A little history: When I was 14 I started looking at what car I wanted to buy and work on as a hobby. Originally I wanted an old Mopar (allways loved Dukes of Hazzard). My father suggested a Volvo because we were primarially a Volvo family owning mostly 240s. I did a little research on the internet & found the Vclassics website where I found pictures of 120's, 544's, 444's, 140's, and 1800's. The 1800 caught my eye. I didn't even look like a Volvo. I decided that this was the car I wanted to buy. Now where would I find one??

About a month or so after my 15th birthday I saw an ad in the newspaper that had a 1970 1800E for sale in southern Indiana for $9000. The car was WAY out of my price range but we were curious. We drove up there on a Sat. morning, talked w/ the seller, and learned a little more about the car. We learned that he also had a parts car ('71 1800) that came w/ the '70. After a little persuasion we decided to buy the cars. The '70 for my father to drive & the '71 for me to tool around w/. Over the next year I spent all my time tearing apart the '71 teaching myself along the way.

The '70 was driven a little but mostly neglected because my father didn't have the time or space to fix what it needed to make it road worthy. After showing so much interest in working on the '71 my father decided to give me the '70 for my 16th birthday. I spent the next 6th months or so rebuilding the brakes, tweaking a few things, and learning to drive a stick (taught my self :). ). I drove it for about a year when I bought my 1st car (w/ my own money) which was the 245t. I decided to give the 1800 a rest and drove the 245.

After driving the turbo I "caught the bug". I wanted more power & performance out of my 1800. Afterall, it looked like a Ferarri, shouldn't it perform like one? Doing some research I found little on the topic of vintage Volvo performance. I found a few comanies, however, that specialized in developing aftermarket parts for my car. One of these companies (Vintage Performance Developments) mentioned the development of a supercharger kit for the b20. This kit would enable the engine to make a reliable 200+ crank HP. A feat only previously accomplished by the best hardcore Volvo racers using super high CR & race gas.

The hampster wheel in my head started turning as I was visioning one of the fastest streetable Volvo's ever. An idea was born that became known as Super1800gtr. Supercharged Volvo 1800. The GTR is a little ricy thanks to everyone who puts a gtr sticker on their civic. It does come from the Nissan Skyline GTR.

Every project car has a theme, wether it's a ricy civiv or integra, or a full blown pro street muscle car. The idea for my car was a street "legal" race car. If Volvo got together with another company to develope the ultamite 1800. Similar to some special edition, limited run cars such as the Skyline 400R. My car won't be limited to a bunch of bolt on accessories, however. The idea is to make the car perform as well as it looks. I'm taking after the Challenger in the movie The Vanishing Point using similar wheels and keeping w/ the original white. As I said above... I allways liked old MOPARs.

Obviously I plan on keeping the stock lines and geometry of the car intact. I'll be using the original engine and the majority of the suspension components. The exterior will be slightly modified inorder to fit wider wheels & tires and a few things will need to be done to revert it back to the old style w/o the marker lights and the crome strip that curves up @ the door instead of going straight back. There are certain areas where the stock pieces just wont work for me. When this is the case, instead of slapping a new high performance part in there I'll either beef up the original or use something similar that's stronger. A few exceptions to this rule are the fuel, ignition, and electrical systems. For these I'll be using all brand new & modern equipment for safety & reliability. The interior will be gutted. No creature comforts for me. Strickly business but cleanly done w/ a custom dash, appropriate gauges, racing seats, 5pt harnesses, etc.

As of today 9/5/05 the car sits in our garage in Indiana. Actually the house we bought is about a mile away from the previous owner of the car. Now that I'm living @ that house & going to school @ IUS I'll have more time to work on the car. We're still in the process of moving & there's not much room. Next spring (as soon as we sell our KY house) we'll brake ground on a much needed workshop. It'll be huge and have all the tools needed to work on this project & others.

Pics & updates will follow

I thought I had more pics uploaded but I can't find them. Here's a sneak peak of what I have ahead of me:
http://groups.msn.com/MiscVolvo/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=1
You can see where the PO welded thick steel overtop of the rotting floors. He then covered this w/ FG to fill in the holes. All this did was trap water between the the floor & FG. It's not too bad but I'll need new inner & outer rockers & I'll go ahead & properly replace the floors w/ new pieces (front & rear). There are lots of misc pieces & parts that are rusted through that no one makes patch panels for. Nothing too severe but I'll have to make my own patches. I'm glad I decided to take the interior out when I did or I may have never discovered this poor restoration until it was too late. Here's a lesson to anyone who's thinking of this kind of "quick fix".

