UPDATED 12.22
First, here's a little timeline on the car
January 2003- picked up the car for $1200 from NoSloVo, 270k, bone stock, daily driver

http://www.pbase.com/brickster151/image/45286832.jpg
March 2003- master cylinder failure leads to a 20 mph collision with fellow tbricker Noah244ti after a nice run in the mountains
May 2003- after the accident, 2 new doors are sourced and I send the car off to get painted
July 2003- I threw the car on jackstands for a month, and performed the first couple of modifications. Installed iPD braided steel brake lines, iPD 25mm sways, Bilstein HD shocks/struts, iPD lowering springs. Performed some much need maitenence items [replaced stock filter with K&N, plugwires with Magnecors], swapped the GT front end+7'' Rounds on and painted the virgos anthracite.
http://www.pbase.com/brickster151/image/43681121.jpg
September 2003- Decided since the car was having cooling problems, I would not be taking it with me to Arizona. I take my 1997 Dodge Dakota instead.
February 2004- Decided I missed the car so much I had to bring it out to Arizona. Drove to CA with a new radiator, electric fan as well as a fresh turbo and swapped them on. While I was in CA for the weekend, I had an exhaust shop build a 3'' exhaust. Also installed a MBC.
http://www.pbase.com/brickster151/image/45287101/large.jpg
April 2003- Swapped to a B230F intake manifold, installed a TurboXS RFL BOV and did the T11 mod. I fixed a few fuel delivery issues [fuel pumps], and set the boost to 14 psi.
http://www.pbase.com/brickster151/image/45287149/large.jpg
June 2004- Dyno'ed the car. With Arizona temps, I had to lower boost to 9 psi for the summer heat, but I threw 100 octane in and set it to 11 psi. By this time the B21FT had about 325k on it.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/11/web/491000-491999/491451_63_full.jpg
August 2004- Recieved my Eiker Polaris replicas from the group buy. Also scored some European headlights, euro plate and euro TS's. I finally got my steering wheel adaptor for a OMP steering wheel I had had for a long time and installed that.
http://www.pbase.com/brickster151/image/34691852/large.jpg
http://www.pbase.com/brickster151/image/34947933/large.jpg
October 2004- Installed iPD Turbo Cam and adjustable gear. Thought I would be cool, so I tossed 100 octane in it, set boost to about 18-20 psi on the 60/63 T3 I was running. I paid the price and I blew the headgasket.
November 2004- Since the B21FT had more than just the HG [worn out rings], I sourced a 1995 B230FT from a 940 that had been rear ended. 90k and full maitence records.
February 2005- Finally yanked the B21FT out and put the B230FT in.

June 2005- I finally get around to actually trying to get the car running. I spent a couple days on it, but I end up running out of time and have to leave it in Arizona since I had to move back to California.

Overall, I was pretty satisfied with it. At 14 psi it ripped pretty nice once we got it tuned with the WB. But over the course of time, the cars wiring on many ends [Megasquirt, headlights, gauges] started to fail on me. It was an absolute rats nest which made it hard to fix. Also, the new clutch I had installed was giving up the ghost. Having over the many months leading up to and during the summer of 06' I had collected many parts I planned on installing on the car, including everything to swap in a T5, a Proturbo header, and other misc goodies.
At this point, with all these parts, the car having not been registered since June 05' [smog reasons], I decided it was time to make this thing into more than the street rod I had planned for it. I decided to make it my track bitch, on top of planning to run Time Attack events in Southern California. Once I build up a new engine for the car [probably after SE6, summer 07'] my plan is to get a racing license and run the car in SCCA ITE.
I began by removing the entire interior from the car [including the sunroof], removing all wiring/gauges/ems/etc, and removing all of the sound deadening tar paper. This was in preparation for seamwelding, a full IT legal rollcage as well as rewiring the car from scratch using a Painless kit.
Which brings me to now......I've got almost everything ready to go to start putting the car back together. I'm just waiting on a check from Progressive Insurance for my 98' R so I can send this car out to my homeslice John @ Evil Genius Racing for a rollcage and some other goodies. I'll keep updating the thread as more work by John and myself is completed.

when you get it running, please post how you feel about the Tial BOV, I'm stuck between HKS (I have a pipe w/flange....), Blitz, SARD, and Tial, I thought about Vortech but that thing is huge.

