I got this car December 04 for £350 off ebay. Its a 1989 740 B230ET with M46. It had 173000 Miles when i first got it.

Travelled down on the train then got a lift with Griz to pick up the car. Its then a 140 mile trip back home.

On the way, had a meet up with griz and chas

After running the car of a couple of weeks, its time to clean it up and fix a few issues

During this time, it had its first Turbobricks meet - UK meet 6. At this meet, one of the foglights decided to stop working.

At the end of February, the car had a service and a few other parts added to it

The back exhaust box bracket had broken just after I had the car so I found a way of routing the gases another way

http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/03-03-05/finishedrice.jpg

Pete (chesh740r) had a spare silver splitter so we replaced the black one for a better look.

http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/03-03-05/silversplitter.jpg

I had some driving lights left over from my old 745 so we fitted these to the car

At the start of May 05, I had managed to get hold of a set of lowering springs and shocks from ebay. With Pete (chesh740R) and Griz's help, we got these fitted.

Besides the foglight what other things did you have to repair?

1stRaven

In December 05 with Dave's (volvorsport) help, the engine had some upgrades

A new t3/t4 hybrid turbo, K&N filter, Strut Brace, Baileys DB26 Dump valve, Chipped ECU and a new mbc.

This has made a big difference to the way the car drives. It pulls so much better when it is in boost and yet, if a lot more fuel economical under 2500 rpm.

last, a video of it. The noise level is too high for the mic but you will get an idea.

http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/video/new exhaust.avi

A few problems with it.

First, the crossmember below the rear seats is a tad close to the exhaust and it bangs over every bump. I need to find a way of sorting this so if anyone has any ideas.
http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/exhaust/IMAG0046%20(Medium).JPG

Second is the back pipe is about 3" too short so is hidden from the back when you look down. Also makes it very noisy in the car

Third is the noise. OMG this is loud. I was going to try it without boxes but I will be ordering one next week to go on the back.

The new parts from Thailand (VBS) arrived this week. I got them sprayed up myself and put them on the car.

New parts

Snow cap
http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/parts/25-05-06/IMAG0056 (Medium).JPG

Clear Lenses
http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/parts/25-05-06/IMAG0060 (Medium).JPG

Sprayed up the cap and bottom of the lenses. The paint bubbled a bit on the bottom of the lenses but after a few coats, came up fine.
http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/parts/25-05-06/IMAG0066 (Medium).JPG

Painted the bulbs to make them amber for legal reasons. These came out way too dark so redid a spare set of bulbs a lot lighter. Didn’t look as good but provide the right colour of light.
http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/parts/25-05-06/IMAG0065 (Medium).JPG

The parts installed.
http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/clears/IMAG0071.jpg

They do look a little strange but I think this is due to how clean they are compared to the rest of the car. They should look fine in a month or so.

and from last weekend

We took a look at the task ahead. Firstly, evidence that the 90+ manifold
has a very small hole in the flange. http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_manifolds.jpg

We then compared the wastegate housings / turbo outlets. The ATP has such a
massively better flow path for the WG hole

The ATP also has a honking huge outlet! [img]http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_flappers2.jpg

...and the flapper can open a lot further, too. http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_flappers1.jpg

Since the exhaust side of the head was wide open, it would be rude not to
try out the SSAutocrap header. We noted how it actually leaves the turbo in
quite a sensible location. And how it's held together with lady's welds. http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_ssac.jpg

After a combined effort from myself and Mr BB-Q, the 90+ had a T3-flange
sized hole in it. http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_manifold_ported1.jpg

Shiney! :) http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_manifold_ported2.jpg

The WG hole on the 'Chinese special' T3/T4 hybrid was TINY given the size of
even the standard flapper, so we set about porting this out too. http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_wg_preporting.jpg

Wait...what do you think this is BB-Q, a Turbobricks meet or something? http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_ziptie.jpg

Ah yes, zipties for teh win! http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_porting.jpg

