Hello all.
The VCOA is having their car show in Davis (27th: Sunday) and track day at Thunderhill (28th: Monday) at the end of April this year.

The Davis car show is free to attend and is always a good time to talk with other Volvo lovers (I believe they accept small donations to help fund the park rental).
VCOA Davis meet info: none yet, but check back. http://members.aol.com/goldengatevcoa/

You must be a VCOA member and pay a $150 per driver entry to drive at the track day, but it isn't that much (compare to other track days with SCCA & NASA) and it's well worth the trip. I believe it's free to come watch me spank everyone :booty: at the track day.
Track info: www.thunderhill.com

It would be great to meet some more Turbobricksters at this event as I would say that this has become THE premier Volvo event in the US. Better than most of the National events even (my opinion).

Just giving you all some warning that you may miss the best event of the year if you don't start planning now!

Hmmmm,
Well Doug, your car won't be that much faster than mine IF at all. I'll more than make up for any possible hp dis-advantage with corner speed. You can floor it from 40mph while I floor it from 50+mph and we will see who gets to the end of the straight first. :whip:

OK fellers......Just where in California is Thunderhill?
I am tempted to put the swaybars on my monster, lower it and bring down a car hauler so that I can take all of your cars home with me. This might just get me to get off my butt and change my rear axle ratio so that it can have longer legs too.
I just might get another talking to when I go through the turns sideways and still get fastest time by ten seconds like at Portland (PIR Volvo Sports America event) in '99. So who wants to race for titles?

I do believe John that you have more money into your brick than this 19 year can muster! oh ya, and 2 more cylinders! lol Thats alright, I'm getting happier and happier with mine everyday. Now I just have to wait for my AIC to show up (hopefully a couple weeks).

Hope to see you there! Thunderhill is more or less around the sacramento area (close enough if your coming from way up north like you are). Pat could tell you better than I.

Okay, okay, so John and his beast has me a tad bit worried (Crow don't taste that well!).

John, I'd love to see you show up and give us all a lesson in driving and what a fast car can actually do. I had visions of the RUF Yellowbird Porsche drifting around the Nurburgring as I read your post. I'm sure the rest of the Volvo crowd that gathers for this event would also love to see you and your car show up. I'll bring the video camera and even follow you around a bit to get some video of your antics. Yes, I'm sure you will get the usual tongue lashing for driving slideways.

The track is 1 hour north of Sacramento International Airport in Willows, California. Their website address is: www.thunderhill.com . They have basic directions to, a track map, and other info.

The car show in Davis, California on Sunday is 1 hour south of the racetrack if you care.

Titles? I'm not that confident, but I'd be willing to make a friendly wager that I could turn a faster lap in my beauty than you in your beast. I was thinking more along the lines of entry fee ($150). I should note that the first time we went to Thunderhill, I lapped faster than all the turbos in my enemic n/a 242dl. That was with roughly half the hp that some of the faster turbos had.

Doug, I like the sig! Looks great! Is there an orange Jet that's faster than the Blackbird? I want to use it in my sig....lol.

Best regards,
Patrick D.

You must be a VCOA member and then you will have to take it up with the organizers of this paticular event. I do think they are trying to stay strictly Volvo this year, but they have made exceptions in the past.

500hp WC Car's are not eligible for my friendly wager however. :help:

Of course when you say WC Car, I'm thinking of a 360 Modena WC Car. If you are talking about the DSM, bring it on!

My Wagon just isn't as fun as the Talon...........:)

I am going to be slapping my HKS 16G on the wagon this weekend, but I doubt it will be impressive. I am used to 2500lb. cars on the track, the 740 Wagon might take a little getting used to with an Open diff and 20 PSI.

"It is probably time to start talking about Davis and Thunderhill this year. We expect the Davis meet to be bigger than ever. We are looking into closing the street and also parking on the grass in the Davis Central Park Pavilion as options to handle the number of cars. Over 150 cars last year. We’ll need some help. If you can volunteer to help with parking, set up, clean up, or you have an idea for a food booth or something else please let me know. This is really turning into a huge thing and managing it is becoming a job for more and more people. Your help would be much appreciated. The Davis Meet will be Sunday April 27th. Volunteers eagerly sought!! Admission will be the same again this year. $5 per car and $10 if you are selling parts. No need to register, just show up.