Sure, I do know for one you will have to swap to a different [9 psi] spring with the TiAL.

Update- I've got her all back together and so close to running. It'll be running the next time I goto Arizona!
I also installed the GT seats while I was down trying to get the car running.
king power/ground and the connector on the MS and nothing turned up. Unfortunatly, by that time me and Justin had to leave [he had to be at work tommarrow] and I had to leave the 240 behind.

A little update- I'm hoping that within the next week or two I will be able to have the car back home with me and running.
Kenny got my MS and it turns out the main chip went south. I sent him a replacement and hopefully next week Mike will be able to plug it into my car and get it running. If he gets it running, I'm hopping a plane to AZ to stay there for a few days, tune/break in the engine, and drive it back.
If Mike has to spend any more than an hour or two trying to get it running, I'm going to have the car shipped here.

Fantastic news Pat! Well, er...sorta. Glad that it was the chip in the MS that was bad, and not something in the wiring or elsewhere. That was the pisser of the whole trip down there for me. It felt like a bad episode of Monster Garage, you know? Down to the wire, got the last bits done, everything's in, checked and double checked. Go to fire it up, and...nothing. Clock strikes 12, nobody got a toolbox, no CD's, just heads hung in shame. :-(
Damn I can't wait until your car is within reasonable driving distance again. Everyone's going FWD/AWD, we need more 240T's up here!

Wow. Super-clean volvo.
And, as usual for you guys there in the States, there no rust anywhere to be seen. All the volvos i've ever had have been sick with the rust-bug. (oh, the joy of winters and salt) Even the undersides of your doors look like brand new.
Very cool car. Indeed.

So I constantly forget to update this thread.
So here's the dillio on the car right now. It does'nt have any wiring in it, no glass either. No dash. No nothing really, just the seats, engine, trans, steering wheel/column.
I've got a goal set to get it back on the road before November 11th when I am hosting a meet. Here are the measures I am taking
-Rewiring the car using a Painless 18 Circuit trunk mounted universal wiring harness kit [not in the trunk though, behind the passenger seat - I've heard the standard kit's wires are not long enough to do so]
-Mounting an Odyssey battery behind the passenger seat as well
-Custom CF dash layout with Autometer Phantom 160mph speedometer, 10k rpm tach, fuel level gauge as well as my other current gauges
-Moroso Rocker Switch Panel with pushbutton start, mounted in the lower dash pocket/CD player location [should fit pefect]
http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/71074180.jpg
-T5 transmission swap, with V-Performance 9lb flywheel, Clutchnet 100% over stock PP with carbon disc, Hurst Billet Plus short throw shifter
-Adding spark to my megasquirt
-Other small, misc things
All this is on top of the recent diet I have been giving the car.
-Shedding the tar paper volvo put all over the car
-Converting to manual windows
-Removing doorlock solenoids
-Replacing sunroof assembly with a piece of sheetmetal
-Replacing heater core assembly with a custom lighter assembly made of a trans cooler, accessory fan and a custom box w/ducting [I would just ditch it, but I've used the heater to help cool the car down if it runs a little hot]
-Ditching the GT Grille+Fogs for just a regular DL flathood grille
-A bunch of other small misc. things
Here's some pictures from today

http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n133/brickster151/IMG_3537.jpg
No glass on the doors currently, gives me an oppurtunity to find a window scraper solution [the rubber on mine was brittle and hard] and clean the overspray off the glass [from when I had the car repainted 3+ years ago] while I wait for my manual regulators

I plan on doing mostly track days for a while [probably running HPDE 3 or 4 in NASA events] and possibly some time trials/time attack events.
If my income increases, I think someday I'll look at SCCA's ITE class [what Peter Linssen is currently running his 740 in]

Pat consider this: http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?lang=-1&catalogId=10002&storeId=10001&categoryId=94305
a drop in the bucket money wise, and pretty much bolt it in, provide power and mount the switch and your done. Don't forget, its not just the extra radiator, its the DEFROSTER that is important... specially in santa cruz.

Pat doesn't have a trailer. He'd have to drive it to the track and it gets cold and foggy in S.C.
That unit looks big, but its small and would save tons of time/hassle.

