the orange one looks like it has my wheels :dogpile:

Hank Scorpio

the two black ones are from the t5r 850's they are vovlo's Volan wheels. The orange cars are 18's.

They are 18x7 Fittipaldi "Tubolare". Had them custom built about 5 years ago at a total cost of $4300.

That was after I repeatedly told I couldn't put 18's under my black 90 245. I switch them from car to car ( I go through a lot of cars).

My 82 245, it't got that real old school look. Probably becasuse everything is original! I thought about new wheels but I think I've fallen in love with the old school steel well and hubcap look. I needs paint but for a rust free original car with 284,000 miles, it's doing pretty damn good.

do the bags hurt performance? say speed-wise and cornering abilities?

looks pretty crazy, have video???

FlntRoc
07-08-2002, 11:55 PM
Not sure about the performance drop if any. It adds wieght to your car because of the air tank and compressor and what not. Haven't taken it for the 1/4 mile since I got it bagged. As long as you have each corner independent & not sharing air it should not hurt cornering. I'm not much into going around corners too fast though so I'm not 100% positive. Bad experience! I got it on video I just have to upload it onto my computer. I'll try and get it done real soon.

Hey, what would you guys say about a Volvo / nice cars wallpaper site? I'm working on putting one together. An even better idea might be to have it at this site possibly in the future. I have literally hundreds of nice digital pics of my 850 and other friends Volvo's. I'm kind of a hobbyist photographer with access to a nice digital camera.

Just my Thoughts

My 850 getting it's "feet" wet :)
After really hard rain, a road by my work flooded and then I thought, the reflection in the water would look really cool.

(PS: never drive through a flooded street! What you don't see is that about 25ft. to the left a buddy of mine is pushing his hydro-locked Crown Vic out of the water) :(

Hank Scorpio
07-10-2002, 02:53 AM
LOL, only good way for a crown-vic to die!

Those are great looking pictures! What kind of digital camera are you using?

arandall850
07-10-2002, 10:28 AM
You should see the originals (2048x1536 resolution and extremely sharp) the camera is just a simple Olympus C3000. I'm saving up for an Olympus E20N digital SLR camera though. (Not cheap)

Hi Tom,
To post a pic you must click on post reply at the bottom right
corner of the thread. Toward the bottom you will see attach
picture with a browse link on the right. Click on that, making
sure the pic is a jpg or some type of compatible format. Browse
to the pic on your computer and select it and it will be uploaded
and included in your post. Also Doug can help you link pics
from a site like Pbase.

Wish you well,

Tom

PS ok hopefully the pictures is there

dl242gt
05-21-2003, 06:59 PM
That worked! Nice drift! Always nice to see the oldies beat
the newbies. You know Porsche people used the new GT2
(which is rwd turbo) at Pikes Peak and ran faster than the 4wd
911 turbos that they used the year before. Although I think much
of the time 4wd advantage is put to good use. Thanks Tom!
Looks like a blast!

tom grossmann
05-21-2003, 07:46 PM
All wheel drive is a huge advantage on dirt - the only reason I stay ahead of the Sube guys is their lack of racing experaince and the fact that the try to use standard pavement techniques on dirt which just doesn't work. They try to steer down into the apex and then pick up the throttle instead of charging the corner rotating the car with the break pedal and then balancing the car with the throttle. When it comes to Rally RWD would be the last pick , AWD is best , FWD is good and RWD is just plain busy.

Tom

dl242gt
05-21-2003, 08:38 PM
I knew the driving technique is different, but that is waaaay
different. I can see why you would be so busy in a rwd car.
Still it's the good kind of challenge. I love that photo!
Thank you for sharing.

tom grossmann
05-21-2003, 11:40 PM
For the most part I steer the car with the pedals whether at rallycross or on a road course. The differance is you really have to just let the car go where it wants on dirt , fighting the car in dirt just seems to make things worse. now granted when I raced a Maita in shoowroom stock there were more times than I care to remember that I was a passenger despite having a steering wheel. Now when I ran the D-sports Racer (single seater) it required you be very precise and not slide the car around , instead a gentile drift was the order of the day. The best comparison I can give is a person I had as a student at a track day once told me this right after a ride in the rally car
" so everything you told me not to do at the drivers school you now want me to do at rallycross"
Anyway glad you enjoyed the Photo - it was in Sports Car magazine a couple of years ago , I enjoyed making the photo. RWD may not be optimum for Rally but it sure is big fun!!

Car was stock class legal , barely. B20 engine twin carb 118HP with strong mid-range. The car had no sway bars and a 4:30 rear end. The Rally cross courses here basicly have no striaghts so horspower isn't as big a factor. What makes the differance is getting the car off the corner. I cannot remember which gearbox Topi put in the car. The suspension was so sweat very compliant yet wouldn't bottom car if you caught 3 feet of air.

Here's my Volvo (and my girlfriend:) ).

