Renny_D
12-02-2005, 04:05 PM
I'm looking to see if we can put together a Dyno Day up in Portland on the 7th. So here's the deal.

Requirements - 8 cars or more (edit: not needed anymore as the price is confirmed no matter how many show up)
Cost - will be 50 for three pulls with a a/f graph.
Place - Torque Freaks in Portland

Dyno Type 4 wheel.

Who is interested. We would need to put this together by the end of next week to guarantee the tech and the time. So all you North Westerners who didn't get 1/4 times for the west at least we can represent with some real nos for our cars.
Peter how about real nos for your new a/w intercooled beast ;-)

Lemme know.

Thanks
Renny

EDIT:
We are booked so the more the merrier. Bring your ride and get some nos.

Count is : 9 confirmed, 3 maybes

those going:
me
Coldfusion - expressed interest please confirm
Kyle
Jonathan
Nchoy - Confirmed
Ottrod - maybe
Nathan - confirmed with friend Jimmy who owns a 91 camaro - we get to check us out against a V8.
Pat - confirmed for one possible 2.
Seth - Maybe
Richard - confirmed
Shayne - confirmed

Thanks

Got the catalog... lots of cool stuff! But nothing I can really use now.

I did order from Discount Stereo Online the PA-HON-10 iPod controller and adapter for the V70R. Evidently you switch to the disc changer and all controls for the iPod happen at the head unit through the LCD read out. Hope it works as advertised.

I'm interested, I'll either do the Opel, or do some more tuning on the 240 and see if I can beat the previuos 237 number. Either way let me know the details and I'll clear the time with my Parol officer.

Cool the deal is 50 bucks 3 pulls with a/f read out. It'll be the morning of the 7th not sure when we'll start still have to work out the details. If this pricing and timing work are you definately in? If so then with all the maybes we'll have 8. Common folks commit.. Probably sound like some one's girlfriend...lol.

That is the weakest excuse I've EVER HEARD!!! That is all the MORE excuse TO go to the dyno. So hop on it with us, so you can brag how much better MS is than LH2.4 that your car currently has. ;-) And brag about your tuning skillz and what not. Do you mean that you have nothing after the turbo or downpipe or do you mean the exhaust is stock. What else is wrong with it? Maybe with all the minds that will attend we can figure it out and get it running better. Maybe some fun with an mbc since you will have access to a/f ratios you could wring a little more out of the car. Come anyway even if you aren't going to run you just never know what may happen with pricing and available dyno time.

Sorry about your back been there and it sucks to have back injuries.

I read in another event thread that Seth just swapped in a newish turbo motor - he gonna get some numbers on it?

What about the rest of the folks that said they were interested when Nick first opened his dyno day thread - wa happened - where are they?

Gonna finalize this thing Friday so common and get a few others to come. Wiggin at this point talk to your V8 american iron powered buddies as we can't seem to pull it together with just volvo folks. Maybe them V8 fellers will give us something to shoot for and maybe we'll surprise them abit ;-)

I called Seth earlier today, and MIGHT've convinced him to come. He said he'll say for sure on Friday. I can try and bugger my friend with his 240SX to come again too. He made it to the last one, and since then we've replaced all of the ignition components and put on a huge exhaust... BUT, on the other side, it's developed some other problems... One of which is surely a clogged PCV valve, but it's SO impossible to get to! I'll ask'm.

If weather is nice and clear and roads are relatively dry, I may bring the 7... but only if the R is not ready to run. I'm sorta running out of time here... I have to put the R back together (interior) install the boost gauge and get the clear shield put on, but I leave for two weeks in Hawaii on the 23rd. So many things to do and so little time...

nah... I pretty much need to talk to Pat and get it up to the shop after work one day so I can do all the install and work on the interior. This working out in the 20-degree wind chill is a real drag. I have the clearshield installation scheduled for Jan. 3 (day after I get back). The iPod stuff should be here any day now, and I just have to get off my lazy ass and install the boost gauge and a-pillar pod, then tint the windows.

We'll be starting at 9 or 9:30 but I dont have the order the cars will be in yet. It's about 20 mins to a half hour per car depending on what fidling is done with the car between runs. I need a list from everybody - what are you bringing:

make, model, year, engine, rwd, fwd or awd, boosted or NA

That will help set up the priorities as they want to have the computer ready before we get there. Is there anyone who needs to go early or late please let me know. Please report back on what you are bringing as I need to give that to them well ahead of time.

This date is for Saturday Jan. 7 right? That's what I have scheduled (even though the thread's title says "New Year's Eve".

