View Full Version : Another Volvo pimping project
So here's how it goes. I have/had a stock 264GLE that was lacking in style (aside from the NASA-esque switchboard in the dash  ), and needs a lot of love to bring back into stock performance. The radio (from at latest 1978) had to go, the front door speakers were ruined, and I didn't even know there were speakers in the back until I detailed my car one day. All the apulstry was torn in the back seats, and the foam was visable. There's also no speaker cover on the right door, as all the pegs that held it in broke off.
So here's what I've done so far. I took out the stock head unit and replaced it with a Sony EXR-200 (I think, I'll edit later if it's wrong), and put a speakerbox with 2 Boston 6x9s in the back seat, getting power from the wires that used to run to the back speakers. So I had a radio that didn't randomly lose the signal, AND could play tapes. And there was some bass, now. Big upgrade, albiet ugly. The speaker box was unfinished wood my dad put together when he used it in his semi, and the Sony is just sitting in the hole where the old radio was. It was at least loud and clear (when it wasn't turned up). I got an adapter for my iPod Shuffle, and it worked pretty good.
The other day, I got my Chilton, and finally learned how to take the door panels off, so I took out the door speakers. This ment that only the Bostons were getting power, and there was a HUGE difference. Then I went to Best Buy the next day and got some 5.25"s to put in the door, but because of the depth between the door and the window, I can't roll down the window until I get some spacers or something. But now it's loud and I can feel the bass.
Today, I stopped by Les Schwab and looked at wheels. I decided on the Ultra Type 83 wheels in 16" chrome. I also wanna drop my car by 2-2.5", but I probably need to struts and stuff before I can do that (it's quite soft as it is).
And now for pictures! :D

It'll cost me $1300 to get my rims replaced with 16" Type 83s and new low-profile tires.

These are the Type 83, $145 a piece.

Good start! I can see it's coming together. Thought I'm normally not a huge fan of chrome, I think those wheels will work well with the black paint. Speaking of the paint, you might want to give it a polish, wax and wash. And make sure to use paint cleaning clay, that stuff is awesome. Good luck  IM me sometime, I live in Oly and just graduated too.

Yeah, I need a new coat of paint. I think I'll play with my car in Photoshop before I do anything to the outside, though.
So you live in Olympia? Sweet, what kind'a brick you have?

lol man why do you have powered by volvo painted on the car?
Because "Powered by Volvo, with some help by Peugeot" was too long. That, and I have yet to see that in the form of window stickers. :(

nah i ment why did you paint it on lol?
I have a bottle of window paint left over from graduation. :) It's also a joke at all the Honda kids and their "Powered by Honda" and "APC" stickers, though I am quite proud of my Swede-built engine. :D

well ill tell you what, you should wash the paint of the 264, then get some rubbing compound and buff the paint job, you can still get alot out of it. then sand therust down a lil bit and put some black gloss down then clear it . just for the time being. get you some virgos or dracos from the junk yard. and start showing those ricers how to roll eurostyle :) . i think the 264 is prety rare, you better pimp her well :)

Ehhh, what is that stuff to the right of the speaker? :barf:
http://freq.auriplane.net/files/pictures/volvo/IMAG0065.jpg
Some kind of glue. And I don't really have much to do today, maybe I'll hit a scrap yard and see what Volvo goodies they have. Oh, and do all 200s use the same wheels? I would hate to get some new wheels and not have them fit. :(

wait, $1300 for 16" rims and tires?
damn boy, what kinda crack smoking?

Nice 264. It has serious potential. :volvo:
wait, $1300 for 16" rims and tires?
damn boy, what kinda crack smoking?Exactly.
$145 x 4 16" rims = $580
$1300
- 580
-------
$ 720
That means you're going to spend $720 for four 16" tires? What the hell kind of tires are you looking at that cost $180 each, when 'decent' tires like Falken Ziex ZE-512, Hankook K106, BFG G-Force Sports, Kuhmo Ecsta 712 (or ASX), and Nitto NeoGen VR's are all under $80 each (205/45/16 at discounttiredirect.com)? Especially on a *stock* '78 264 that needs it's cancer cured and a repaint more than it does tires? Not trying to dog you, just trying to understand. :)

That price quote was for the Cobera Topline Type C30/C32 in chrome, not the Type 83s. Oops.
The Coberas are $218.21/wheel ($872.84 total), and the 205/55R-16 91V SS535 All Season Blackwall tires are $67.19/tire ($268.76 total). So wheels, lug nuts ($40), wheel spin balance ($24), and the tires come to $1344.33 with the sales tax ($108.73).
Same thing, but with the Type 83s, it drops to $1007.25. Did Volvo make 16" or 17" wheels that fit the 200, assuming I get low-profile tires?

Ah, ok. ~$220 per wheel and ~$70 per tire (+taxes, labor, etc) sounds alot more reasonable than the $145 per wheel and ~$180 per tire equation that you initially stated.
It's your ride, do with it as you wish. :) But, my money would be spent on some OE Volvo 16" Hydras ($300/set of four - average price) and those same ~$70/each tires. Decent weight, good looks, and it'll leave your with ~$600 to put towards a new paintjob. ;-)
FWIW - all RWD Volvo wheels (with the exception of some early P1800 and 544/444/PV) are all interchangeable. The wheels on your 264 now came from a 740 or 760.

*EDIT - here's a pic of my POS 242Ti, sporting 1.5" drop B&G springs, Hydras and 205/55/16 Michelins (soon to be replaced with 205/45/16 Falkens or Hankooks).

I'm really diggin' those hydra wheels. Mom's making me look in the classifieds for jobs today, so maybe tomorrow I can find a yard and look around. :)

Freq there's a yard in Olympia with 4 Dracos w/ good tires for $200! Highly recommend that route instead, that's my 2c. Those are the ones on 240_JAH's car, imo they look pretty sweet.
Well, I sorta quit my job last week, so once I find a job, and get a couple paychecks, I'll head down there. :)

thanks for the compliment on the dracos , on the car. they are pretty sweet wheels. I love how they look on my car. it was a pretty cool find. 5 dracos with tires for 75$ in perfect condition minus the center caps.
junk yard hunting is the best. plus remember that chrome wheels are heavy very heavy and the volvo doesnt need anymore weight its already a chubby car ;) lol

If I am not mistaken, the rims on your car are pretty expensive. I had four on my 740, but my sister hit a curb and bent two of them. I looked into replacing them, but they were like 300 a piece.

If anyones wants to trade my 740 wheels for their hydras, I'm cool with that. :P
