View Full Version : Oregon Work day BBQ May 15th Noon.
As noted in other Oregon workday thread.
When: Sunday May 15th
Where: Albany, Oregon at My house
Who: Oregon Brickers
What:
Work: We'll be working on the lame ole gravel driveway. I have tools but if you want to do some serious work come prepared. We can fab up some downpipes if someone wants to bring some 3" tubing and bends. (I have some but don't really want to part with them), My welder isn't that great just a little MIG, but it'll be there. I also have a few compressors and some random tools. (However no covered areas to work, so if it rains it'll suck)
Show There is some nice flat grassy area that you can park to just show and hang out. But it's no fun to work on grass.
Play: Pool table right inside for a tournament and PS2 also with GT4. (Independant of Oregon Weather)
BBQ: That's right we'll be roasting some meat or what-have-you... Bring what you want to contribute/eat plenty of cold storage here. I will probably have some Burgers too. (oh and there is a covered porch for hanging out if raining)
Drinks: Plenty of water here, and I'll be drinking barley pop but I don't condone drinking and driving. Again bring what you want to drink they'll be something here too though.
ANY QUESTIONS?
Let's hope it's a sunny weekend.
Sean
Oh and please post if you are wanting to come I'll get a map-quest up but I want to have an idea how many people will be around.

Looks good :)
Sounds good!
As of now I will be there. Barring any other freakin tranny problems with cars around me :-P
I better not say anything though :-P
We could even get some food coordination going (ie potluck kinda deal) so we dont have a ton of chips and no potato salad, etc.
thanks for hosting Sean.
take care
EDIT - love the wagon!

I'll bring some spud and macaroni salad, veggies (if anyone is interested) and beer.
Quite the combination :P
It would be cool to have some kind of dessert too!
What do people want to eat as a main course?
Burgers
Chicken
Steak
The first 2 are cheaper, especially if we get stuff from Costco. Depending on how many people attend we will want to get stuff from there anyways.
Sean
I have all of these
-black wagon interior (rear leather seat and cargo area stuff) - some of the cargo area stuff is beat up. U will have to check it out.
-Tailgate liscence plate lights (black)
-Grab handles
-Window squegees (for 244 or 245 style doors?)
The black door panels are tempting. I will check those out @ the meet! Doubtful I would get down there before that.

EDIT
Oh BTW, I am going to see if my friend wants to do a turbo swap on his AE86 Corolla that day, it is currently NA, and we have everything to put the turbo and MSnEDIS in it. So if anyone has some MS experience and wants to help that would be cool.

I'll try to make it, but I doubt I'll bring the wagon. I'll probably still be finishing it up. The preceeding week it'll be at the painter's place getting final buffing and touch ups. I'll spend the week before IPD applying stickers, polishing it, and getting it ready for the show.

I'll see if I can talk her into it. :)

Hmmm.... unpacking by myself or..... talking about cars all day with other Volvo enthusiasts.
Yep, looks like I'll be there. :-D
I need directions or an address so I don't get toooo lost.
Also need a list of who's bringing what and a list of what is needed for the pot-luck.
Don't think I'll be working on anything, but I'll be there. ;-)

i need rear 240 calipers....
I'm pretty sure I have a pair of used rear calipers. Do you still need them?
I need to know in the next 48 hours or so. I'm packing stuff and throwing away stuff in California for a couple days then heading back up to Portland with whatever fits in my 245. I threw away probably 3-5 sets already. I'm sure I have more.
Anybody else looking for anything?
Good time to ask since I'm going through all of my junk and tossing lots of it.
On Pat's note, I have a pair of 240 flat hoods... One will be for sale.. $45 and I'll provide some: sandpaper, primer, and a pair of sawhorses you can put it on and drive it home flat black ;)
The other will be a raffle... So you can enter your name as many times as you want...
I also found...
-M40 remote shifter assembly from p1800
-some downpipes (940 or 740)
-Some interior parts, switches, **** like that pre 81...
-Auto 740 radiator copper and metal no plastic.. (automatic)
-Front spoilers... (similar offer on help installing..)
-engines and drivetrains.. just ask..
So I have been doing some stuff around here to spif it up for the day ut still haven't figured out where to locate the PS2.. thinking back porch..
Getting gravel for the driveway this friday,.. that'll make it better...
Should be a nice time.. if you got any vinyl bring it I got a decent Record player and I'll set up a CD changer for the day or hook up someone's I-pod or such if the selection is favorable..
Lets get a headcount anyone care to count one?