Any particular reason why the main hoop isn't further forward, in line with the b-pillar? I don't suppose it matters much since that's where it would be on a 242, but I've also heard it's good to put it with the b-pillar and wedge it in.

Having the main hoop in line with the b-pillars on a 4-door would be way too far forward for my seating postion and my height. John and I talked this over last week.

I put the hoop as far forward as possible considering where Pat had his seats located, the main hoop has to have the harness bar as part of it and you need room for the seats. Even in a 242 you end up with the bar just slightly behind the b pillar if your driver is over 6' tall. I always try to wedge the bar against the body, but in many cars you cannot do that and still effect a 360 degree weld on all the tube joints (required for certification) This cage will end up with 8 mounting points (7 and 8 being in the firewall/footwell area) The rear down bars go to plates directly on top of the spring seats. This will be a very stiff cage.

I figure with the stock block I'll run low boost [15'ish psi, a little more maybe] and hopefully it'll hold till I can build up a new, stronger engine and run something more around the lines of what the turbo is capable of [25]

Cage is pretty much done. John still has to do the upper door bar for the drivers side - reason being is because with how narrow the front door already is, with how far the steering wheel comes back, and how tall I am [6'5 almost] it'll be really damn hard if not impossible to get in the car. So we're probably going to find a way to add a quick release mechanism to the wheel without moving it back any further. We'll see how it goes.

I was gonna say, after experiancing some of those shifts I'd be careful. M46 takes a few hours though, oh well.
Last time I measured my height I was 6'4. I've got lots of friends who are 6'3 and I am more than an inch taller than them.

For the work he is doing, John's pricing is extremely good. Ballpark pricing for all the work he is doing on the car [much more than the cage] is about what most shops were quoting me just for the cage itself.

Just saw the car in person... I dunno how your gonna fit in there when that upper door bar gets in... definatly gonna have to nascar climb in there. But that would be the case with any race car and your size. With that narrow door, its just like jumping into a spec miata. Looks great tho!!!
I heard your going to be up in davis monday/tuesday. I'll probably stop by and say whats up.
PS: anyone notice the P1800 racecar in the back of those pics... talk about a freakin sweet cage!!! NASCAR Door bars... anyone in the area that would love to help build up that car, give john pagel a PM. It was supposed to be built by VCOA club members (which was the novelty of the project) to run in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, but interest and man power died out. With enough help, im sure we can get you some track time in the car at one of the Volvo Track days! This race is a pretty big deal in the amature and professional racing world now. BMW Factory Diesel, Honda Performance Development, Spoon Sports... and so on are some of the groups that race this event. Dont worry, I did most of the dirty work, its in the rebuild stage now!

And yes - the 1800 is gonna be sweet. The cage in that thing is way bitchin'. As soon as I've got all my stuff done I definatly would be down to help with that car and have it ready before this year's 25 hour race.

Chopped up the dash, mounted it.

Used a series of self tapping screws, a few nuts and bolts to mount the sunroof "shell" flush with the rest of the roof, stays in quite solid too

I don't understand what those self tapping screws are for. Can you explain them more?
The whole sunroof assembly, including the tray that it sits in [for the main hoop to clear], was removed for the cage install.
I did'nt feel like using a bunch of washers to space out the bolts to make the sunroof line up correctly, so on the front part of the tray where the sunroof assembly sits [when closed] there are a few holes where the sunroof track mounts to. Since I am only using the shell from the sunroof assembly, I used the nuts and bolts to hold it in place, and the selt tapping screws thru the extra holes to adjust the shell so it sits flush with the rest of the roof. Depending on the spot where the screw is, if I tighten it, the shell moves up a little, or if I loosen it, it moves down.
It is kinda hard to explain, if I had a picture from the inside it would be much easier to grasp than what I am trying to say.