The car I'll dyno (provided we have enough to keep the per-car price at $50): 1998 V70R, Auto trans, turbocharged 5cyl, single exhaust (for the O2 sensor's benefit).

BTW, I'm dropping this car off at a shop in Clackamas on Jan. 3 to get a clear shield bra put on, and tint the rear window... I may need someone to take me over there that morning to pick it up... any takers?

I think you should also organize something AFTER the dyno runs are over. No point in us all just leaving and going home... maybe we should go out to a late lunch... go bowling... go to a brewpub (the under-21 crowd can order sodas)... maybe a strip club (oops... that's just for me, Tony and Pat)...

I dunno... something fun where everyone can enjoy. Doesn't have to be car-related.

Well I'm only good for the morning and very early afternoon that's why I was thinking BBQ or pizzas delivered there - they said we'd be the only ones there so the place would be sort of opened up to us. Hmm, it's not really that big, and there isn't really anywhere to sit down and eat if I remember correctly... If we were to stand up, we could stand up in the shop area or out in the parking lot, but who knows how cold/wet it's going to be... A couple of Pizzas would do the deal, for lunch or so if we were to just stand up there though, maybe while a couple more people dyno if we're still waiting on people to do so. I'm up for whatever though! Should be free all day...

Well I'm up for lunch suggestions after dyno time. With 8 cars we are tops 4 hours so that's still early enough for lunch. If it looks like we'll run long then we order in. So next question is go eat where? If we finish way early then maybe bowling or pool but then again where to go for those things. Suggestions - input ???

Lemme know what you folks think.

Thanks

Nope, you 'drive' your car.

As Kyle said, theres really nowhere to eat there. A tiny office, and then their shop.

I'm down for shooting some pool. :badboy:

There's a good bowling alley in SE Portland, right off of SE 7th on Belmont. Big parking lot, six or eight pool tables, and all the greasy fried food you want. There's another cool place over near Multnomah Village that has great sandwiches, microbrews, and shuffleboard, but only 4 pool tables (Pat, it's where we went that one time for dinner).

Jonathan... where do you live? I'm trying to make it easier on whomever is going to have to pick me up at my house and take me over to Clackamas to get my R. I live in Tualatin, with easy access to I-205 North (the easiest way to get to where my car will be).

Our official start time is 9:30. You'll come in sign a waiver of liablity pay the dough and we go. I'll be sending them the list on Wed of next week. Anyone confirming after that will be put at the end of the days runs. Again if you need to run early or run later or will be showing up late - let me know when and I'll try and arrange the schedule. It won't be in stone but if we can stick to it we can get through the runs faster and off to pool, food a beer/sodas sooner. Also if you're going to need to wrench there lemme know and bring or ask others to bring what you will need to do the job.

Would be interesting to run a car - swap cam and run it again - I'd have to check if we could run the car then pull it off and finish it's other runs later. Also what cam is this that you are swaping in? Lemme know.

The VPD header is not on yet, I can't $wing the rest of the exhaust system now, so I'm interested to see how good it is in it's current form with 4-2-1 manifold and the ol' 2.25" exhaust I had put on years ago.

Hopefully we can at least get a group shot going before you and others have to take off. So who is planning on staying for some Bowling and pool. And if you're coming do you want to play pool or bowl - I need some numbers here to see what I might reserve. Also any opinion on if it would be ok to have family and friends meet us there afterwards - this might help me extend the time I can stay out and play if wife and kids can come meet me there afterwards. Lemme know what you folks think.

And Luke... if Tony and Jamal can come all the way up there and just hang out, so can you. Besides, we're doing an after-dyno get-together. You don't need high HP to do that.

The bowling alley is being remodelled? Let's think of something up in No or NE Portland, so we won't have to drive all the way back down to the city.

Any suggestions? Anyone?

I'll do some research today and log my finds later.

As far as sweet numbers, if I get 100, that will be bad news for Volvo race fans. If I don't then I'll cheat to win. :badboy:

Also I figure I would ask what time this is all going down? And where exactly we're going.

Mr. Choy - Do you know where we are going? Do you want to meet at the shop before we go?
I have to go down and get the car ready + go to the bathroon before we head out anyway.

I know where to go, but I'm not headed up your way. Renny is picking me up at my house at 8:30 and we're going up to Clackamas to pick my R up at Elite Window Tinting (I'm having a clear shield put on and the rear window tinted). Then I'm heading up to TorqueFreaks.

TorqueFreaks/HorsepowerFreaks is easy to find. Go like you're going to IPD, but instead of turning right onto their street, keep going straight on Airport Way, past the McDonald's... maybe a couple of blocks or so, and you'll see them on the left side. Look for the sign and probably a lot of cars in the parking lot. I think the meeting time is 9am.