I can bring some chips!
And I think I'm going to bring my wagon, so I'm going to try and do a tranny fill(nothing left in it to flush...), and maybe a brake fluid flush?(anyone have a bleeder?) I think I'll need some PB Blaster if I want to take that on... Maybe I don't want to take that on, nevermind... Lol. I might play with the dash on it, might not, might play with other little things on it, might not...

Oo, brake fluid flush! I need to do that also. Thanks for reminding me! I have a power bleeder if anyone wants to flush their brakes. Lemme know if I should bring it. What do people use for Brake Fluid? I have Castrol GT LMA in there now. Is the ATE Super Blue much better?
We would need a stable area to setup jacks and stands for doing the fluid flush probably.

Here is the head count and what everyone has said they are bringing so far.
Tye - Soda 12 packs

Me - Spud and macaroni salad, veggies and beer.

So I edited my list...
I think we need someone to bring some Hot dogs/sausage, Tomatoes for burgers, Lettuce, Salad?, paper plates, plastic forks, knives, and spoons (I can get these but don't have any now), and plastic cups; some Music (I-Pod, vinyl, or CD's); some lawn chairs wouldn't hurt...
As far as stable places to jack up cars, I will level the driveway but gravel and jackstands tend to settle so I will cut up some plywood squares to support the jackstands.
If you plan on draining and replacing fluids please bring containers to take away old fluids, there is curbside recycling here but I can't leave out more than a few gallons. and I generally don't have a lot of spare containers...
If you have ramps bring em that would be helpful, another jack couldn't hurt either, I only have 1 good one.
I'll have the compressor and the welder setup as long as it isn't raining too badly...
Should be a great time... lets get some more decisive food choices for all to bring.

Put me down tentativly I would like to come up and meet some of the local Volvo guys. I would also like to borrow the welder to finish up the exhaust and get the glasspack installed iwth side exit. also if anyone has some mounting brackets and rubbers for a intercooler install, pipes also. I would be up for buying them. I could bring the intercooler and install it too. I would love to be there for some GT4 too. Hope to see some of you guys. Joe

I have a few nice BBQ's both Charcoal not gas, I will provide condiments as mentioned above. Maybe grabbing some polish dogs and such with the hot dogs would be good.
I have most tools you could ask for, wrenches, sockets, torque wrenches, hammers, breaker bars, band saw, welder, compressors, drill (only a lil one no press), some plywood to work on under cars, trouble lights (a few although with those and the compressor and the welder we might be popping breakers), air tools, beadblaster(might be a stretch to use ALL of the above at once), hub puller, PB Blaster, some angle iron, etc..
If someone wants to bring some extra air hose I am kinda low on air hose (I don't know the name of the fittings I use post a pic of yours and I can confirm.)
So jaskstands, ramps, and an extra jack would be nice.
Oh yeah I also have a manual steering rack I don't need.

I don't know if I'll bring Food. As I am rather poor. I'll proobably bring some Morning Star Garden burgers and some buns. pepper jack cheese, and a six pack of tecate. hows that sounds?
I will be avialiable for people wantting to swap out thier L, M, and T cams for a better cam. I'll probably have gotten a couple of B cams before this get together for anyone who is interested. I will not however, adjust your valve shims. I don't have the tools for that, or the extra shims laying around. I will also help anyone out with doing Electric Fan conversions, complete with Thermo switch and in cable manual switch with fan indicator light. Got gauges? I'll also help with them too. No charge!!!!!!!!!

Sean, do you have an easy(ish) way to get fluid into an m41? I've never filled one before other than my m40 with the long shifter, which I usually just take off and pour fluid down... I might get a rear end gasket and do that as well, I don't think it has any fluid in it either... :-(

What is (how is) Super Blue? I just bled my brakes out with Valvoline full Synthetic brake fluid. Wondering what others are using. I had Castrol LMA in there before, but the car is seeing more track time nowadays.