Wow....been a while since I've updated this
Just ordered the wheels for the car earlier in the week....Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2's....just found out though they have to get the castings from England and have them sent over here to be machined so they're saying it's going to be 8-10 weeks before they're in my hands. I've been patient enough so it should'nt be a big deal. I can find other things to nitpick on the car in the meantime [interior/cage painting, dash cleanup, etc]
17X8 all around, ET30. I'm going to be running Ben's extended studs with some spacers from him as well [25mm front, 32mm rear] which should make everything [including the S60R brakes] fit perfectly.
http://www.rallylights.com/Hankook/Hankook%20Images/prorace12.jpg
The tires are sitting here in my room. They are 225/45/17 Hoosiers typically ran in the Grand-Am Cup series. They are not legal for the class I am going to run the car in Time Attack with, but since the first event I plan on running is not until later in the year [Redline TA at Laguna Seca] I figure I will order another set of wheels with some DOT legal track rubber so I'll have two sets to play with depending on what I am doing [track days/time attack/etc]
I'll post detailed pictures of some of recently finished work as soon as John gets them to me [he said he'd email them last night]. For now here's a teaser shot from Davis - note the strut towers, the downpipe and that little thing peeking out in front of the rear tire.

I have a few basic questions that are probably silly, but here goes:
1. Is the cage completed? If not, are there plans to connect it to the top of the strut towers in some way other than through the existing chassis?
If yes, is some stitching of the panels under the fenders in the hood hinge area and a-pillar area allowed in ITE? Connecting all of that stuff has changed the way the chassis seems to flex on mine...
2. Did you strip the glue left from the crumbly tar sound deadening sheeit off or just paint over it? Removing the sound deadening isn't that hard, removing the glue seems to take plenty of solvent fun.
3. What are your plans for the sunroof and drainpan? The paint looks awfully nice to trash welding the sunroof shut and slicing the drain pan/tracks out of the car, but it is dead weight in a bad spot and having a solid roof is nice too. I am going though this hell in 240turbo land. Nice paint, hate the sunroof...what to do...

1. The cage is completed. IT rules I believe prohibit bars going from the firewall to the sturt towers, which is why I believe Peter added those after deciding to run his 740 in ICSCC over ITE.
2. I stripped off nearly all of the sound deadening when John had to weld in the plates for the cage. There is some left, as well as all the chassis glue crap. I painted over it - it's really not much weight and I just want the inside to be slightly presentable.
3. We cut apart the pan obviously to fit the rollcage so the sunroof is done. I took off all the associated stuff to the sunroof as well, and took the shell and used a few screws and some washers to keep it in place. I have it aligned perfect now with the rest of the roof of the car. I am going to fill up any gaps with some silicone soon and it should seal up fine.

I'm jealous, where did you get the clean rear lens?
you're only 2 years older than me. And your car is turning into a race car. You've done almost everything I wanted to plus more. That side exhaust with independent WG pipe is just about taking it to the max, I wanted to do that but is it possible on a stock turbo and WG?

I got the rear tails from eBay. They were originally on another car I owned.
2 years ago I did'nt really see this coming. I've made pretty big sacrifices to get the car to where it is but I know when I have the thing going it will be worth it in the end......and I'll finally be able to afford to move out of my parents house
I would'nt say it would be impossible, but it would be a ton of work for nothing really to run a dump tube on an internally gated turbo, and there really would not be any gain compared to say, ATP's ultimate internal WG.

No worries - I've done my homework dude, but thanks for the props.
As Towery mentioned, ITE is a regional class. The rules are very lax and SFR [San Francisco Region] ITE is pretty silly. On a typical weekend you'll commonly see Vipers, Vettes, Camaros, Firebirds, 968's, and older 911's mixing it up with the oddball S2000, Civic, 240Z, M3, EVO 8, SRT-4 or RX7.
I can't find the SFR rulebook online, but here is the Northwest Regions.

If the cup doesn't allow turbo, then it's not worth racing. It's against what turbobricks are all about.

oh its worth racing. and this year a '71 142 won the ITB championship in the DC area. i think the no turbo deal is to try to keep the cost of racing down. but i guess the rules change so much region to region. i frankly dont want to run against 911 turbos or even the 944 turbos not because im worried about power its just damn hard to get these shoeboxes to handle as well as a 911.
in the DC area you can also run E production with a 240 but the caterhams run E prod, and a 240 cant touch that handling wise.
( i think this is all good info for any of you guys looking to get into club racing with your volvo )

1. The reasons forced induction is'nt allowed in ITB is not totally because of cost. ITB is'nt a huge horsepower class. They just don't allow it to keep the competition fairly level at least in that class.
2. E-Production and ITE are two totally different classes.
What wiring kit is that? Could you provide a link? I looked on Moroso's website but didn't see a complete kit. Any information you can provide would be helpful. Thanks!

