i got a job an hour away. that means 2 hours per day in the volvo. that means i need a sterio upgrade. so this morning i tore into the dash. realized that the head unit has a seperate amp. and decided to instead velcro a CD player to the side of the center console and use a tape adapter.

then i put some cerwin vega 5 1/4" speakers in the back doors. had to use a 3 1/2" hole saw to make the speakers fit. no big deal.

then i put some 6 1/2 rockford speakers in the front. BTW they are NOT a drop in replacement in any way. i had to sawzall and hammer huge holes in the door. and then i had to use a razor blade to cut the hole in the door liner bigger. and then i had to grind notches in the speaker grills so the speaker can poke out the top and bottom. pretty much it was like making my own speaker holes from scratch. so cullen can kiss my ass for convincing me that the front speakers are 6 1/2. i should have just put in 5 1/4" vegas that i had and saved myself 3 hours of work and $130.00.

but in summary my volvo sounds better than my old volvo which i re-wired and put a aiwa 4X50w deck in.

so dont sell your volvo head and amp combo short. it sounds better, can go louder, can is clearer with a tape adapter than some aftermarket cd players.

also i recoment a speaker upgrade for anyone who still has stock speakers. unimaginable differance in sound.

yerp. volvo power.

ya definately got some respect from me, very nice . . . ! Funny, I got an AIWA CD Deck too . . . (got it really cheap with employee discount when I worked at a hell hole called best buy). So far hits surprisingly hard with premium stock speakers (of course mine aren't blown), well after 2 years finally just blew one of the rear speakers (it popps) so it's gettin' close for me to get some new speakers as well. A while back I sold mine that I had for the house, just recently bought some again but I've yet to buy some for the volvo, soon I hope . . . .

I think my 85 744tic's been a little modified before I got it. It's got Boston Acoustic speakers on the back deck, but I think the front ones are still stock (I haven't actually looked yet). It's been parked for a while (cracked rings) but I remember nasty popping and static while trying to change the volume and stuff. the tape deck's going out, and my Eclipse CD/mp3 player is going in. I'll probably put new speakers in the front too, good to know that sticking with 5.25" is the better choice.

I'll probably be finishing a deathboxII from decware as a sub. I started an 8" version to put in my escort wagon, but since that car is becoming basically (driving) competition-only, there's no need for a sound system in it at all, so all the goodies are coming out of it and going into the Volvo. At least, for as long as it takes me to turn my Volvo into a competition-only car..

740T....you can vacuume like nobodies business.

Look at those perfect lines.

Only reason I brought this up...I worked for Bob Lamphere in Oregon....major honda dealer and he made me vacuume his office....the lines were off....he exploded and gave me a lesson in proper vacuume technique...I almost got fired...the asshole.

Sorry to threadjack....good job on the new speakers weapon...hope you enjoy them.

hahaha, thanks, yeah I'm just particular about some things, I'm not psycotic about it but I do like the way it looks. Someone gave you a lesson on proper vacuum technique, didn't know there was even such thing, crazy, what an a** . . . .

Has anyone ever tore appart those volvo 3 way speakers that sit on the rear parcel shelf an put some proper speakers in were the factory ones were.
I have been thinking about doing this as i like the look of the stocker speakers but would like some more/better sound.
