Purchased the car in 2000 from my boss at the shop where I worked. At the time it was powered by a 2.2L B21(?) with forged Arias flat top pistons, custom ported cylinder head with larger valves, dual Weber 45DCOEs, and a Stahl header. It came with a set of 17" Volvo Titan wheels. Suspension was decent, cut springs all around with custom revalved bilstein shocks. It also had IPD sway bars, 25mm front and rear. The car was also equipped
with a Dana clutch-type limited slip differential. It handled well, made decent power, and was quick enough to be fun. In 2002 it was dynoed on a Mustang Dyno at 136hp and 148lb-ft with a broken accelerator spring in the front carburetor. Pretty decent, but I was expecting more.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Volvokiller/Carlisle_2004.jpg
I used the car for a few years for autocrossing and driving on the street occasionally. It sat around a lot, as it would not pass state inspection with the carbs, nor could I afford the insurance at the time. Then in the summer of 2003, I heard about a drift event at a local track, Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia. I decided to register for it and see what I could do. I did pretty well at the event, for having close to the least amount of horsepower. The track was too large for the car with its current power level. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Volvokiller/turn_five_inside.jpg
The next drift event was a practice held in a parking lot outside of Richmond, VA. This was November of 2003. I went to this event and did a little better, with the car being more suited to the smaller venue.
In 2004 I participated in a few events with the car, now making a bit less power due to a bottom end swap. The lack of air filters on the air horns caused the cylinder walls to wear, so the rings no longer sealed very well.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Volvokiller/turn_5_smoky.jpg
At an event at Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, VA, I came off the banking on one turn and lost control into a tire wall. The car fared well, of course, with some left front fender damage and a broken headlight surround.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Volvokiller/whatdent.jpg
So we pulled the fender out and I got back out on course.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Volvokiller/banksmoke.jpg
I drove the car at Summit Point for the second year in a row, and did a little bit better with more experience under my belt. I made it into the final group of 8 cars, and then to 4, where the bottom end gave up. Must have spun a rod bearing, but I didn't ever investigate fully. So that was the end of that engine.
The car was also my daily driver at that point, as my turbo engine swap in my 262 Bertone had taken quite a bit more time than expected. So now I was without a running vehicle to get to and from work. Fortunately I could borrow a 242GT from my roommate (Chris, 242GTMD) and use that for a week. But it was crunch time on the Bertone. I spent quite a bit of time that week working on getting the Megasquirt in the Berturbo operational, and finally, on Saturday, I got to drive it around for the first time. So now that the Berturbo was up and running, the blue car took a rest on my trailer, where it lived for a few months.
In December of 2004, I decided it was time to build the blue car as my drift car, instead of doubling up with the Berturbo as my daily driver/drift machine. This was a good idea, I believe, but also took quite some time to come to fruition. I spoke with a friend about doing a rollcage for it, and he said it would be no problem. I began working on the car, stripping the interior and getting as much crap out of it as I could. I trailered it up to Hagerstown,
MD, where Travis of SVR would be putting the roll cage in. I didn't expect this to take as long as it did, but more on that later.
The first drift practice event of 2005 came on January 15th, at Virginia Motorsports Park, also outside of Richmond, VA. It was at this event that my Berturbo would run for the last time. I had an issue with the Megasquirt, which rendered the car dead. I towed it home, and worked on it for the next week or so, while driving the aforementioned 242GT. It turns out that at some point while driving the car, one of the valve springs had broken. I got the
megasquirt hooked up and ready to go, and was trying to start the car. All of a sudden, it stopped cranking. After a few more attempts, I knew something was up. I decided to pull the cylinder head and see what was up. What I found was ugly: the broken valve spring, broken valve, and a nice hole in the block. This was the end of the Berturbo.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Volvokiller/brokenvalve2.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Volvokiller/houstonwehaveaproblem.jpg
Back to the 242. After dropping it off with Travis of SVR, I got to work on ordering parts. I collected quite a bit of stuff, including a Mustang T5 trans, with bellhousing adapter from vperformance. I got a clutch from clutchnet.com to fit the swap. I also picked up a Proturbo manifold from the group buy organized by Dave Barton. My biggest purchase was a Garrett GT2871R turbo from ATP Turbo, dual ball bearing with the upgraded 4" compressor inlet. This thing is a monster, and seemed like the best of the GT series to fit my engine and performance needs. Spool should be decent with the ball bearings and the Proturbo manifold, and peak power should be excellent. While I was busy collecting parts, the roll cage production was moving along very slowly.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Volvokiller/hoop.jpg
It obviously takes a long time to build a roll cage, and this one was no exception. While building the cage, he was also making the downpipe and exhaust, as well as welding up the piping for the Tial 38mm external wastegate.

