Its a rear suspension frame. It provides a couple of the hard points for the rear axle.

Good idea! I bent the hell out of mine last year. Every time I'd accelerate full throttle the thing would hit the driveshaft. I should have taken pictures of it, the thing was demolished. I drove with it bent for so long, till the point where I could not accelerate normally without it hitting anymore.
