View Full Version : Info Wanted: T5 (engine) plus M90...

I'm trying to help JT with some practicalities here. The devious plan involves mating a T5 engine to a whiteblock M90 for use in a RWD application (something that frankly I'm astounded more people don't do, especially here in the UK where there's almost no excuse). I'm suggesting that it'd be better to use the 850 flywheel and clutch, as they will have the correct pickup pattern, crank bolt pattern, etc, etc for the 850 lump. Being able to use the 850 manual flywheel / clutch would be a big help right now, not least because they actually exist in the states.

However, the BIG question is...does anyone know if an 850 flywheel / clutch combo will mate directly to a whiteblock M90 (by reputation almost identical to the M56 FWD manual box)? Alternatively, does anyone know a friendly Scandanavian who has done this swap would could confirm or deny?

cheers

almost a 100 percent sure they will.

You can get the 850R clutch in canada. Its about 200 USD iirc.

how much for the 850R flywheel?

or what would the complete setup cost me

just use the NA 5spd flywheel. Same deal, easy to find in the states. Stay away from the dual mass.

ok, there's an NA manual 850 at the local ultra-cheap pnp yard

Cool, thanks Doug. I was 99% sure it worked that way, but sometimes you need that knowledgable voice to confirm what you're thinking. Anyway, if it doesn't work, I'll just blame you

Those 850R clutches are a bit on the pricy side...or am I just living in a delusional world of low power and weedy clutches? :omg: :-D

cheers

The stock T5 clutch might do.. but a Spec or Clutchnet is 2x the price. The 850R is supposed to be good to about 350whp.

Sachs is supposed to be good, but the price is awful. No better than the 850R clutch. Now if you could get JUST the disc and then a 100 over PP that'd be the sweet setup.

Who told you that? :-P

I think it probably holds quite a bit more than that. I think I've seen quotes more in the 450-550 whp range... I know I drive (drove) my car like it was stolen and saw <3000 rpm spikes to 30 psi without ever even a hint of slippage. I wasn't at 350 wheel but I wasn't so far away that I couldn't tear up the clutch by driving hard

Swedish Mike (of Atech) told me when I was asking him in PERSON. :p

Then again, aren't you pretty sure yours is a 850R disc with a 50 or 100 over PP ;-)

What RWD bellhousings would work with a 5cyl? I'm thinking of putting an N/A 5cyl in my 142S, but whiteblock cars are rare in the junkyards here. Would it be reasonable to Heli-arc the face of a FWD 5cyl bellhousing to say, a cyl ford T-5 bellhousing? I wish to use a T-5, so I'm thinking that might be my best option. Just wondering if anyone else might have some input.

In terms of Volvo stuff, any box from a 960, and that's it.

Im thinking there are 2 options:

960 bellhousing + T5 adaper, hydrallic clutch/throwout bearing.

Whiteblock -> GM (or Ford) bellhousing adapter.

Ben (blkaplan) and I are working on conversion kit parts.
