My buddy John Lunsford (wicked 600rwhp mkIII supra) put together a nice list of common turbo sizings on his website.
I took the liberty of leeching it off there and putting it into an Excel spreadsheet. So here it is, in all its glory. I boldfaced the common Volvo turbos.

Here it is in HTML, for you dorks that don't have Excel...

Oh, and I just was shown this wonderful site by Dolex...

Want to go junkyard hunting? Here's what you need. A list of all the turbos on all Volvos from the 740 series on. Enjoy!

Just wanted to say thank you to you and many others (Philip Bradley) who helped me with sizing issues. I think this belongs on the main site now. There is no controversy about the #'s and it would make a good base of mods along with the compressor efficiency maps we have. So thanks, and hopefully Dana can help put this on the main page for new commers looking for some easily compatable and well sized turbos.

Sure, I'll work on an HTML table for it. Gimme a little while, I've got class now.

How about one of you turbo pros explain what "Comp Avg" is, or means?

It is an easy way to quickly see a size comparison of the turbo. Basically the A/R of the intake and exhaust sides averaged together.

Thanks, what about the letters like in 13g, 16g, 18t which still confuse me?

AFAIK the mitsu turbo designations are just that, numbers. Bigger number, bigger turbo. Of course, I dont know what im talking about. :yikes:

Hey U all,
Has any of ya Bricksters come up with the ultimate size inducer (Compressor) & exducer (Exh turbine wheel/housing) ?
Like to see discussion on the topic of turbo sizing.

Looking at the chart it looks like the much touted 15g mod only give a performance similar to a .48 trim T3. Am I reading this wrong? If I'm not this sort of bites.. What is the Mitsu equiv of a 60 trim T3 or a 3/4 hybrid that fit's the 90 exhaust manifold.. :???:
Please let me know
Thanks

the way i under stand it is that all the 15C, 14B, 17G's are all mitsubishi turbo's, but garrett and other brands don't use that label, they just go by the trim size

I am not an expert at all, but I think that the TDO5-16G is probably somewhere near a 60 trim T3. There are alot of differently sized garrett hybrids so you would have to be a little more specific, but A TDO6-20g would give you more than you would ever probably need unless you plan to drag race only. :badboy:

Thanks for the update. I had a couple of other responses on other threads. From what I get the 15G is roughly the same size compressor as the stock Volvo garret but becuase of the better turbine design it has a wider operating range - boost comes on lower and stays through higher rpm without overheating the charge. This looks like the right combo for now - should be good for 18 to 20 psi. When I need more then I'll work on the To4 that I have.
Thanks

Hey! Where's the .42 trim T3?
Also, does anyone know about the square flange Garrett compressor with the divider in the inlet?
<edit>
My bad. I meant turbine housing.

The 15G from the 850's should be more or less the same size as a garrett T3. A 18T or 19T(not listed on the chart but slightly larger than a 18T) would be slightly smaller than a T3/4 hybrid.
poulson01:
AFAIK the turbine housing with the dividers are really what our small displacement 4-banger's want. Its actually called a "Meridianally divided pulse turbine housing" The theory is that you can arrange the exhaust headers to the turbine so that the exhaust pulses are not wasted by going up to other header tubes the wrong way at the collector. IRCC you want #1 and #3 to go into one side and #2,4 going to the other side of the turbine.
Downside is that you'd probably have to design a header to take advantage of this.
a good pic - http://www.egarrett.com/products/gt_30_45.jsp
The Upside: I don't know how much efficiencygain this translates to in the real world. I'd suspect its there but not much, otherwise we'd see a much wider adoption.

I really cant tell, because i went from stock manifold and garret T3/4 to header and holset/switzher hyprid 60/60mm wheels + new dp and exhaust system also came at the same time, so its impossile for me to say how much just the header helped. but with those changes diffrence was huge... and now again i have completly diffrent turbo.

Anyone know how different the flow chart is for the 13c as compared to the 13g?
TurboBrick940
09-02-2003, 12:33 PM
The 13C has a higher airflow at a lower pressure ratio than the 13G.
In short the 13G is optimized for somewhat higher boost pressures

I remember a while ago-maybe a year or two or three i wrote a complete turbo sizing article for T bricks--where did that go-i spent a bit of time mapping out turbos for other volvo enthuists, did it get lost or am i not looking hard enough?
The best information I have seen on turbo sizing is the discussion that has been going on in the Technical forum at Turboford.org during the last month. There are about three threads going on, covering both compressors and turbines. You may have to go several pages back to get to the compressor thread; the turbine thread is more recent. These are comments by people who have done serious modifications and tested those modifications. They have dyno charts and backpressure testing as well as seat of the pants comments.
They don't have as much tolerance for immaturity and misinformation as Turbobricks, so if you post, post respectfully and seriously consider doing some research first. Their 2.3 8V turbo motor is really quite similar to our 2.3 8V turbo motor and much of what they have been doing to their drivetrains can be done to our drivetrains.

ummm....i am just curious, on the 98 - || S/V40, it says that is comes with a GT15 Garret, just as a spark on my mind, don't the Garret GT series turbo have ball bearings? and would that mean that the S/V40 has one if it's the turbo. i do realize that this turbo is unbeliveably small, but the fact that it's a ballbearing is uber nice. :-)
here's what it said though:

You should remember the article i wrote-Philip-it was on bad bricks.com for quite a while ,with the compressor maps already mapped out/plotted for our volvos. Most of the information was from Bill WAtson and Maximum boost (book) by Corkey Bell.

im pretty sure that Garrett's Ball Bearing turbos are denoted "R" as in GT28R...at least thats what i thought it said at http://www.atpturbo.com/root/turboinfo/GTLineUp/GTLineup.htm

yeah, add all the data you want to the list and revise it.. technically all the articles/resources should be "living" documents.

no, we have too many dead links as it is IMO