On Monday April 28 we will again rent Thunderhill Raceway for a track day. This is a great opportunity to drive fast in a safe, closed course environment. Thunderhill is located about an hour north of Sacramento on Highway 5. Cost will be $150 per driver again this year. Your car does not have to be race prepared or modified. No racing. Instructors will be available. If you are interested in Thunderhill please contact Keith Soreng at ksoreng@neteze.com One change from last year at Thunderhill. You must be a VCOA member to participate in the track day at Thunderhill. If you are not, you can join VCOA online at www.vcoa.org it is $30 per year.

More information on the track at their website www.thunderhill.com "

OK guys.....
I'm going to thunderhill for the VCOA event.
I'll be bringing the mothership down from Seattle. For a track event we should be easily able to put a car in the Ford and trailer another car behind the Ford. Two cars behind the Ford if someone can come up with a two car trailer. Who wants to split expenses and make the trip? The Mothership is equipped with an air compressor, gas pump, ROCKIN' stereo, refrigerator, room for a barbeque and I will bring the easy up shelter as well as the usual selection of tools to go along with. It will be one helluve good time, but will involve a lot of time in the Ford. Leave Friday evening, return Tuesday. Thoughts? JohnLane.

John, Ken and I are planning on heading down as well in the pig - we should definately coordinate things. Perhaps some other PNW folk may be interested?

This sounds like it is shaping up to be a very good time.

Are we talking like a Ford Supercab (nothing short of a mack truck)?

Doubles are ok law wise in california, provided the first trailer is a 5th wheel and you do not exceed 65 feet, or else you will need a Class A lisence.

We are talking my '72 Ford F-600 boxvan with the 24' box. Think former U-Haul and you have it exactly on the money. When I mention 'Two car trailer' I am speaking of a trailer that will hold two cars. I can put one car inside the Ford. Thoughts? More guys spreads out the cost of fuel a lot better. JL.

Sorry to say that the x-1 is much slower than the sr-71. Here I go being a smartass again. The X-1 was the first plane to break the speed of sound... but thats about all it was good for. Considering regular fighters now are good for like Mach 2 at least, the SR-71 is out of it's league... (/end aircraft rant)

I'd love to go to the track but its too far for a school day... Maybe us NW guys can arrange something @ Pacific raceways or something eh?

If I skip shool moday to go the track day in addition to the meet on Sunday, does someone wanna let me ride in their car? I'm pretty damn skinny, so don't worry about extra weight :) or at least someone to show me a few tips. It shouldn't be too much of a problem as it's the last weekend of Spring Break for me.

Tuff240
01-13-2003, 04:54 PM
You are allowed to take one passenger for sure. Most organizations don't allow anyone in the back seat for safety reasons. Getting 2 people out of a car in an emergency situation is tough enough.

I usually pay for 2 driver spots so I can go out and have fun by myself in one, then calm down a bit and take people for rides in the other.

I'm not sure how the track owner/operator is going to respond to John driving a little (lot) crazy. Hell me and Kaleb (the new 911 last year) got yelled at for driving too fast (?)! I thought this was were we go to do that, sir? Oh! You mean don't JUST miss peoples rear bumper as we 4 wheel drift on to the straight at twice their speed trying to get a good run down the straight to get past more cars? Yes sir, sorry sir. We'll drive slow (?).

Oh well, it's still loads of fun and and cheaper than you can get that much track time anywhere else, even if you can only pass the slower drivers on the straight.

See ya there,

I just wanted to throw this one out to everyone.

SVS (sacramento volvo service) is installing a dyno and we had already planned a dyno day with them in march. But, I'm thinking, if we could get enough people intrested (Im sure we won't have a problem) were thinking of setting up a dyno day on the friday of Thunderhill. So it would make it Friday Dyno Day, Sat. Davis show and sunday Thunderhill!

I think this would make this a hell of an event! No prices set yet, SVS is still installing their dyno but Im sure it can be very very very reasonable!

Sounds like a sweet weekend!

Depending on what I have going that monday and tuesday for school ,I am going to try and make it. Kenny, Sacramento from where I am is about a 12 hour drive depending. I live 1.5 hours south of Portland.
So from Seattle, around 17-18 hours.

When were you, John, JB and Jordan planning on leaving to get down there and come back? I might be interested in riding down with you guys.
My 242 is no where close to being able to hit the track.

