As per aaron's request, a public service bulletin to those driving 700 series cars and makeing more than 200 hp. This is largely directed at those blessed with a manual transmission, more on this later. I'll post pictures, people seem to be able to relate more to those.

200hp+ extra up top breathing:*

hydrolocking/improper tuning (any power level):

Failed fuel injectors:

M46+ Torque:(no pics) = rounded off input shaft gears

Any manual+ torque+ launch:**

Any strong manual+fixed diff+lauch:

Not pictured with the above is the twisted off flange for the driveshaft and the beat up lines and muffler after everything came unglued

Now for the breakdown on price:
Transmission swap: $800-$1200+ (for one that holds power, this is auto or manual)
Differential upgrade: $260+
bottom end: $1000+ (or just tune it better next time eh)
checking your injectors: $40+
Reinforcing the rear subframe: $50+ (havent gone through yet, the rod ends i'm going to use are $25 appiece), figure on around $100 to $150.
Time invested, figure a solid day for each of the above with proper tools the first time you do it... In terms of motor removal, I've gotten it down to 1:15 and heads have been removed in record time(think 20 minutes)

Things to keep in mind if you plan to be above average in these parts.

* Me and sam have retired ~ 8 aw's of all forms in the past year and a half
** I've to date broken 4 volvo rear ends

This thread will continue to be updated as I break more & newer things (Peter, Nick, John L feel free to chip in with your observations and exeriences)

You will never finish. Eventually, it might be easier to change the article to,

"The stuff that doesn't break."

You're forgeting all the sensors that go kaput right after you buy a 90 744ti.. or was i the only one? AMM, O2, ECT, crank position, and probably others that i don't know about... i can't wait to see what breaks once i get it running right..

That scares me... I know at least the o2 is bad on mine....

yeah it should be noted my car is special.. the first car i ever bought.. thought oooo great price for a black one black 90 744ti with hydras and winter steelies.. both sets of tires are junk, its got an engine from an 87 with a T3(which is actually in god cond.) but it was hooked up wrong so that my cbv would suck air in from the atmosphere.. yeah first turbo car at a price i should refused.. but meh, its been alot of fun and i've learnt a lot.. fixing all the sh!t i've broken..

EDIT: i forgot.. the car is kinda neat cause it has engraved windows adn other parts, and it was one of the first 90+ 740's in Canada, as its swedish made and imported in jan of 90... It had a good first adn second owner but the third(wrecked the head) and fourth(mr ghetto repair) were not so good to the car..

that happened on my 1991 744ti. A week after I bought it, the crank position and some other sensor went out.

sweet thread! dont forget about all the little maintenance things that you have to fix before other stuff breaks, like warped rotors, strut rod bushings, frayed plugwires, small annoying holes in intercooler pipes, all main power wires were corroded about 8 inches up into the harness, stuck fpr, oil drain tube, bent wheels and so forth....

Guess I'll toss in that CFIs+15-20psi = a very unhappy Main Fuel Pump.