Kyle,

I don't have any direct experience with it, but I was planning on using it in my cars back when I was younger and didn't have one and just thought about the many things I'd do to my cars when I got them... Lol. It's a high performance brake fluid that's gotten good opinions in the past, haven't read much about it lately because I think they got in trouble for having a blue fluid instead of something that matches the rest of the brake fluids, so I don't think it's actually DOT legal right now, but who's going to check...
ATE Super Blue Racing brake fluid has a dry boiling point of over 530 degrees F, far exceeding DOT 4 standards. Mixes with any other DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid. Super Blue absorbs moisture very slowly, so you don't have to change it as often as many high-performance fluids. Great for your street car that sees weekend track duty.
Check this out, it's even on a volvo website... Did you switch it with "SynPower"? Well, if so, Super Blue's better according to THIS
There's also DOT5.1 stuff out there now, not to be confused with DOT5(silicone based I think, not compatible with regular DOT3,4,5.1 fluids), that is even better than Super Blue and others. GT LMA is exceeds DOT 4 standards, so I think it compares to Super Blue, or might actually be better than Super Blue in terms of DOT standards, but isn't synthetic like Super Blue is. As far as I know. Which isn't very far. But that gives you an idea...
My friend is using Motul 600 stuff that has even higher heat capabilities than their 5.1 fluids in his Nissan 240SX. I can't wait for us to get that beast(handling/braking anyway) on the track........ Now if only his aluminum right front 300ZXTT caliper wasn't acting up, we'd REALLY have some insane braking...

im down, and i can prolly bring what ever is need. i can bring hamburger or hotdogs or something along those lines. do we need charcoal or something?
i would personally start off with some of the ate regular fluid and then move to the super blue. the super blue stuff is some of the best widely available fluid. mm, nate or kyle has my power bleeder, so if one of them shows up we should have atleast two bleeders, if not more.
i would like to do a few things, but money is super tight, so not sure if thats going to be happening.

I might be able to make it, as least partially. It's Julian's 1st. B-day on Saturday, and we're having a BBQ w/ my parents on Sat, and then Nicole's family couldn't make it until Sunday, so they will be over then. If I can sneak out at all, I will. Everyone was just over this Sunday, and I'm just about sick of in-laws in my house. I'll just have to play it by ear.

Yes I have a garage pump.. with a hose that you dip in and pull it full with fluid then pump it into the tranni, but it'll be messy, it always is....
Request:
A large bag of sawdust.. I prefer sawdust over kitty litter on the gravel driveway, if anyone can go out to their woodshop and fill a large bag with sawdust we can use this for any spills. I will empty out my dad's Tablesaw but it won't necessarily be enough.

Tools needed: Ramps, jackstands, another jack.
Sean, do you have an easy(ish) way to get fluid into an m41? I've never filled one before other than my m40 with the long shifter, which I usually just take off and pour fluid down... I might get a rear end gasket and do that as well, I don't think it has any fluid in it either... :-(
What's your taste?
I normally use a funnel and then some clear tubing to the fill hole on the M46 and have someone else pour while I watch till tranny fluid barely comes out of the fille hole. With as many people that will be around this seems like the easiest and cleanest method.

Updated Lists.
Still desired: Dessert/sugary stuff if anyone cares. Are we using paper/plastic plates, cups etc? If so, do we need to procure those also?
Work List:
Kyle - Bleed brakes, M41 fluid fill, diff fluid and gasket?
Me - Bleed brakes, B230 intake install?!
Vovo Poser - turbo swap!?
Shane - Tuning, aux gauge install
Collan - lots of minor stuff, rewiring the car!?
BlueHat42 - Exhaust, glasspack, IC install
Tools needed: Ramps, jackstands, another jack.