ITB is for certain cars that are classified with certain stock-based engines. The 240 Turbo is not classified for ITB (nor is any other turbo car), so therefore turbos are not allowed simply because none are classified in ITB. Adding a turbo to an ITB car would not be unlike using unapproved engine internals, valve sizes, etc.

oh i know im just throwing stuff out there b/c im baffled how different the rules and classifications change region by region. in the dc and tarheel region volvos arnt classed for ITE at all, only ITB or EP. in dc ITB is full of BMW 2002's, 3 or 4 142's and the odd alpha and V-dub.
i think its great what your doing. we need as many volvos racing as possible. im just wondering how competitive you'll be against vettes and vipers. and as allways good job and keep it on the hard stuff.

Radiator is here! Gotta get a few fittings welded to it though.
Other than that not much really - been super busy. With the onset of rainy season here I'll be getting more and more work done without being able to be distracted by skateboarding or the disc golf course. Also is good that the flathood is almost outta here.

28[L]x16[H]x3[W] all-aluminum GM radiator. Too big to be a drop in, but all you need is to mount a non-stock mo' betta intercooler underneath the core support [which is good], as well as move the oil cooler from the stock position to somewhere lower [or in front of the intercooler, which is good as well], bend/drill together some retaining brackets and piece together custom, longer hoses. I am already having to do that because the stock hose would come too close to my wastegate dump tube.
That does'nt factor in possibly getting fittings welded to an endtank if you want to run a catch can or turbo water cooling lines. Or converting to an electric fan.
Painless kit is good, but I should have ordered one with less circuits. I'll cut them out. But on a street car it's alot of stuff you need [power windows, door locks, etc]

There is alot of money I have put into the car that is no longer in it - if I added up that stuff I'd probably not be smilin' much.
A quick rundown makes me think the cost of everything so far currently on or going in the car will be around $14k. I fortunatly have avoided some costs by buying some normally expensive parts either new or slightly used secondhand at decent prices [all of my stuff for the T5 swap, header, R brakes, Sparcos, tires]. That calculation does'nt really include the paintjob the car got shortly after I bought it - something I probably should have waited on.

I like how they makes the back end look though. Than again I just put a spoiler for a dirt track modified on the car, maybe I should put the stock tails on and paint the middle section black so I can just sell this whole setup and save a whoppin' 1 lb to boot.

I'm still got some work left before the dash and engine sections are done but I have most of the wires ran now.
I got the new wheels finally [tires I have had for a while]. I'm still waiting for the lugs to come so I can mount them and start doing the brakes, but I quasi-mounted them up to answer some questions in my head. There is room for DAYS in terms of brake clearance [2 7/8 inches from the stock front caliper to the spoke]. The S60R brakes should fit perfect. I'm going to have to do some rollin'/choppin' though [fender lips].

I think when it is done I still won't reveal it before Davis.
Well, maybe unless I have a BBQ in early March again that I might plan together.
I had to clean up the garage earlier, and I came across a bottle of simple green. With plenty of time to kill, I finally decided to make the car look clean again. It got WAY dirty when it was at John's and I still have not really touched it until now aside from a few spots I cleaned up. I simple green'ed the car, lightly brushed off the dirt and filth wtih a microfiber towel. Did a more diluted coat next, wiped down dry with a clean microfiber, than a coat of hot water trying with a terry towel and a final swipe with another microfiber. Now I just need to clay bar, polish and wax it so the paint will have some protection. I forgot how sexy this bitch was.
Even though it won't help it get it on the road really, having it looking so nice will motivate me more as I get the last few things I need. Also, I want it to look clean because I am putting together a new [I have an old one that I have not touched in 3+ years] Cardomain page soon for it, as part of the requirement of entering to be considored for the Grassroots Motorsports Ultimate Track Car Challenge, which is gonna be at Buttonwillow June 8th.

What size tires? I'd be sitting on top of my tires before I lowered it down if I was running 1mm of offset............?
And, I can't wait to see it finished. I think you might want to make damn well sure that spoiler can hold up to the air pressure you're going to subject it to. What are you doing for support behind it? Kind of "boxing" it in with a lower plate that cut to fit would help a good amount, as well as actually some support behind it/along it for reinforcement. I'm sure you have something already figured out, but still.