Thought about flying down also, if someone would be available to pick me up at the airport and possibly have a place to crash? Is thunderhill closed on sunday?

Would be awesome to meet everyone that attends!

I checked expedia..

From Vancouver BC

1442Km. 14hour drive, from Vancouver BC.

It gives exact directions, how many minutes you will drive a leg of the journy, how long etc etc... detailed maps... I suggest everyone checks it out.

I'm planning on heading to Vancouver on thursday night.
Then I'll make the drive to Sacramento on Friday.

Looks like I might stay in Cali for a while longer than the show, make a summer vacation out of it. See da beach etc etc....

I'd be willing to give a ride down to any body. Getting back you'd have to talk with others though. Just pitch in a bit for gas. whatever.

Doug, I'm interested in the dyno day. Give me a price... if its not too much i'm in. Will they have a WB o2 sensor to hook up too?

"1442Km. 14hour drive, from Vancouver BC."

I'm assuming you're ignoring such factors as multiple-hour border waits, traffic through major cities, etc. eh bro? ;)
It takes over 3 hours to get from here to the southern city limits of Seattle, and that's only 200km.
I think that may be a touch optimistic if you're trying to be "lawful". ;)

GTJordan
01-20-2003, 09:22 PM
Yeh true true....

I'm just going by what hte site says. It goes to the minute... has all the zone speeds and what not, then calculates.

Just try to pick a time of day the boarder isn't too bad... Head out then.

The site is very accurate from Kamloops to Terrace, almost to the minute if I do the speed limit (minus gas stops) but there are no back ups, no lines to wait in etc etc...

Stupid boarder waits

Oh, the site says it takes 2 hours and 49 mins. to Desmoines, Which is 255KM from Vancouver ;)
(close to your 3 hour experiance)

Wow Jordan that IS close!

That's cool, means it's a little closer than I thought. I was thinking 16hrs from Seattle for some reason. onlt looking at 11 hours or so from JB's- that ain't nuthin- pretty much the same as Vancouver to Mackenzie.

Dyno would be fun. Definitely would be better with a wideband though.
I'm hoping to get in a few times in february if I can ever get some time to work on the thing. Trips for work and such have heavily cut into my weekends. :(

DAVIS SWAP MEET AND CAR SHOW – Sunday April 27th.

This event will be the largest Volvo gathering in California this
year. Last year there were over 150 cars and I expect 200 this year
easily. The event will attract Volvo owners from all over the west
coast. The cost is $5 per car, $10 if you are selling parts. The
Davis Central Park Pavilion is located on 3rd and C streets in
Davis. It is right near downtown so that you can walk to
restaurants, shops etc. It is a great, shady place with a playground
for kids, etc. This has been our very best event for four years
now. The park got too crowded last year, so we will close the street
to add more parking. Don't miss this one. You don't need to be a
club member to participate, but you can join while you are there.

best classic cars in the world. They will leave SF on Sunday for
their trip around the state. They will stop by Thunderhill for lunch
with us and a parade lap or two around the track. You can check
this event at http://www.classiccars.com/stories/0007.html

Even if you do not wish to participate in track day it will be a
great event to see. We could also use some helpers at the track for

Whats the closest airport for me to fly into?

Or cheapest, if you guys know that. I'm gonna try and wrestle up a ticket... this is too good to miss.

I'll bring my DV camera and burn everyone DVDs of the event if you want :)

Also, is there a place for me to crash? I'll chip in a few bucks for your hotel room... I just can't afford one on my own.

Either Sacramento International (lol) or SFO. I could pick you up at Sac, Isaiah probably at SFO. As far as a place to crash, that I am not sure.

I guess I'd better make reservations. Is there vacancy at Hotel Doug? Maybe Pat's Truck Stop will have the accomodations I seek? :D Seriously, I doubt I'll go, but there's always hope.

A few freind's and I are staying in a hotel sun night and then heading to thunder hill, anybody's welcome to pitch in and stay with us (if you dont mind sleeping on the floor!). Hopefully we could get it down to like 10 buck's a person for 1 night. Just to let you know, were no psyco killers or anything, just a few young volvo freeks!

Theres a brand new Holiday Inn in Elk Grove. Fairly inexpensive, plus if you have problems or you need to work on your car that night you 2 miles from my shop and I'm more than willing to help anyone who needs help that night.