Do you have any suggestions for a chill get-together afterwards? I suggested the bowling alley on SE Morrison, but I understand they're closed for renovations. Pat wants to play pool (and that bowling alley had pool tables too).

You want me to swing by your place after I pick up my R? I'll be on McLaughlin (in Gladstone), near all those stupid car dealerships, just past the Dolphin. I gotta go back to I-205 anyway, so I'll just go under the bridge and stop by your house.

I hope I remember how to get there. I tell you what... I'll call you when I get to the shop. That way you'll have enough time to wake up and get ready.

I think Renny said 9am is show time. There is a list, but I don't know if that's the actual order we're going in. Since there's a mixed back of AWD, RWD and FWD, we should ask TF what order they want the cars to go in. Maybe they have a system as to how they set up the dyno.

And Pat, if you're going to crash into the back of me, make sure you hit my car hard enough to total it.

How about this for an idea?

There's a bowling alley on 82nd Blvd, just North of I-84. It's somewhat close to TF. Not sure if they have pool tables there or not.

The other place I was going to suggest was Kennedy School for lunch... but they're kinda expensive, and I'll be tempted to have a beer... or two. And their parking sucks.

I'm not sure at this point. I think they would want to charge more as part of the cost is the data entry part and the liability per car but come anyway and we'll see.

Nick knock it off you nay-sayer, do the cam if you want, just drive it in with no T-Belt covers on it and you'll cut some time off. Bring some air line and see if they will just let you plug it in. :) Or for 50.00 I'll swap it for you. Thats the cost of the dyno, correct. If you bring a pack of cloves and a 6er of DP, Pat will probably help you. Or if you bring some fried rice and a can of polish, Nick will probably help you.:-P

Oh by the way is anyone interested in actually bowling or is that the idea due to age, because there is that sports bar next to IPD.

It will be around noon on a Sat. and that's open season for cocktails around these parts.

Hahaha, nice one.

There are going to be some underage peoples there, so yeah, that's probably the main reason for bowling... Nick, I'm up for the bowling, lots of bowling places usually have a pool table or two, so maybe we'll get lucky at this one. Is there a McMenimans(sp?) somewhere around there? Quick, general rundown of the event's results...

Pat put down some respectable stuff for a stock motor, and Shayne put down some decent numbers as well for an NA motor. Here's what I remember off the top of my head, not exact numbers, but we'll get the picture of the whiteboard with everyone's stuff on it up soon.

-Pat in his "ITB" car: 100whp, 130wtrq, m46
-Ole in his Opel put down 88whp and somewhere around 100wtrq, with it going WAY lean up top, probably costing him somewhere around 12 whp ;), 4spd
-Jonathon in his 242Ti VX cam had some lean, then rich issues, causing him to only pull 171whp and something wtrq. I wouldn't be suprised if he made at least 15 more whp after he gets kjet figured out, and then who knows, maybe 25 more when he gets something respectable cam wise in there. m46
-Shayne in his V-Performance 2175 b20 122 pulled 114?whp and 119wtrq, (needs different needles in his SUs... And a header to make the VP SP conversion complete. The Mikunis should help add another 10+% on the same setup... m41
-Me in my 244 with opened airbox, removed rear AMM screen, V15 cam and stupid power sapping autotragic AW70 did only 94whp and 106wtrq, had a f'n perfect A/F ratio though. By far the best of the day, lol, doesn't mean much though with some of the worst numbers!
-RennyD did somewhere around 184? or so, with much time/trouble spent trying to get a good pull with his slipping autotragic and what not. AW71
-Late 80s, early 90s Z28 Camaro, 224whp, 349wtrq.
-70ish Merc. Cougar, somewhere around 240whp and 320?wtrq
-Some 854T that we don't know did something like 170whp and whatever trq
-Nathan in his pretty much stock 745ti with 320,000? miles on the original tranny and bottom end did 140whp and 170ish wtrq. m46
-Matt in his 740ti did a couple 130ish whp runs, then upped the boost to get rid of how RICH he was running up top and put down 160whp and 214wtrq. M46?
-? some other random people...

Guess that will have to be for another dyno day.

Thanks guys.

The ONLY reason I didn't want to post the numbers from the V70R is that they were WAY OFF. The dyno couldn't get a good spark reading, and the car kept wanting to downshift, no matter what I did to keep it from doing so. If shifted into 3, or L, the car started off in Winter Mode, and therefore didn't develop the kind of boost it needed. I have a feeling I need to bypass something (pull a fuse or something) to keep it in Sport Mode, but also stop it from downshifting. I may schedule a dyno day at Matrix sometime soon to get a baseline, and post those numbers.