225/45/17.
The airdam has a good amount of reinforcement behind it. I have it mounted up with fairly thick L-kinda shaped brackets bolted thru the bottom of the front bumper all the way to the sides. It'll take alot to bend the brackets and the material I used for the airdam itself should not be able to give much.

The back looks high and he hasn't driven it yet. ;-) But I did the same with 15x7 ET12 with 1" adapters. With the lips rolled flat, his would fit w/o rubbing and the axle centered. That's about the max w/o moving the fender out. But if that car makes anywhere near the amount of power it should, 8" wheels on the back just won't cut it.

The wavy look is from the brackets not being bent at a uniform angle, which I'm going to fix soon. I put all the brackets that sit along the fronts in a vice and bent them so the airdam would kinda be slightly angled back but my bend-fu was not up to snuff that evening.
A few things in regards to the rear suspension and tire fitment - I don't have it finished. I barely rolled the rear lips so the edges would not rest on the tires. After I removed the gastank the lips don't even touch the tires. This is with the car resting on stock IPD springs in the back and stock panhard/torque rods [none of which is staying on]. As soon as I finish the rest of the rear suspension I will be cutting the lips off just for insurance.
Not sure if I mentioned it, but I will be running Suburban Bilsteins [undecided on if I'll get the HD's or not], cut IPD wagon overloads [planning on no rear sway, but I do have a few of them in different sizes sitting around if I change my mind] until I can afford pimp ass trailing arms and coilover shocks from BNE.
But if that car makes anywhere near the amount of power it should, 8" wheels on the back just won't cut it.
We'll find out ;-)
I want to keep the bottom end together for a while so I'll be keeping boost at slightly conservative levels on the track - with the tires on there I think I will be fine. When I put together a new motor though, I'll probably either be changing wheels.
looking good man.

Thanks! I actually got the idea of the blanket from you - after getting the turbo mounted up I got a little scared since the exhaust housing is so close to the timing belt. So I have the blanket now and a modified upper section from an early, metal timing belt cover. I'm toying with the idea of getting the exhaust housing coated down the line [along with the header, WG dump tube and DP] as well.
I actually don't have the radiator installed in any of the pictures. It sits at about the same spot the stocker does though, aside from the fact it's uber-wider [sits between the frame rails with about 1'' to spare] and much thicker [the IC is in front of it a good amount though]
I actually mounted a GT spoiler and my 93' 850 airdam onto the car before I settled on building something of my own. I just wanted something that sat lower and would be easier to run ducts with.

As soon as I finish the rest of the rear suspension I will be cutting the lips off just for insurance.
One thing you might consider is getting a spot weld drill bit, drill all the welds on the lip, THEN hammer/roll it flat. If you come back later and want to pull the panel for wider wheels/tires, it would be nice to have the fender lip to work with (if you do the style that Rob and I did on our cars). Otherwise, cut the lip just enough to get rid of the spot welds and then hammer/roll it flat. I wouldn't cut it off completely.
...after getting the turbo mounted up I got a little scared since the exhaust housing is so close to the timing belt. So I have the blanket now and a modified upper section from an early, metal timing belt cover.
Metal is probably a good idea. Rob's car suffered a leak or blown gasket and quickly melted the plastic cover on his old B230. Luckily it didn't get to the belt (either the heat or the molten plastic), but it was a mess that could have led to a belt failure.
Gorgeous car mang! Just love it!

Got the radiator and intake pretty much in today. If I've got time tommarrow I'm going to make a splash shield for the air filter since I have the fender liner removed and the filter is inside the fenderwell [it's one of those slim mushroom looking HKS units] and make upper and lower brackets to keep the radiator in place

I've wanted to ask this for awhile... The headlight buckets you have on currently, they have vents below the lense right? Is this benificial, astheticly pleasing or even effective? I'm curious why you chose them. Dang Pat, that beast is moving right along now... I gotta do some major thinking but the orange might go up for sale this week.
There's a mention earlier in the thread as to why I chose that headlight configuration. Let's just say it involves a square piece of lexan........

