Got this grill for $7.00 at the yards. It was off a 1984 242 TI. Is it an OG flathood grill? Its grey with black plastic in the top and has some chrome trim on it. Looks factory.

I also found this on the same car. Looks like some sort of pressure switch that increases boost at some RPM. One wire hooked up to the coil and the other wire went into the interior (I couldn't snake it out so I just cut it at the firewall....I'm assuming it went to some fuse in the panel.) There's a black box that went with the set up as well.

I personally think the front end looks a million times better. Can't wait for the smaller bumpers.

I believe that the setup you found there is a Turbo+ kit. (Resident TB experts correct me if I am wrong). Good find though!!!

That is a helluva find if you got that grill for $7. They are very rare and tend to get expensive if they are in good shape. Yes that is an original flathood grill. That solenoid is used on the IBS (intercooler boost system) AKA Turbo+ (thanks Homer) equipped cars. It raises the boost 3 psi @ WOT above 3700RPM. My old car (84.5 245Ti) had this system.

Good finds :)
take care

That looks very similar to the turbo + kit that is on my car. I didn't know if they made them that early though. I don't know about the grill. -Dan.

thanks for the info. can someone tell me how to set the IBS system up (as far as wiring...I think I can figure out the vac lines). Does it raise the boost 3psi from the stock setting...or can I crank up the stock setting to like 12psi and have it raise it to 15psi?

Sean I have that on my car but I had no idea what it was! One vac hose goes to the turbo and another hose goes to the elbow before the turbo. I have no idea how to adjust it. Come by tonight and we can figure out where the wires go.

By the way nice find on the grill and hood. What else did you get at the yards? I ended up with a saab 9000 spoiler for the 244, new headrests with pads for the 242 an 86+ 240 grille and a 740 turbo grille (guess what those are for) and some misc crap.

nice score, very rare indeed!!!

When I looked at that hose system on pisco's car it looked like a cheap little bypass system. It wasnt hooked into the wastegate line so there is no way it can controll boost.

Now all it needs are some rectangular e-codes (like the 262) and you're done.........

well it does buddy...maybe pisco had it hooked up wrong when you saw it. Oh yeah...call me cause I have that relay you wanted......5 finger yo!.....

The grill is indeed (as everyone else has already confirmed) a "flatnose" grill. Nice score.

The other shi t you got should be filed in the waste basket where it belongs.
When hooked up per the factory specs, it raises boost 2.5psi at 3750 rpm and shuts off the A/C pump as well.

The A/C pump part is nice, but why would you want 2.5 lbs less boost below 3750 rpm than you can run? Might work better the other way around. For example, if your car pinged at 12.5 lbs of boost, it's usually in the upper rpm ranges. It would allow you to run 12.5 until 3750 (where it might start to ping) then drop it to 10 for the remainder of the rpms. That would give you more low end power.

I have also seen people ditch the control box and use the solenoid for an extra 2.5psi boost at the flip of a switch. I guess if you can run 12.5 (for example) and want to run 10psi for normal daily driving, then have a switch for the occasional ricer to bump it up to max boost. Makes sense sort of, but I just use my right foot to adjust boost if I'm doing daily driving type stuff.

All the extra hoses delay actuator response. In higher boost applications, you will be more prone to boost spikes.

I don't think it's fit for the trash, that's a 2-stage boost controller, like you said Patrick!

One end goes to the wastegate and the other end back to the pre-turbo hose. It doesn't do much to boost response, at least not if you have the factory intercooled setup where the WG signal comes after the intercooler. You can re-route things a bit to adjust the amount of bleed, as well as modify the valve to flow a bit more. Mine currently is set up for 6 and 10 psi, and no spiking.

Volvo installed the RPM relay to protect the engine at lower RPM where you're more likely to get pinging on cheap gas. Ditch it and replace it with a dash switch.

Correct sir. I had it bypassed but I'm throwing a tee into the wastegate lines today so it will be hooked up as before. I do want to eventually set it up so I can activate it with a fog light switch instead. I never had any spikes when I ran it with the garrett at 10psi. With my new turbo I should be spooling pretty quickly at low rpms but it is possible that the upper end power will not be as great so this is the perfect solution for me. It will be nice to have the option availiable to change it when I need it. Any ideas on how to best wire it?

The solenoid is just an on-off switch basically. I've got mine hooked to a defroster switch on the dash. 12V to the switch, from the switch to the solenoid, and the solenoid has it's own ground.
Switch off, solenoid closed, stock boost.
Switch on, solenoid gets 12V, opens, +4psi, zoom! The solenoids can get sticky, so you may want to test/lube.