A slightly more respectably sized WG hole. http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_wg_ported.jpg

The oil drain had to be modified to fit the different spacing created by the
move to the 90+ manifold. We also switched to the Mitsubishi actuator, as
the Garrett one is huge, and makes turbo removal most tricky. However, this
made clearance seriously tight. http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_actuator.jpg

After that was all bolted up, it was time to get busy with the MIG http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_welding1.jpg

...and some more... http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_welding2.jpg

...and some more... http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_welding3.jpg

....until we had a very smart looking open downpipe. http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_open_dp.jpg

The arrangement at the turbo end was super-neat http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_dp3.jpg

Close-up: http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_dp2.jpg

Old vs new: http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_dps.jpg

New, close-up http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_dp1.jpg

The system was re-hung, and after a few tweaks which dictated a second
overnight stop, declared completed. The end result as seen primarily by STI
and Evo owners ...a very highly polished just-under-3" tailpipe... http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_pipe1.jpg
http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/blackpool/blackpool_pipe2.jpg

Boost control is now solid, and there has been a notable improvement in
performance (quite literally) pound for pound. The DP is virtually a work of
art and thanks again to Mark and family (especially the highly patient
Tina!) for their help and hospitality. Top folk :)

A bit of an update on the car.

After being off the road for six weeks due to new pas rack being fitted (long story), the car made it to a meet in oxford last weekend. On the way down, it was noticed that while under boost, lots of blue smoke was coming out the exhaust. It made it back (using 4 litres of oil to cover 240 miles) and is now (again!) off the road as we move house.

Plan is to get a 940 lpt block (with 13mm rods and squirters) in, get a t3 and rebuild it, fit my t4 compressor and wheel onto the t3 and put the whole lot in place of the current engine. Should hopefully fix the oil burning issue and the multiple oil leaks that I currently have.

and following on from the last post,

We got the block on monday, and got it onto the stand last nght. I'm planning to start working on it tomorrow but this made change looking at the forecast.

Inlet manifold came with the engine so I managed to get a cruise control throttle spool and 940 tps (if anyone wants one, the tps is for sale)

and summit racing have just delivered the parts for my turbo oil drain (2 sets as BB-Q wants one too)

I've just seen how out of date this thread is so time for a big update.

After fitting the engine - it turned out the head bolts were torqued wrong (long story) so one snapped.

Stump came out fine though
http://www.foggyjames.co.uk/inbox/700R_march_6.jpg

had a bit of fun with the engine 2 foot up in the air

In the end, got it all back in. Oil pressure issue was down to the oil filter boss so this was replaced.

Looks awesome!! You've put in some great work and parts there. My 7s are jealous.

Might I suggest painting the trim around the windows black? I think it would make the car look longer/lower and really compliment the black trim/rims/tint.

Maybe try a photoshop of it first?

http://www.ryanniblett.co.uk/images/744/dyno_result.jpg

Good points : 258Bhp at the crank with 280ft/lbs of torque at 1.7bar (23 psi) of boost.

Bad points - Short story : Engine is shot.

Bad Points - Long story :

On the drive down, the car seems to struggling at some points to get up and go. Once we arrived, Iain noticed that it was not idling on all 4 cylinders (James and myself thought that this was due to the 630cc injectors that had recently been installed). Iain did a compression test and leak test on all the cylinders.

Cylinder 1 : 150 Compression, 41% leak
Cylinder 2 : 170 Compression, 30% (I think) leak
Cylinder 3 : 150 Compression, 40 % leak
Cylinder 4 : 190 Compression, No leak test.

So, it seems that the rings are shot and from the tuning runs we did, it was down to the spark map being set too agressively off boost. On boost map was pretty much good.

We did two power runs anyway which gave the 258bhp figure. From what Iain said, with a good bottom end, it would of been over the 300 mark.

On the way home, the car decided to blow its head gasket and then one of the studs holding the turbo on decided to shear off.

Time to do another engine swap.

