I say do it. Haggle with them and get the price down.
You know you want it.
$750.00 would be a fair price I would think. What have you got to lose?
Good luck with the purchase.

look for all problems with the car, i know you dont want to sound like an ass but helping my friend buy his 1990 740 turbo we got it from 2100 to 1600,
i could have gotten it lower but i didnt want to piss off the crack head who was selling it, i was scared of geting shanked
Look for rust behind the rear wheels, under the car, look at the exhaust, the transmission kick down cable if its an auto, check all electrical on the car, even check the shocks and other pieces to see if anything is loose,
good luck

One thing that my local mechanic friend (and 240 nut) recommends is to reach under the driver's side door and give the bottom of the car a good thwack with the palm of your hand once or twice. This can tell you what shape the floor is in, and consequently what shape the body structure is in, which my mechanic says is the main consideration when buying a 240.
Hope that helps.

ok im still debating on the car. took it for a drive. had some slight hesitation. but that was expected. the one thing that throws me off is the fact that im gonna need new ball joints. if it werent for that i be rockin it. but stil undecided

Ball joints aren't too hard to replace, they are a wear item and don't cost that much.

Much larger concerns in a car of that age/mileage than ball joints.
Such as:
- does it have lots of rust?
- will it need a rebuild really soon?
- are there a ****load of minor problems that the PO has been ignoring?

wiring harness shape, and over all electrical gremlins, look out for those. wiring quickly ended my 240's life after about 5 months of owning it. its not that difficult to replace, its just better to know what you are going into.
having bought a 240 turbo with 130k for $400 and paying too much :P. here's what i'd check for:
-rust, in lower parts under doors and behind wheels, crawl under the car and check the floorboards(as specially behind the drivers seat area) my car looked normal, but it was really a road sign screwed to the rusty floor and painted over
-oil leaks, crawl under the car and rub your finger along the underbody, and check the block, it should be red not black :P
-wiring, there are plenty under the intake mani, find one and pinch it with your fingers, if it falls apart in your hand, the harness has to be fixed/replaced
-turbo play, they aren't cheap, so check it
but overall, my car was solid, after replacing a lot of parts it's now a decent car, i don't know how the kid i bought it from drove it daily like it was