Oh yeah on MY work list is also TURBO my friend John's ae86, we will be performing that, all that day.
So I have a "power bleeder" also, and the tool for filling the tranni/diff.
We need someone to claim their dibs on bringing the paper plates, bowls, plastic cups, forks knives spoons..
And who's gonna bring some desert? Like some sort of jello strawberry dish would be kicka$s....
Oh and if anyone really wants to bring beer I do have a kegerator.. but I'm not gonna be able to brew a keg up in time..
lates,
Sean
PS: I don't know how tools would be best dealt with but if you bring your own please keep em seperate so I don't lose too many..

well i will know if i can come in a few days, i will also be hopefully install a b230 intake, just have to source all the parts. i can bring any type of food

I can cover the desert category with some various sweets that everyone should like. I also have a brand new power bleeder that hasn't been out of the box yet because I never knew which order to bleed the valves. Did we decide what a good brake fluid would be for a daily driver so I can go pick some up¿ I have a set of metal ramps that I can bring and some other various tools that might not be as common there like a torque wrench, the ipd fuel bung nut tool, oxygen sensor socket, etc etc. Lookin forward to another Volvo workday!
-Shane
Another thing to look for:
Ok so Luke I am hoping you bring all your black interior parts for the wagon, is the rear seat in good shape?
So I am also looking for black leather front seats.. I would prefer non volvo or 240 seats, something a bit sportier.. perhaps BMW sport seats in black leather.. anyone have any pairs of front seats for sale in black leather?
I would take a set of Volvo's for an interim interior matching timeframe..
Thanks guys!

Shane,
I can help with bleeding the brakes that day. I just finished my wagon's brakes. I also have a power bleeder if you need it, but it sounds like you're covered already.
Not sure what to recommend on a DD... any good dot 4 will work I suppose. I used Castrol LMA up till recently. I just put synthetic in the wagon... hope it works good. I've heard mixed feedback on synth.

Just use the GT LMA, it's cheap, easy to find, and works great. Nick, did you ever have any problems with it?
About supplies for the day, I'm bringing one 1lb. bag of tortilla chips, 21 plastic 16 oz. cups, and I can bring some napkins and some plastic bowls if need be...? I have a few paper plates, but they won't be able to support anything if you ask them too...

I don't know why I didn't post in this sooner... I'm definately down to come, and I can bring whatever food items are needed....
I don't think I'm going to have anything more than minor tinkering to do, so I can be someone's general bitch if they need a hand with something. I'll make sure to organize and bring all my tools by then....

I'm bringing 21 cups, but I think we'll be having cans and bottles, so more might not be needed. I've got some napkins and plastic bowls that I'll be bringing as well on top of my one bag of tortilla chipz... :-D

This morning's 10-day forecast calls for rain from this Friday on till mid-next week.
In Hawaii, we just toss a white virgin into the volcano and the rain stops.
yeah if it rains we will need lots more beer.... but we can still have a pool tournament and play PS2 and BBQ we can hang in the house and the back deck and front porch are covered do there should be plenty of hangout space.
Can't wait to see all of ya'all here.

i have a proposition for anyone who wants some help. i can come down and help someone or many out with whatever they want in return for some help down the road. i am putting in a new motor and might need some help with it, let me know what you want help with and i will be there!
Well it's looking like it's gonna be a nice day :P, but living in oregon for a significant amount of my life I don't put any faith ni the weathermen/women.
Should still be a good time... I fired up the welder and the bandsaw the other day and tacked a couple pieces onto my fan so the electric fan looks absolutely stock..
I haven't checked the status of my welding gas lately and if anyone plans on doing a lot of welding they should tell me and I can get some more gas (saturday at the latest). I have the welder and gas to weld stainless and mild steel no aluminum (no spoolgun).
Also if anyone is wanting to do a 3" DP they only take about 45 minutes, I can supply the materials for a small price... all mandrel bends..
So the BBQ will have the following food going :
Matt - Hot Dogs
Luke - Spud and macaroni salad, veggies and beer.
Tony - Tonya's BPBurgers
Nick - Food, beer?
Collan - Food?
Slobodan - Morning Star Garden burgers and some buns. pepper jack cheese, and a six pack of tecate
Kyle - Chips, plates and stuff
Shane - Food ? -Beer?
Richard & ?Wife? - spaghetti maybe
Pat - Hamburger, hot dog buns.
BlueHat42 - Possibly attending.-post if you can Bring Buns for Burgers,( nice big ones)
Andrew - Possibly attending. -post if you can Bring Buns for Burgers,( nice big ones)-
Vovo Poser - Possibly attending -post if you can Bring Buns for Burgers,( nice big ones)
Tye - Soda 12 packs
I'll get some chicken to BBQ up, and have some chips and salsa going on...
I-pods for Music, well I have mine but ya'all might hate my music taste (not terribly concerned :P)
Should be a good time..;
- Luke, can you be sure to bring as much of your black wagon interior as is available(how much do you want for it?)? we can weld your 242 door if you are still needing that done...
-I have LOTS of parts that can be sold or given away (240 spoilers, engine parts, interior misc, B20 parts, radiators, etc etc...)
-Feel free to bring any parts to swap that you think others will be interested in
One last thing.. might want to throw in some lawn chairs and if anyone has a spare quick pop-up table for food that would be cool..
Hope to see ya all here!

