I'm looking at 18's for my 244, yes I know I'll have to roll the lip, and I need spacers. what's the widest wheel I can run without major modification- 8" ?
I know this has been discussed ad nauseam, I just couldn't seem to locate the right thread

18x8 pegs fit with spacers and a rolling of the lip i believe
if your car is lowered you'll prolly need an adjustable panhard rod as well

18x7.5 rim to err on the safe side, with tires not exceeding 225. 8" and 235's may require fender rolling, suspension realignment, and/or correct offset spacing. After all these years, each car would differ, so.

what limits the tire width? do they need to be tubbed?

I've got 17x8's, I can't remember the offset/backspacing to save my life, and they fit fine. I had to roll the trailing fender lip pretty well on one side, and (ahem) massage the inner fenderwells a bit for clearance on articulation (diagonal driveway entry). This is with 225/45/17. Someone (Dale?) swears to be able to fit 245's in there... I dunno, maybe with narrower wheels.
Nah, if the narrower wheels are narrow enough to pull the tread in like that, it's an accident waiting to happen. Tyres do vary though, a centimetre isn't a huge amount & a "235" of one brand can be physically wider than a "245" of another.
Plus some people's definition of "fitting without rubbing" seems to be translatable to "the wheels will still physically turn although there may be a smell of burning rubber as they do so" ... :)
