Just thought I'd show everyone my new family member. Picked her up from the first owner who apparently babied her good.

I guess I'll do a little intro here since I'm new. I'm one of the founders of www.wrxhackers.com and am a major Subaru enthusiast (obviously) and have always wanted a turbo brick.

Well, I got the Sunday paper at 8am (first day he advertised), called the guy, went to see it, and then agreed to buy it pending smog. He had to spend about $600 at a shop to get it to pass -- new harmonic balancer, timing advanced, new cat. It has a new a/c compressor, alternator, and lots of new stuff. Nice 'n' clean. :)

I think I'll get new plug wires, get the compression checked, get a new fuel filter, swap out to a nice thick synthetic oil and get a good boost gauge before I do anyting else. :)

honestly thats what I would do too. How does the clutch feel? I would black out the wheels and the front end chrome too!

some pics of the interior too? thanks

Nice! Judging from the license plate frame you're from Davis. It's good to see another Tbricker in that the area. (I'm in LA right now, but my hometown is Davis).

Welcome! I hope your ready to have a car that is simple to work on, very practical, and very fast for little to no money!

I'd spend some time cleaning out that engine. Its pretty dusty. I'd spend some few hours and clean it out. Makes working on a car alot nicer

But welcome to the club !

Welcome as well. Yeah there quite a community in the Davis/Sacramento/Bay Area/Sonoma County. All within maybe 2 hours of each other. Loks like you have a fairly nice specimen to start out with. you seem to be on the right track already, do all the stage zero things first before doing anything else. If you're gonna make it into a real project car, I'd say put in a 3 row metal radiator and and NPR intercooler right off the bat. Sorta get the basics all in place before you turn up the boost, and start messing around. Keep an eye out for meets and events we have. Oh and blacking out the headlight trim would really clean up the front end. It's simple, cheap, and a huge improvement in my opinion.
Oh, and Speedw240, if you noticed, the guys modifies WRX's, turbo volvo's are not fast at all compartively. We have less than 10 guy's in the 13's on these boards. WRX's are in the 13's with a boost controller and chip probably. However we get the sleeper effect for sure.

If you're gonna make it into a real project car, I'd say put in a 3 row metal radiator and and NPR intercooler right off the bat. That's interesting. In my world (WRX) the stock cooling system is good enough for 400HP or so. I'll make sure to get a new radiator. How about the water pump and fan? I also run Evan's NPG+ coolants, so that should help out. For my first go I'd like to end up in the 300-350HP range. On a 2.3L turbo car that should be fairly straight forward. My biggest issue right now is with fuel tuning and ignition management on this car. I might end up with an aftermarket standalone ECU. ;) I was impressed with the fact that this engine has an oil cooler on it.

What kind of HP are those guys running?

The WRX has the distinct advantage of AWD, requiring little modification to get 1.6sec 60ft times. :) The trap speeds aren't all that impressive, but damn they get off the line.

And street-driven (not just for the track) 13's on a WRX is ecu, exhaust (including up-pipe from manifold, which has a cat in it stock), and boost control. The stock ECU's on those things are quite impressive, but too smart for their own good, making them learn around your mods without expensive reflashing ($650+) or very smart piggyback computer systems. Hence the reason for creating a site dedicated to just ECU tuning on those things (www.wrxhackers.com).

There's multiple threads about Megasquirt on the board here. It seems to be THE way to go for programmable engine managesment systems. There guys here who know the ins and outs of it, there's a thread about it in the articles section as well. Run a search.

good luck on your quest for power, but your inital goals are *supposedly* at and beyond the ragged edge of holdability for the early b230 motors (small rods). nice car, time to pressure wash under the hood ;)

Thanks for the warning. More research is in order. :) By the way, I'll probably buy one of your megasquirt kits at some point. Nice work. I'm not familiar with the megasquirt tuning software and maps so I'll have to dig into it a bit more. I also have a water injection kit laying around I'd like to activate with the megasquirt -- but that's a topic for another thread for sure.
