deep. But with 15ET I highly doubt they'll look normal w/out some flares.