17" rims, new paint, new seat covers(old ones were showing foam), dual exhaust(pointless I know but its a cool sound), window tint, Wal-mart steering wheel cover(lol), 2 10"s subs, new speakers, and an Alpine CD player. Slow as hell (stock engine) but we can change that someday...(www.converseengineering.com)

When I first got the car, the paint was all chipping off the top(roof, trunk, hood) so i took it to a local paint shop and had it repainted the same color. It's a cool color, everyone says its like brown but I think its more of a burgandy.I dunno.

dl242gt

The flathood was used on all 240 series 75-77. In 78 they only had the flathood for the 2 door and it is the look that I put on. 78-80 2dr models. Nowadays gotta look around a bit. But the parts are out there still.

Thanks, all the best,

Looking good Dave! It's funny my 91 244 is the same colour as your 242, and my 80 242 has the same flat hood...

Why don't you just quickly spray some flat black bbq paint on it... i think it would look trick, and why not.. its cheap and it will stand up to the heat....

ok good, now the white one is mine, the one right behind it in the shed on the right is my sisters, the blue one with only 2 lights is my grandpa's the one on the far left of teh pic is the newest project (it is in the worst shape of any project we have ever done, it should be fun). the one on the far right is the only 2 door we have, and i secretly have big plans for it, but for now it is a safe-haven for about 5 rad's that are under the hood (no engine). The goldish hood that is in front of the 2 door is from a 1982 GL, we bought it off a woman who was going 70km's when she hit a truck... walked away from it, i will get a pic of the rest of the front end on here to show you guys what she went through... The first cop to teh scene said to her- "if that was anything but a volvo you would probably be dead... HAHAHAHAHA so true tho...

Very nice! The car looks really clean. Is everything stock or is there mod's?
It makes me want another one. I once had a '68 144 that was far less clean, but ran great, a road demon. I had the exact same fog's in the same place but yellow, a classic look!
The dash looks fantastic, a lot better than the stock S dash. A nice touch would be to instal a clock from a late '70's 240 into the fuse panel, something I did and looked like it belonged there.
The wheels look good too. Are they the Volvo Vigra 15's or after market IPD's? I ran and the IPD 14's then some Laguna 14's and the car handled great.
Haven't seen the engine stabilizer mounted in front like that, I had the rear bolt type.
Nice car!

02-11-2004, 03:01 PM
Well... everything is stock volvo parts :)
Upgraded 4 wheel disk brakes, b20 with the E? (injection) head and cam, M41 tranny, 164 leather interior, misc volvo suspension, and volvo virgo wheels.
later glass and doors.... Thats all I can think of off the top of my head :)
I want to run some of these wheels in 17's
http://www.wheels-and-rims.com/images/ALY70221U.jpg

And swap the springs maybe from V-performance for stiffer handling and to bring down the nose for more of a rake, I also thought of swithing to ART's shockwaves :king: :D

I really want find another one to gut and go more performance oriented and let the wife drive this one.

Volv-a-Ratti Man
02-11-2004, 03:57 PM
Sounds good, a nice combo. You mean it didn't have 4 wheel discs as stock set-up? Thought they all had that (140's)
Other things that will really improve the performance: get two K&N air filters from a '84 Toyota Corolla, they fit nicely in place of the stock filters a will get you about 10 hp gain. Either tear apart the stock SU filter caps and spacers or make up some yourself. The K&N are a bit larger diameter and flow much better.
What needles do you have in the SU's? With that set-up you should be using DX or RR, not the stock SM needles. Leaner at idle is DX, full-out performance w/1200 rpm idle is the RR.
I had the Volvo R-sport progressive springs on mine as OE, along with the R-Sport DeCarbon` CO2 shocks. Better than ANY other aftermarket spring + shock combo. Makes Coni's seem like riding on peanut butter.
I had broken one spring while traveling up the Taconic Pkway in upstate NY at 90 mph with my canoe on the roof and broke it on a turn. I was surprised to find them still available through Volvo special order. I put a new set of spring and shocks all the way around for about $650. That was in '90. What do you have for a sway bar? I had stock 22 mm R-sport front and IPD rear bar.
Hey, I like the 164 seats. I had '82 240 GL leather seats and a 164 M410 OD tranny in mine. :)

Man, there is just something about those early 142 models. Such a nicely balanced and attractive design. They truly are a forgotten Volvo and that's a shame. I'm glad they aren't forgotten in our group.

That's a great custom/stock look you've got with that car. I bet per capita with our members we have the largest enthusiast group of people that have and like these cars. Happy rolling!

GLE is just the features pretty much

GLE just means you get everything if u got a GL you wouldent have powersteering elec windows etc it has nothing to do with the compression

On another note, Theresa Sellers, wife of Ted Sellers (they restored the 445) was my 6th grade science teacher when she was still in Austin. It was quite a suprise when I was going through the photo album on the TVCOA website and I saw her in it.

Ted & Theresa sponsored the last TX VCOA meet in Carrolllton, TX this spring. I've known Ted for many years and he cleaned out my garage of old Volvo parts when I moved out of Hutto in '98, some of which made it into the 445.

Volvo pushed the police-spec 850/S70 really hard in Canada. The Sarnia police force was looking at them for a while, even had a couple on test as unmarked cars. As far as I can tell, though, only some Quebec forces bought them -- like this one.