I'm going to have to back out of this one. Yes, I feel bad, but my priorties have shifted.
Sunday morning I'm meeting with my painter and pulling all the trim, taillights, corner turn signals, and stuff that will snag a high-speed buffer off the car. We're then touching up all the little boo-boos in the paint, and he's going to final buff the paint on Monday and Tuesday.
Good news is the rear bumper and M3 mirrors are being painted tomorrow, and if I can find a valve cover gasket somewhere, I'll be tuning the car on Matrix's dyno right behind Peter.
Seeing as how it's Friday the 13th, I'm not going to say that my car might just make the IPD Garage Sale.

Sean, by that I hope you mean putting the dizzy up seperately... It alone can get you $50-100, but you won't want to ship a whole motor... I want the motor btw, just don't know how I could get it, nor how I would install it, nor what I would do with the b20b that's in there... I don't want any of the extra stuff that's on it though, so who knows...

Dood,
Don't worry I still have 2 other 8 bolt B20's to get rid of.. the one in the smurf (which i drive daily) and another. The distributor actually sells for almost 150 with the control box rather regularly. And I put a high reserve and a clause for no dealing with shipping. Sorry dude but I really need it outta here I don't have a garage or a large area to store extra engines..
It probably won't sell then you can sell the extra parts and make the engine extra cheap for yourself if you are up for it. We'll chat tomorrow.

$180, current tags and I drove it home 3+ hours. :-P

Yeah, and I guess, with the trip permit, they won't look closely unless I'm causing mischief, so I should be good. Either way, I'm doing it! So although not too much "work" really was done, Kyle worked on his 145 and John and I worked on his ae86.
We got his ae86 ready to turbocharge and we should be done (driving) before the end of the week.
The BBQ was a success, Tony brought Tonya's BP Burgers which were awesome!! we had some Chicken that I had that we only cooked up a lil bit of because Tony and Tonya brought a lot of NICE burgers. We had Plentiful chips and salsa...
The pool tournament.. well people just played pool.. I think it was a good feature at the workday..
The PS2/GT4 well not too many participated in this.. but there was some PS2 going on..
It only rained for a couple of 15-20 minute stretches and was actully rather decent other than that.
All in all I think it was a good time! Thanks to everyone for coming and for bringing their Entrees or whatnot..
Hope everyone else had a good time also.

"anybody else looking for anything?" I wont be at the work day but I will be at the ipd meet. I was just at your website and you've had quite the collection. You have a decent, black, rear dash pad in that "junk"? Also looking for rear seatbelt covers but those are a dime a dozen. Thanks.

OVT can host it!
And I had a good, but shorter than I wanted time... GT4 left with me, so there would've been more playing, but I had to go to work. And I hardly did anything on the wagon, I basically took apart the lower dash, took out all the AC stuff, pulled out hundreds of wires that went no where(from the AC, the no longer there Djet, and the alarm)... Gotta do a tranny fluid fill sometime, and the brake fluid too...
Thanks again Sean!
And if anyone needs a host for their pictures, OVT will be it, because the pictures and movies will end up there anyway! Email me them, or send me them through AIM, whatever! :-D