As far as cheap flights go, I think it's cheaper flying into Oakland than into SFO. I might be able to pick up someone at either airport if they're willing to pitch in for some of my gas money. I think JetBlue has some cheap flights, though I think they're destinations may be limited. Worthwhile to check out anyways.

By all means fly into Oakland on Southwest or Jet Blue. SFO sucks pretty hard.

Motels can be VERY cheap in Willows, near the track. Generally the hard core stays in Davis on Saturday night to get there early to set up on Sunday. It is usually a pretty good party. Sunday is a lot of work. Any help would be appreciated.

After we tear down and clean up at Davis (about 4PM or so) we head for Willows and stay there. It is about an hour and a half from Davis to Thunderhill and the track opens EARLY so it is better to stay in Willows. My post on the previous page has motel recommendations in both places. If you poke around in Willows you can get extremely cheap accomodations. Usually the party on Sunday night isn't much. The lack of a hangover on Monday morning proves to be beneficial.

Again, we need flaggers, grid helpers, etc at Thunderhill. If you are not driving, please do volunteer to help. Let me know by email if you are willing to help out at either Davis or Thunderhill. lee@vcoa.org

Lee,
I thought the hardcore guys stayed up all night Sat night to finish their cars, then drove to the show with no sleep. Then right after the show raced home to spend all night converting their car to track specs. Grab a couple hours of sleep, and drive to the track so they could pretend to be speedracer all day?

Robin, maybe you could organize something with Dana (swedespeed) and stay with me/us for the weekend. I'll be picking him up at an airport (ask him for details) and he'll be my bitch for da weekend   (j/k).

I'll be pretty busy doing the last minute thrash most likely. So it would be nice to know what's up. So include me in your plans if I'm to be the host. :beer2:

Patrick, You forgot the part about sleeping in the parking lot. There is hardcore and then there is HARDCORE. Call me up sometime. I might be on to something pretty interesting that would involve someone with a brokers license.

UMMM I hate to be such a nag, but we right now have 10 people signed up for Thunderhill... I know everyone likes to procrastinate, but you are killing me. My name is on the contract for $6000, which I have to pay in any case. This will probably work out OK but let me tell ya, if I have to pony up a substantial portion of the 6K myself, I won't do it again. So, to make an old man happy and insure future track days that would be organized by me, how about sending in the dough? Before I have a heart attack or do something even more serious like invite the Saab club.

Talk bout sucking balls!

I think that you will be getting more peoples filling in spots soon... but 10 out of 40... talk about terrible showing!

DO NOT INVITE THE SAAB CLUB. THEY GEEKS! ;)

LOL

You should make it 175 or 200 for outsiders you know... But please make sure they're COOL outsiders... no crappy cars or TOO FAST cars (read: dangerous)

I'll go see if I can rustle up some more good ol' boys to come play.

well $6000US / $150 = 40 isnt it? I'm assuming thats how he came to that $150 figure eh? I may be wrong but that'd make sense.

I see I have stumbled upon a credible threat.

Saab Club
Audi Club
Viper Club (both too fast and too dangerous, and mostly composed of guys in their 50s with gold chains who just sold mom's house! How would ya like to spend the day with those mutts?)

One check in the mail. I'll give ya till sundown on Saturday or I call the Viper boys.

We have 45 cars now signed up for Thunderhill.

We will cut of at 50 so that everyone has plenty of room to run. If you have not registered yet you have a very

short period of time to do so. Please get your money in soon. I would hate to have to tell you

no.

Okay, okay, so John and his beast has me a tad bit worried (Crow don't taste that

well!).

Well.. Worry is subjective. You'd only have to worry if the car doesn't wind

up a crumped mess for the.. what.. 7th time?

Hi guys,

I posted a thread down below about the bay area volvo caravan to the davis meet and car show. If anyone is going out to the car show and meet on april 27th from the bay area it'd be great to have you join up with the caravan. Nothing like seeing a bunch of bricks rolling into davis together. :D For those of you going to the track on monday, have fun. Maybe I can make the track event next year.

The Davis thing is supposed to start at 10.

Last year we had about 50 cars there by 9. We will be there by 7 to get the streets blocked off and stuff set

up, so if you are suffering from insomnia and feel like dragging barricades around come on by. We'll put you to

work.