Edit - I forget to mention that the above dyno result was on standard 95 octane fuel.

and time for another update.

After visiting the dyno again, we hit a figure of 275bhp at the crank on 95 fuel but found that one pot was running lean due to a faulty injector. We also found that over 25 psi of boost, the clutch has started slipping and since we will be running more boost than this, a 4 puck paddle clutch has been ordered from clutchnet. I'm hoping to get these finished soon and get it back on the road for the end of May.

neat to see it rolling the rollers!!!

often thought about a 230fk, not many of them about, but seems to be the best engine in terms of it having squirters and thick rods and a nicer head/cam all in one ready to pull package??

what management are you running? msne = ??? not too up on it LOL

1stRaven
06-03-2008, 06:17 AM
We used the head from my b230et engine (531) since it is slightly better than a 530. Plus gave us chance to replace the headgasket since it will need to be able to hold a decent amount of boost.

We are using megasquirt running twin coil packs.

foggyjames
06-08-2008, 09:09 PM
I think you might be getting a bit mixed up there with some other engine....B230FKs are the most common varient after 1995 (which is where the decent conditions blocks are generally to be found), but the head/cam combo (530/T) is pretty weak. The head isn't too bad, but the cam has to go!

The spec for my 360 (essentially the same as Ryan's 740) will be a standard 1997 B230FK block with a rebuilt 531 and an Enem V16 Turbo cam. Ryan's is just like that, except he's running his original 200k-old 531, and a K cam with a slot cut in it (which I reckon is 95% as good as the Enem cam, and a quarter of the price!).

Something I think is remarkable about this car is that the gearbox (M90) has over 300k on it. We tossed it in after smoking the M46's clutch (and thinking it wasn't worth buying another M46 clutch), as it's what I had lying around...half expecting it to implode...and it still shifts like new, despite that healthy amount of torque.

cheers

James

m90#s are mint, drove a late 940/60 on saturday with a b230ft (? think, looked LH, but code was worn off the front, not sure what an fk has different topside :S). with an m90, had 260,000miles but g'box was the nicest volvo box I've ever used! actually felt like a modern car and not a tractoor

foggyjames
06-09-2008, 06:15 PM
They do feel much nicer than the M4x series. They're basically the same inside as the M56 FWD box.

Once the B230FK was introduced, the FT & FK are identical, apart from the wastegate actuator giving ~7psi on a FT and ~4psi on an FK. FKs are generally in better shape, as they won't have been worked as hard.

Time to get a few more parts fitted and some little niggles sorted out.

Due to the position of the Air intake temp sensor, it has been getting heat soak so it needed to be moved. There was also the issue of the baileys DV36 blow off valve not being big enough to handle the air flow so that needed to be replaced.

And so...

1stRaven
06-12-2008, 03:48 PM
They went off to a friend who runs a dyno to see if he could sort them out. He had a lot of trouble making them seal since they seem to be slightly smaller than bosch ones. He has sent them back as I will need them for the weekend but not sure if he finally got to test them or not.

and yes, those were the same as mine. Seems one of the flow matched set was not flowing the same at all and causing one of the cylinders to run lean. Thats why i am running 10:1 afr or lower at full boost, in order to try and protect it.

Interestingly, the lean condition is now on #1. We didn't mark #3's injector before we sent it off, but it seems that one is now in #1...and an injector is indeed to blame. We'll stick it in #2, and see if that shows signs of lean running after a couple of hundred miles. If so...that injector has a date with a firing squad.

So the china turbo did actually pretty well, since it didn't blow up sooner?!

Yeah, 3 years and high boost didn't appear to put it off. Only issue now is the seals have gone on it and its burning oil.

For the last year, the turbo has been chattering when I let off due to the dump valve not really being big enough. I'm guess that might be what has killed it.

Ruben
09-02-2008, 06:45 AM
Ok, sounds like it might be an option for future plans.