Fits nicely between the buttcheeks. That sounds wrong though.
I could have gone a little lower with it but I am fine with where it is now. I am putting the fuel pump in the stock location so I needed the cell to be no further down than that since the pump will need a nice gravity feed. While it's cut out I'm not quite done with the cell yet. Still have to bolt it to the frame rails, than I am going to make a brace going across the framerails on each side of the cell to kinda shore things up but also to run straps as extra support for the cell.
Aside from mounting the cell and doing the pump I'm working on the lines too. I need to get my fuel rail modified to run an -6 braided hose to, as well as for an externally mounted Magnafuel adjustable FPR. Doing plumbing for the oiling & cooling system for the car too, and maybe I'll do the dash sometime as well finally.
The spoiler mounts on the sides are off because I painted them earlier. Gonna do the rest of the metal pieces of the spoiler tommarrow.
Oh, and I took out my Odyssey PC925 battery and mount, and sold it to my buddy who was helping me out. I'm just gonna get the smaller, lighter one and mount it behind the passenger seat like I should have in the first place.
Also, while my friend had his grinder over I did this.
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n133/brickster151/Img_0699.jpg
Chopped up the top half of a metal timing belt cover from an early B21. Only 1 of the holes lines up but that is all I should need. Once I have some sort of heat reflective coating on it, as well as a coating up the exhaust housing of the turbo I'll have lots of peace of mind about the timing belt not melting because of it's proximity to the exhaust housing

I hate to be a wuss but I am way too scared to take this thing out in broad daylight on a drive like that. It would be a kinda lame way to lose a car I have so much work into. I'd be lying if I said I will absolutely never drive it on the street though.

Awesome work man.
No real need to worry about the timing belt if you are gonna run the beanie.
That thing is awesome and will be cool to the touch even after a hard run, it keeps a lot of heat in.
I had to run one on mine cause the brake master cylinder is so close the beanie is actually touching it.
Both the beanie and the master remain cool.

Orange car is just taking up space/time right now. I still need to get it thru a ref so I can get current tags for it finally, and some of the things I have to do to get it ready would take away time/money from this car. I just wish it could magically be ready to pass thru a ref so I could have a DD again. I've been bumming rides and borrowing my parents cars [mr boy-racer AKA my dad has a modded Mazdaspeed3 now that is kinda fun :oogle:] and I'll be fixing our truck soon so I can drive it.

It's good to hear that the beanie does keep it cool, but I've looked at your manifold/header and it is a little bit further back from the timing belt than where mine sits. Since the car will be ran hard for extended amounts of time of time, I just want to make sure every step is made so that I don't avoid a potential disaster with the belt. The belt is so close to the turbo though that I had to grind off a small bit of the metal cover to make it slide behind the compressor housing.
The headlights are just lame USDOT sealed beams - I've got H4's for the car lined up though. Not sure how often they'll get used though, we'll see since I eventually would like to run enduros in the car [won't be for a long while though - if I do I'd switch to a GT journal bearing turbo for reliability sakes].

E20 is the max they go on the 1.2's for 8''. I brainstormed and decided to order ET30 because I figured with the most commonly availible spacers [25/32] I'd get the right total offsets I wanted [and to be sure I had enough room for the brakes in the front].

Cheapest way to find out compared to a wind tunnel [picturing a 240 in my head in a wind tunnel makes me laugh] would be to run one lap without it. I'm sure when the car is on the track it will behave better with it.
I like how it looks compared to most other adjustable spoilers, it should look cleaner when I have it completely done.

So I roadtested the airdam/bumper on a car that actually runs. The result - not that good. I drove to get a burrito with it on, got the car up to about 80. Checked it out when I got to the burrito place and it was fine. Than on the way home the road was clear so I got into 3-digit speeds, and when I got home the airdam was bent in 20 degrees or so.
So I have a new, lighter, more solid solution that I am working on. The old piece was a nice expirment, but it weighed a ton and obviously would'nt hold up.

