I have heard this and cannot believe it: The 1983+ 240 bumpers are actually heavier than the safety bumper that are much larger and boxier looking. Can anyone here confirm or rebut this claim. Thanks.

Go to advanced search.

Type "bumper weight" sans quotes.

Hit enter.

Click "Bumper swapping" (3rd thread listed).

View link I posted.

And it's just that easy.

And moving to showroom.

Has anybody tried just attaching the plastic bumper covers without the metal bumpers and shock absorbers? That'll save even more weight.

I still don't see the reason you need to treat someone like trash because they can't find something

I despise the laziness. I gave the thread title. What more do you want? Should I come over and click the mouse for you? Come on....

I'm not out to ruffle any feather's but I agree with own6volvos, I hope the board doesn't turn into a pissing match, I thought the purpose of the board is to have interactive discussions and not have to read old articles... Like I said, I'm not tring to make anyone mad I just want to help keep the board a friendly place...

Own6 is being difficult for the sake of being difficult. Like Mike said, he even typed in the thread title. Maybe we need to do a big FAQ on how to do searches?
I know it annoys the piss out of a lot of the regulars when people don't search.

early plastic bumpers=lightest
late plastic bumpers=in the middle
bigass aluminum freakshows=heaviest.

Yes, it's been done - typically not for street use, but track cars like to drop all the weight out there at the ends of the car that they can.

I was being "difficult" because mike was being an ass to someone. Instead of just saying "search for it" he had to put it all out like the guy was a retard. I kinda find it offending that the board is turning more into a pissing match each day than actually furthering anything relating to our cars.

So that's one vote for the old "do a search", and no votes for showing people how to search. Saves me time, thanks!

By not doing a search first and at least saying, "I did a search and this is what i found out... but what I didn't find in the search was..." as a noob you are biting the hand that feeds you.

So stop playing the victim and look at the bigger picture.

mike and some others, just have a cocky way of writing... take it with a grain of salt
None the less, its just as important to say what your search terms are as it is to post the link you found... because then people will know how it works - its no google

What are these "early plastic bumpers" you speak of Kenny? pics?

If you don't like the question, don't respond. Its that simple. The search feature doesn't work that well anyway even under advanced.

it works pretty well, but sometimes you get screwed by using the wrong wording. like when you search for "+t" <-my biggest pet peeve

That might be a Canuck thing. Didn't you guys get aluminum freakshows until '83, then really small plastic bumpers from '83-85, and then get bigger plastic bumpers in 86?

Kirby
03-03-2005, 03:44 AM
yeah we never got the 83-85 plastic bumpers in canada which were 3mph bumpers until 1986 (we just had commados up until this point) when the 5mph bumpers were brought out which had more beefier aluminum behind the plastic and do weigh a little bit more but are essentially the same. I found a car from the USA in my local junkyard with an early set that I picked up for $40 bucks :badboy: I personally don't like the commandos myself. They are too heavy and strong. If you have ever hit things with them (as I have many times in the woods) they don't like to give as much as the later plastic ones and your front frame rails end up taking the brunt of the impact causing tweaked rails more often then not.

this place is worse than a pissing match. most of you act like your still in high school. and the search engine is pretty ****ty.

Who first coined the term "commando bumpers"? I assume the term never appeared in volvo literature.
And NO I didn't do a search and im not about to either. I want speculation damn it.
Maybe I'll mount commandos on the 89 just to scare off the neighbors.

Captain Bondo

I call them "the giant freakshow bumpers" now. "Commando" is the more PC term maybe? I don't know where it originated from though.

Works fine. Searches for words you enter, by the parameters you enter. It's up to you whether it works or not. Of course, it does take SOME effort and input by the user, and the user MIGHT have to do some reading. It doesn't spit out the answer immediately. Few search engines do...

In fact, it's better than some forum search engines I've seen. You can search user name for topics started, or just ones posted in by the user. You can select multiple forums to search at one time. You can pull only ones with X number of replies, to weed out the useless ones with no responses.

03-04-2005, 04:27 AM
yea, Vortex's search engine is dog poo compared to ours...can't get anything done there

not to mention at least here you get replies...on vortex you need to post pics, regardless of whether they are relevant or not, to even get views. then there are the thousands of ignorant members there, who don't know their tail pipe from their bum hole, and couldn't tell you which way to turn a wrench to tighten it

be thankful we have it like we do...

I thought a nice picture of the mock up I did for Mad Max's front bumper a couple weeks ago would go well here.
Wait a couple weeks for full pics. ;-)

That looks awsome. Add some nice driving lights. Maybe a winch.
