I see it on a lot of overseas 240's. a little black moulding piece that goes about a third around the exterior of the wheel well. What is it? What is it for? Why don't North American cars have them?

Its not really anything.
Some (later black ones) are stuck on with double sided tape, while some early chrome ones I've seen have been stuck on with trim clips and have holes in the outer rim of the guard.
Some of our 240GLE cars have them, although my girlfriends '85 240GLE doesnt.
I think they look pretty average - but thats just personal opinion.

They're almost impossible to find second hand in good condition though.

My 245T had that wheel well moulding when I bought it. I was told it was a dealer installed option. I tore it off (it was held on my black trim adhesive) when I painted the car. When I asked if it was still available, local Volvo folks said no....

Easy substitute: Pep Boys wheel well trim is the same radius. $8 a box.

Chrome ones!? Wait a minute...
Are we all talking about the same thing here?
I thought the original poster was talking about this bit of black at the front of BOTH REAR wheel arches:

(Image stolen from http://www.jon-erik.se/240/pictures.html and on my site so as not to steal bandwidth too)
I think everyone else is talking about the strip of black or chrome plastic that goes all the way around ALL FOUR wheel arches to reduce dings. That stuff I see all the time in junkyards, generally with a couple trashed, attached just like ashvolvo says. Actually pretty common in the US, and probably not too hard to use some generic substitute.
Anyone have any info on the pictured stuff? A partnumber perhaps? Or a pattern to send me?
I THINK it is just black vinyl like the stuff below the windows. I THINK it is basically the same deal as the clear bras for cars now, except black.
I want some.

Yes, I was thinking of the wheel well rubber moulding, that yes is available at Pep Boys (also in gaudy chrome). Don't know of the stuff in the picture near the rear wheel well. Probably shaped plastic attached with adhesive of some sort.

Quinn,

JCWhitney.com, item#ZX129357A/All Black

This is the item I recently added to my '92 740TW. When I first purchased my Brick it had chrome molding that did not look good and the chrome layer was peeling away. This black trim molding fits well and blends in perfectly on my teal colored car.

As U.N.C.L.E says, Part No. 1159 979, Stone Chip Protection, made from self adhesive PVC.

The chrome strips that go around the wheelarch that came on our 264's was held on with clips on early models then adhesive on later ones. Whichever way they are held on doesn't matter - they still accelerate the rusting of the wheelarch.
