Well, the story starts out with the fact that me and my dad have been rather unsuccessful in tracking down an annoying clunk every time we hit a major bump in the 740 Turbo. We ripped the wheels off the front end today to try and play around with components but to no avail... while doing so we noticed that the brakes looked like ass:

I was also asking around the forums how to identify which brakes are which (Bendex/Girling). No one told me there would be "Girling" printed on them! Lol.

So, we head down to the local Volvo shop with the intention to order the parts... we were told they'd be in by about 3 pm (we were there at 11:00)... ten seconds after we get in the truck to leave they run out and go "they're here!", sweet... run home, open the box... mmm... shiny goodness:

Old pads were... slightly worn. Not quite as bad as I've seen around here (bare metal anyone...?) but I'd say we're still seeing a bit of an improvement. :)

Picked up a spray can of heat-resistant paint on the way home... I was disappointed there was no yellow to be found, but red is cool too. They had gold, like the colour of the car, but it kinda looked like ass. Red totally adds like 5 horsepower per wheel too.

That's looking better! :-D

Plus, when we drove it around the block, the clunking was gone!! I guess the brakes were just rattling around because they were so worn, there was too much play in the system... woohoo, I don't have to buy new bushings! Now... that used-for-ten-minutes-then-taken-off IPD swaybar set for $275 CDN is looking damn nice...

wait wait wait.

what clunking. my front end clunks any time i turn the wheel. and it never happens at the same place its just random.

what did you tighten down just the caliper?

on a side note, I have the exact same thing planned tomorrow. I have the red, clear and primer. not too mention, it should make my gunmetal virgos look cool lol

Calipers were removed completely (well, except for the brake lines) and pads were replaced. Rotors were taken off and replaced, and the wheel bearings were pulled and repacked (there was no grease inside them, just around :grrr: ). We also banged around with a rubber mallet on all the suspension bits and played with the strut, but the strut didn't move and all the suspension seemed tight so I'm 90% sure it was the brakes...

how hard was it to pull, grease and repack the wheel bearings? Exactly what did you have to do? I've never done it before, I guess on an '88 745T w/250K it'd be a good idea huh?

Well, my dad did most of the bearing work, but basically you take the whole wheel assembly apart (the way we did it ;) ), you take the grease cap off then yank out the cotter pin (you'll need a new one) and undo the bolt, the bearings and such should come out. Clean out the whole mess as best as you can, do the bearings and loose stuff with varsol. Lots of crap came out. To repack them, get a glob of the grease and put it on your hand, then press the edge of the now-clean bearing repeatedly into the grease until it startes oozing out the top. Some black crap might come out, which is good, because it is now not in the bearing! (Make sure the bearings look good too, obviously).

When you put it all together, stick lots of grease in the opening, jam the bearings back where they're supposed to go, and then do up the nut to ~40ft-lbs of torque. Then, loosen it off half a turn and tighten it up finger tight. Stick a cotter pin back through the bolt (a new one!) and bend it into place, put grease cap back on, etc etc. There's lots of brake related stuff in between for our particular operation, but that's the gist of it anyway. A repair manual should list all this (we have the Haynes one I believe, it did a decent job of explaining it, but my dad already knew it by heart from his 240, haha. He said it was virtually identical to doing the job on a 240).

Oh yeah:

Well, the Virgos are beat to HELL anyway, so I'll either get around to repairing them (hahahaha) or just get the new tires next change put on the Dracos, which has a hubcap that covers the ugly-ass lugnuts. Haha.