Chris, my "other wagon" is an entirely different animal...

I just got back from work, and don't have time to do anything right now, but I'm planning on making a post in the showroom with all the sheets(minus Nick Choy's), and the peoples names as well as usernames(if they have one). In that thread it'd be cool if each of you could list your setup, and thoughts on the run, and I can edit it into the first post.

So, if you'd like, go ahead and start listing out your setups in this thread? :-D

the turbo inspired VX....not.

Yeah I ran with the VX cam. Soon I will have a V in and will post those sheets as well.

I was also running super rich...so that wasnt helping me out.
That was at 11 lbs of boost
Ahh, so that AF graph was accurate, well then, can't really blame the cam, yet. How are you running so rich? have you modded the k-jet or do you have your base mix set quite rich? If you could maintain a better AFR to redline you'd see that torque hold out much better. It trails off right along with your AFRs...

We're setting up a dyno day for May here, can't wait! We'll have to start an E vs W dyno-rama!

honestly i don't know how accurate that afr graph is. My CO is set ok, and I have shimmed the fuel distributor. The first few runs were with Terminal 11 connected. The last run I disconnected it, and still ran pretty rich...though I could not turn the boost up higher due to pinging.

That would definitely be way cool, to start another E Vs. W.

Anyone else get their raw data to show torque on the winjet software?

once I downloaded winjet and uploaded my raw data I am getting seeing my HP numbers significantly higher....as in my HP was at 250hp

my files imported having HP on the y axis and speed (mph) on the x axis

things seem awfully messed up

I guess pat already did that, with the winpep raw data for each of our runs as well. I missed it the first time.

Now we just need to get the setups listed...

Here's what I have so far, let me know what's incorrect, or what's missing. Thanks!

Shayne(RadioFlyer): 1966 122, rebuilt b20, bored to 2170(iirc), V-Performance head, cam, dual SU HS6 on early alloy manifold, 2.25 exhaust, injected b20 4-2-1 manifold, forged pistons, lower end based on Unitech stuff... other stuff...?

Kyle(KLR142): 1991 244, b230F with airbox cut out in front, stock filter, removed rear AMM screen, stock exhaust with nasty crush bends and dents in the rear section, V15 NA cam, AW70 autotragic, 3.73 rear end... AC and PS intact.

Pat(Tuff240): 1983 242 DL, b23F, Manual version compression, B cam, cone filter, removed exhaust aft of resonator, m46, 3.91 rear end... No AC, but yes PS.

Jonathan(Stereophile33): 1983 242 Turbo, b23ET with 96.6 bore, 398 SCP head, VX cam, 90+ ex. manifold, m46, 3" exhaust, k-jet baby, 11psi, AC and PS

Renny(RennyD): 1990 740T, slipping hardcore AW71, A-cam, 16T @ 14psi, full 3" exhaust, MSD 6A, 46lb/hr CFIs, Cosmo Racing FPR, AC and PS.

Tim(guest): 1995 850T, stock, + auto tap(which is, what by the way?)

Ole(310): 1972 Opel Manta 1.9L, rebuilt to best tolerances allowed in ITB I'll assume, port matched to 1" manifolds(ITB ruling), cone filter, and single 2 1/4" Magnaflow, 4spd, with 4.22 rear end...

Nathan(wiggin): 1986 745Ti w/320k on it, 10psi?, m46, other stuff...?

Nick(guywithfx): stock, non-intercooled, 1982 244T, m46

Matt(budweiserman): 1985 745Ti, m46, 3" exhaust, other stuff...?

Everyone let me know if you have AC and PS, too, please.

Opel has one magnaflow muffler I want to say it's 2 1/4 and 4:22 rear end. Intake and exhaust manifolds are port matched only 1" deep. Still needs AFPR, she's running out of gas. Thats about it.

Edit mine. i still have the manual trans motor in it, although the auto trans is sitting on the engine stand.

Thanks guys, and damnit Pat, I was hoping that'd be another reason backing up your numbers... Yikes. That must just be a really good motor or something...

HAHA. 200k+ very hard/abused miles (didn't get much servicing) before I got it. Ask Nick, it was a mess when I bought it. Hell the timing belt broke on the way home. Entire engine compartment was covered in grease/oil from front leaky seals that looked like they had been that way for years. Why were they blown? Most likely because the flame trap and breather box were plugged solid from never properly servicing them. So yeah, it's a really good motor or something.