Pretty much exactly what BNE said.
I needed something adjustable. It was this or a big ricer wing like most guys run. This is going to do the job I want it to do. Maybe Peter can chime in, because I remember he went from no spoiler to the same type I have on his 744. Seeing as how he still has it on his car I think it's probably doing the job he wanted it to do.
93' front bumper - already fitted it, I did'nt like how some of the angles ended up, and could not find an easy way to extend it lower to the ground without it looking *gasp* ugly.
Also, back to stuff higher on my importance list than airdams and spoilers - I have a chance to get my hands on 2 245/40/17 Hoosier Cups for the rear. Looking back on it I should not have gotten such narrow wheels for the rear [8''- I'm gonna see if they can somehow make me a set of 4 in 10'' down the road so I can have two sets of 8'' front and 10'' rear]. I know it might too wide for the rim and I realize it would kinda be a band-aid, but are there strong enough reasons not to mount them up instead?
blkaplan
02-05-2008, 06:25 PM
you can run a 245 40 on an 8, its not ideal but there is no safety reason why you can't.
8 front and 10 rear works nicely... if you are going wide,,, maybe go for 11 rear?

Pat, while it might not be as aggressive as what you're going for, I've got a decent front spoiler setup that works REALLY well and you could easily fit ducts to your front brakes.
Its simply a stock 240 spoiler with a 'splitter' that extends 90mm forward of the spoiler itself,
The tow hook cover has been removed and an identical hole cut in the opposite side (on my car this feeds the airbox). On the outer sides of these holes are aluminium end-plates that force airflow through the opening, and in the centre are two stainless steel wire stays that prevent the centre section from sagging.
You could easy remove the tow hook and use this hole to duct to the RF rotor and cut the hole in the opposite side and duct to the LF rotor.
The splitter itself is made from 2mm thick abs plastic, so its cheap, takes a beating and can easily be replaced.
You can then replace your tow hooks with something that looks decent.
I used these...
http://www.vmwerks.com/proddetail.asp?prod=towtabs
They're really nice and Im very sure that they're much closer to you than they are to me ;-)
I dont want to post pics in your thread, as its a thread for your project, but if you want I can email you with detailed pics of the front spoiler (if its of interest of course) and how I've got the tow hooks fitted.
Overall though, It looks to be coming along great.

245/40 will go on an 8". It will be pinched though. Might help in fitting it under your stock fenders though.
Peter chose a nice size, the 295/35/17. Look at height along with width. Stick with 17"...short 18" tires don't handle impacts as well.
8" is not enough for the front, in my opinion. 245-275 front, 255-295+ rear with wheels that are wide enough for the size you choose.

Lots of stuff is missin' - more switches, gauges, EMS, etc - none of which currently hooked up. I just have the neccessary wires loomed towards each part of the car.
The switches are part of a panel - 5 different toggles [efan, headlights, injector power, fuel pump, ignition] and a push button start.

i hate the things
Yup, but sometimes they're a neccessary evil.
We cant run with some clubs without them or a 'secondary bonnet restraining device'

Can you take a clearer picture of the covers? How're you attaching them and what'd you use?
Looking good mang! You are planning on coming up here and racing too, right? Are you going to be doing some novice races this year?

For the headlight covers
I went to orchard supply, brought in the headlight buckets and had them cut pieces that fit directly into the opening, but the opening is slightly concaved. For support I just drilled in small mending brackets [screwed into the headlight surround and the lexan] and adjusted them so it would kinda "pop" the lexan out a bit to add support and to make it concave with the headlight surround. I am going to add small braces down the middle to attach the two parts better - I also used some plastic-weld stuff between the lexan and the surround surface.
I threw them on the orange car for fun and had no problem at higher speeds [on a closed course....] with them bending in/deforming. I think I am going to re-do the bottom mounting tabs on the housings because I think over time they might be able to break if there is enough force pushing it back
I added tape around the edges to cover up the brackets.
If anyone is interested I'll knock out another set [but much cleaner] for the orange car and do a writeup. Simple, cheap mod that could maybe help out gas mileage a tiny bit on a DD.

Update - not going into detail, I got some very very big motivation to finish the car soon and do it really nice when I checked my email when I got home from work. Not gonna say much else because I really need to finish the car first. I'm gonna have a beer to celebrate and get to work on the gauges.
:-D

"I detailed it last night too. Clay, polish and wax - had not been waxed in nearly 4 years."
Substitute wood floor with your car and rag with a clay bar.
What?
The car is really looking good Pat.
