I have to disagree. Do it to a 244 or a 242 [preferably, a 242]. 244 if you want four doors, but the wagon just looks kind of "off" and the wagon looks better.

Just looks too strange as 4-doors - not to mention, weaker in the back. Keeping a roof or roll bar from the A-pillar to B-pillar and welding the back doors shut would work enough, though the back end would still be jiggly.
As for pickups ... here's a V70-P.

-- Kane ... then there's doing it Subaru Baja style too - 4-doors, open bed in back, A-to-C pillars connected.

Do the wagon and install a hot tub in the trunk for the babes.

if you do it, you will need to reinforce the body somehow.. the whole frame will flex if you remove the roof.. after awhile you will not be able to open or close the doors.. if you were going to do it, i would recommend you do it with a 242 and weld the doors shut, ideally weld some sort of reinforcements along the side of the car too.. we did this with a 244 (a long time ago) and after a few days the doors wouldnt close anymore.. the whole frame would flex when it went over big bumps - it felt like it was about to fall apart, it was pretty scary.. but we got a lot of looks and yells from people, thats for sure..it looked like this:

if youre gonna do it, find a good way to reinforce the frame!

there are lots of volvo cabs in sweden so called "kiruna-cab" (becouse thats where they first started with em in sweden...)
the easiest way of reinforcing the car is to weld the doors shut, thats what most ppl do and it works great, other way is to weld a beam to the inside of the car, that way you can still open the doors =)

Looks terrible with the slanted roof. That is an engineering nightmare for that car. :-P

if i did it. i would remove the top but put a rollcage in its place so it would be open top but still structurally sound.

Some kid at my high school did that to his beater 245. He bolted a park bench in the back and drove it around til it died. It sat on the side of the road for 3 weeks until it got towed.
