Ahoy

In between doing more important things I have been spray painting a few things with gloss enamel from a spray can. And it looks pretty good after a few coats and a few sandings.

Will this stuff stand up to temperature?

Could I use it on my valve cover? Oil filler cap? Everything except the exhaust (which I'll probably get some uber heat resistant stuff)?

It's the cheap ass $3 "export" stuff; but I figure it's enamel; so if it gets hotter it'll get harder? Or will it just bake off to dust?

I used engine enamel on my valve cover and cap and it's been fine for like over 6 months now.

I would reccomend doing a couple layers, and do be like me and spray it unevenly so that it looks funny when you get done(I have to redo an extra valve cover I did).

Also, just read the can, it will tell you what temp. it will withstand.

two words: stove paint. I sprayed the exhaust manifold, and turbine housing with the stuff and it still looks freakin awesome. your enamel should stick, if the surface was good and other little variables were in your favor.

Stove paint stayed on the compressor housing?!?!? I'm actually shocked, though not doubting you at all. I'm also curious, considering I've got a 15G going on, but it's off now, so prep and painting would be cake. What brand so I can give it a try as well? May do the mani as well.

Thanks!

As for the original post, I've used the Duplicolor Ceramic based high-heat paint with good results on a valve cover. 5 coats (waited for one to actually come out without runs, plus I was filling some imperfections with it). Never had any issues in about a year.

I know there is head resistant stuff in a variety of flavors; I'm just asking if anyone has using plain crappy cheap enamel paint with any luck; I mean the valve cover never really gets that hot compared to the exhaust.

Maybe I'll just spray a little on the exhaust and see if it dies after a while.

I am looking for some of that stove paint as well ..... I had my manifold and turbine housing ceramic coated for something like $100 ... it lasted about two months before it all flaked off. I saw someone elses car with stove paint on the same parts and it still looked like new after like 6 months.

The stuff I got was from the pellet stove, wood stove, dealer kinda place. I think it was called hy-temp and they had all kinds of colors. seems to hold up pretty well, another 5,000 miles and not a chip in sight.

On the cam cover i used normal automotive spray paint, and it worked great! had it for a couple years and there was no problem. Cam cover doesnt get quite as hot as the rest. It still prolly may be a good idea to use the enamel, but i dont think it matter too much (at least for the cam cover)

hi-temp grill/stove paint has worked fine for me.