Holy sh!t man. That's more than a project, that's bringing back the dead and a whole lot more. Quite the list... I would've wanted to start with a better condition body for sure, but those're hard to come by.

Only a bullet muffler? That's going to be LOUD. But dayum on the list man, good luck, and this'll take a good bunch of money and a few years. I'll be around!

I've thought about starting w/ a better body but they're hard to come by in this area. It's a good excuse to buy new tools & teach myself how to use them. Good news is most of the body panels I need are available. Right now the body is 85% stripped of parts. All that's left is the gas tank (rusty screws!!), dash, little wiring, and windows. This weekend I get to play w/ my Henrob torch & cut the good panels off the '71.

Here's an idea I've had for the dash. Black part will be one piece rolled over (like old american hot rods) Grey part (aluminum) will be similar to the stock shape but a little bigger and would blend in w/ the rolled over part. It's not to scale but I think you get the idea:

A few more pics:
The '71 Parts car. Notice the lack of marker lights on the front fenders. I've seen other 70+ cars w/o the marker lights but I thought that was just a euro thing. These might be replacement pieces. The "skin" of the car is in suprisingly good condition. I should be able to use the rockers, passenger fender & nose section, rear wheel wells, and, trunk floor.

Most of the trim & wiring harness removed:

Here's a crappy pic!! Notice the thickness of the paint?? That's actually bondo from the factory. I didn't realise this until i was looking the '71 over. Now I don't feel as bad about reproducing this process.

I was able to get the front fenders off the '71 this weekend. Good news is I should be able to use parts of them in reconstructing the damaged areas on the '70. The rockers on the '71 were deffinatly replaced. The "new" ones are made out of galvanised steel & were riveted in place, then bondod over. I don't think I'll be using these... I was going to cut more off the car (trunk floor, rear fender wells) but have decided against. I'll either make my own patch pieces or buy repos if I can. Pics of the carnage to follow.

Removed the dash. All that's left is the gas tank (still stuck), fuel lines & a few misc. pieces. Soon I'll start taking the front crossmember apart & designing the dash.

*Update*

Front suspension is 99% done. I'm waiting on a few nuts and bolts before I can put it together. I ended up using Easwoods rust encapsulator & extreme chassis black paint. I did take the time to strip all the old gunk, grime, paint, etc. before doing this. I probably have 50hrs worth of work into the front suspension alone. Pics when it's assembled.

In the mean time I've been doing some rust exploration, seeing how bad the damage is & what I'll need to repair/replace. I found a few suprises. Looks like the rear passenger fender was hit at some point. They tried pulling out the dent but didn't get very far. In some places there's @least 1/4" thick bondo. I also found out that they made their own patch panels. Once again it's a half ass & shoddy job at best. On the front lower part of the rear fender opening, the panel curves out. Instead of recreating this curve they tack welded a flat piece and reshaped the area with..........bondo. Going around to the rear I found more........bondo. The rocker are full of........bondo. I'm hoping the damage to the top part of the fender is the worst. All of the other areas can be "easily" replaced with repair panels. I'm going to see if I can salvage the section I need from the parts car.

Few sanpshots of the previous owners idea of a restoration:
http://www.pbase.com/1800one/inbox

In light of the newfound bondo repairs I'm going to look more into what's involved in getting the bodywork done by a real restoration shop. Not giving up though. I'm going to keep at this. At the very least I'll have the majority of the undercoating removed, body stressed so it doesn't cave in when I cut out the damage. I'll also go ahead & do all the "simple" welding, filling in the little holes & start with the minimal customizing that's needed for the radiator & battery box.

Yeah. Yikes isn't quite what I said when I saw this :). I'm thinking of gathering up all the bondo scraps & giving them to the PO as a nice christmas gift. He lives down the road....

damn, that's a pretty well-thought out parts list. at least you know EXACTLY what you want to do with it, which is more than i can say about mine right now :)

this i'll argue with. after my exhauset fell off the 144 i'm only running 2" to the rear axle and a resonator, and it's not THAT loud. :-P

With two 2" cherry bombs, routed out the back, I was doing 97 db. The legal limit here in OR at the time was 94. Here's a vid clip with one cherry bomb,(http://www.ovtuners.org/gallery/klrraceday2002/115_1587_IMG) definitely a very good amount illegal: http://www.ovtuners.org/gallery/albums/klrraceday2002/115_1590_MVI.avi