Why not just put in new seal from ebay?

foggyjames
09-02-2008, 07:28 PM
We're not sure what to do for the best. It's proving hard to find a new turbo which is a direct match, as the new 'XS Powah' ones are a bit different. Genuine Garrett turbos are a bit spendy, and again it's not that east to find something which is exactly right...plus do we go external gate at this point, since this thing will creep to over 20psi whatever we do? Some people suggest that a seal kit is worthwhile. Others say no, and that unless the turbo is balanced, it will fail again soon anyway.

So many questions...

The 360 waterpump is a shorter pump which gives me more room up front. At the moment, there is only about half an inch between the end of the pump and the efan motor.

Now thats a good idea !! I have the same problem ..

But can you still use the stock 740 pully, or get a 360 pully ??

foggyjames
05-12-2009, 09:07 PM
You need to use the 360 pulley. The end of the pump is completely different.

With a bit of tweaking, Ryan's added some useful clearance, so there's no desperate hurry to fit the 360 pump...but it was originally...er...well...making contact!

As for the seat covers...I think the saloon ones are sculpted more like the front ones, while the estate ones are flat.

Another update (I need to stop doing this, actually shows I've been working on my car!)

Colour coded door mirrors have been fitted and the car passed its mot on Friday. Only items that remain to be fitted are the injectors and new spark plugs but these need to wait until I have the wideband back in the car (sensor was removed to make the exhaust fit the new turbo - Hopefully going to be extended on monday so the wideband will fit back in. )

I'll get some pics up once the car has been cleaned and sorted.

how did it end with the Siemens injectors? one was faulty?

1stRaven
05-27-2009, 05:59 AM
Well, I had them tested and they tested fine but one pot was still running lean over the others. James fitted the 680cc bosch ones this weekend and the idle/running over the car is a lot smoother although the fuel bins all needed increasing in MS. I need to pull the plugs this weekend and check to see the colours on them to make sure all of the cylinders are good.

We have a slight boost issue at the moment when it hits 20 psi, some sort of limiter kicks in (feels like your hitting fuel cut) so just working on sorting that out. New BOV has been ordered as well and my older mbc has been put back on (the current one would only appear to work over 4000 rpm)

Having to *increase* the values in the VE table with "larger" injectors was a head****. I assume the Bosch ones are designed to run a higher rail pressure....3 Bar instead of the stock 2.5 (or whatever it is?!). It doesn't really matter anyway...they're more than big enough as-is. The other worry is that the retaining clips don't fit (no grooves for them in the injectors), so they're only held in at the fuel rail end by the two bolts for the rail.

We swapped them over, added about 10 points to every 'normal driving' VE bin, and the idle became smooth more or less straight away. It still occasionally does something weird, but I think that's some little detail somewhere in MS. It's early days with regard to achieving 'perfection'. The new injectors are a massive improvement.

I think our friend flowbenched the Siemens injectors with DC. I suspect if you do a mixed duty cycle test, they will be all over the place at lower opening times. Two people have now suggested this quite independently, and it makes a LOT of sense.

Boost control...haha! We still have a problem with this, but we're not completely sure if it's the MBC or BOV to blame. The apparant 'boost cut' situation didn't occur with the old MBC, but that may just be because it was set slightly lower. The new one (well...it's the old one, strictly speaking...sold when we were originally going to use MS for EBC...now repatriated!) builds boost as it should...when the setup (as a whole) is behaving. Who knows exactly what is causing the problem?! The new HKS BOV should settle it. Eventually we're going to use a boost control solenoid triggered by MS, but it's still something else on the 'to do' list at this point.

cheers

James

Do you have some sort of nifty camera? Duno if this question was directed at me, but I have a few reasonably nifty cameras

Nikon D50 - pretty basic DSLR by today's standards and it was entry level three years ago when it was new, but still takes cracking pics.

