Finally got around to tearing into my old B21FT that's taking up space in my garage. Just thought I'd share with some of the folks that might not have seen the guts of a redblock. Certainly relevant to some of the "seafoam" and "pinging" threads going on.
The motor had about 260,000km on it when pulled. It would go through about a quart of oil every 300 miles on the highway, not sure if it was rings or guides, but certainly it was tired. It had been to the track a few times, lots of highway too, so no shortage of "italian tune-ups". Amazing to see the crap on the pistons, just flakes off with your finger, but no amount of air and pressure and explosions seemed to loosen it...
The combustion chambers weren't too bad:

The pistons were pretty crappy though, gotta be some pre-ignition goin on here!
2 and 3:

Now that I think back, my OLD old B21FT actually had MORE crap on the pistons, but it was more evenly distributed. Also about 50k km more. Hmm.

I bet most B21FT's are up to about 8:1 like that...

Well.. mind turned out to be fairly decent. 190k, overheated multiple times, and only had to remove 3 thou to clean up the head when my HG went.

Look about how my 90 B230FT looked when torn down...the oil burning worse than yours, was due to oil control rings that were almost flush with the pistons.