Canon 1000F N - once again, pretty basic SLR - entry level stuff but I wanted something to start using film with

Hasselblad 1000F - My pride and joy. Built in 1954, with a Carl Zeiss lens, 100% manual controls. Medium format is gorgeous. only downside is that per picture it costs about 3 times as much as 35mm to use, but it's such a wonderful piece of equipment, i'd gladly live forever in debt as a tortured artist to continue owning it.

Not too bad at the moment. I've got the warped discs replaced for some drilled and grooved ones today, sorted out an oil leak from the turbo return and James is test driving it to see if the cruise control is working or not.

Its running at about 23 psi for the moment just so we can test a couple of things and then I'll turn up the wick again to 25-28 psi.

Only issue I had is that the insurance on it is limited to 2000 miles and it has done 1000 of those already in 8 weeks. It'll done another 500 this weekend so it doesn't have too long left on the road for this year.

Just an update on the car as I know its been quiet recently.

This year has been a bit of trying things and getting little bits sorted - just not everything I wanted in the end. Car is now back in the garage for the winter since the Efan decided to eat the rad in mid Oct. It was also quite close to the mileage limit on the car insurance policy for the year.

Now comes the big decision though. Its come to the point where I need to either sort out the engine and turbo with a rebuild and fix the wiring niggles and boost issues that car has had this year. OR insert a t6 block into the engine bay and play around with that from now on. They are getting cheap enough that its possibly become an option however there are a few things I need to work out for cost reasons. Either way, not sure if the car will return to the road next year or spend it on stands while the cash is saved up and the work is carried out.

As always, your opinions are welcome....

SteveP
11-10-2009, 06:26 PM
Hmm yes T6 engines are cheap but stick at the redblock! A T6 doesn't make that much more power and if you wanted to upgrade to a single turbo you'd need a custom manifold, no? How about doing some headwork and sorting the niggles for a reliable 300bhp? The issues you had this year are so minor compared to the efforts involved in fitting a T6 motor.

Or if your heart is set on a T6, I'd try finding a 960 manual and putting it all in that, funded by selling some of the pimp parts from the 700R?

CHESH740R
11-10-2009, 07:47 PM
Stick with the redblock, as i fear if you go the T6 route you'll have it running before i get mine done.

But in all seriousness, stick with the redblock, you've done the hard work of getting everything together, you just need to spend some time bullet proofing the things that let you down from enjoying the car.

So spend sometime rewiring the MS and the car, find another block and head and rebuild with forged bits.

Yes that will cost cash, but you'll only spend that rebuilding costs getting a stock t6 engine into the 700. Before you even get a chance to up the power.

Cost wise, the red block should be cheaper but wont have the power output of the T6 at the end of the day. Granted, this should be easier to do though as well.

T6 would require a rebuilt t6 block with pistons etc plus a manual 960 donor car for all those little bits that would be needed. I would think £2000 for that lot (which means it would cost about £4000 in real life).

Dr Dokeh
11-11-2009, 02:02 PM
Although I've only measured roughly so far, I'm fairly certain the stock manifold/turbo combo on the T6 won't fit a RHD bay without some sort of hideously misshapen downpipes twisting around everything in their path.

Custom manifolds would solve the issue though :oogle:

foggyjames
11-11-2009, 03:18 PM
The draw of a T6 is mainly that it'll make the same power whilst being more "relaxed"...spooling earlier, being smoother, etc. There were even mumblings about daily driving the 740 if T6 powered...but...it's a lot of work, and it'll need forged internals 'earlier' than the redblock.

I guess it depends on the car you want to create. The power potential is similar (block strength will ultimately limit the T6...RB26s and 2JZs being iron-blocked), but the delivery will be different. Starting from scratch, today, I would do a T6, rather than a B230 (in a 1.5 ton car)...but I think my gut feeling now is to stick at the B230.

To give a bit more of a size comparison, the turbo semi bolted on to a 90+ manifold. The 40mm m10 studs in the manifold are too small in height for the locking nuts to engage on so just order some 52mm ones.

Old headgasket still looked good so its stood up well to the various boost pressures over the summer - I think the max it saw was around 28psi.