A lot of work had to be done.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Volvokiller/bluecarhome.jpg
I finally picked the car up from Travis on Dec. 3rd, 2005. I was excited to get it back and start finishing the car up. First on the adgenda was supposed to be body work. But I soon heard of the first drift practice event, which was to be held on Feb. 18th at VIR. The goal was changed from getting body work done first, to working on the mechanicals. The engine and transmission came out, and were parted out. The engine bay was cleaned up and painted, and in went the B230FT.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Volvokiller/enginewturbo.jpg
This engine was a 94 L block, with the desireable piston oil squirters. I changed nothing with the bottom end, except for a custom oil pan built by Mike Perry. The cylinder head was a 530 casting, with port and polish work done by myself, and stock valves, but using comp cams springs for the extended higher-rpm use this engine was to see. I found an IPD turbo cam on ebay, and tossed that in as well. The intake manifold was port matched,
and it had custom intercooler piping built by Travis as well, used to fit the generic ebay intercooler.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Volvokiller/intercooler.jpg
Everything was coming together nicely.
As for suspension, I used the IPD bars that were already on the car, but switched just about everything else. Michael Towery helped me swap the rear axle, to a welded differential that I picked up from Mike Perry. I installed 325-lb rear stock car springs, with adjustable perches from stockcarproducts.com. I used the revalved bilsteins that were on the car already in the rear. For the front, I had picked up a set of ITB-spec struts from Tom Smith. These were shortened tubes, with Koni double-adjustable inserts. I also got a set of GroupA style camber plates, also from Tom. I grabbed the SAM strut tower brace which had been on my Bertone, and after performing the alignment, was ready to roll.
I had planned on running Megasquirt on this engine from the get-go, and then once fuel maps were tuned fairly well, the plan was to switch to MSnS-extra. But that plan changed when, after hooking up my MS box, I got no spark from the coil. Somehow something had been damaged in the MS box, and it was grounding out that circuit. So I switched to MSnS-extra. After a week of attempting to get it started, with help from Ben and Lawrence, we figured out that the MSnS box that I had was damaged too. It was continuously firing injectors as soon as the key was turned on. This obviously created some problems, like a crankcase full of fuel! So after this was figured out, Lawrence let me borrow his MSnS box, and the car started soon after installing that box. A little tuning and I was able to drive it around a bit. Then Chris and I headed out on the highway to do some pulls and more tuning.
The tuning went well, and the car was easily driveable. I drove it to and from work for a few days, to try and help break in the clutch, and do a little bit of tuning at the same time. We were now less than 2 weeks away from the drift practice event. It was definetely fun to drive, and the turbo did spool very quickly. Using the spring that came in the Tial wastegate, I was running just under 10psi of boost. It felt very quick, and full boost was acheived just under 3000 rpms. I was very pleased. After a week of driving like this, I upped the boost to 15 psi, and Chris and I went out for some more tuning runs. Fortunately, I had guesstimated the map on the rich side, so it was safe at that boost level, with no pinging. As we adjusted the maps and watched the air/fuel ratio move from 10:1 towards 12:1, the car got faster and faster. We were both amazed at the difference that 2 points of AFR could make. After settling on a safe tune, I felt the car was ready for the track. I installed the 2 sparco seats, and both harnesses, and cleaned up some of the wiring mess. On the Thursday before the event, I loaded the car on my trailer, and was ready to go!
The event started on a Saturday morning, but I had the day off work on Friday. Chris, Michael and I left around 12:30 from our place, and headed down to VIR. The drive took about 4 and a half hours, and we made it with no issues. Checked into the hotel, and hung out. Saturday we got up early and headed to the track. Got the registration and tech inspection finished, and waited for my turn on course. It was quite cold, and there were snow showers expected at some point during the day. Fortunately, our first session on track was dry. The car did well, as I took my time getting up to speed, to learn both the car and the course layout. I had the boost turned back to 10psi for Saturday. It seemed good, but I couldn't wait to turn it up. The second session of the day was done with snow flurries falling, and a very wet track. So it was basically just an attempt at not spinning. But it was still a lot of fun.
Sunday morning was dry, and I was very excited to see how the day went. I started in the morning with the boost set at 10psi still, and became much more familiar with the track. After lunch, I cranked the boost to 15, and that's when the real fun started. After a switch to a different set of rear tires, and with the boost level raised, the car was a monster. I could hold much more angle, and actually started to see some smoke off the rear tires. It gave me a lot of confidence in the car, and made me anxious to turn the boost even higher. I did have a few issues with loose turbo mounting hardware, which caused some melted paint and a cooked upper timing cover, but other than that, the car ran very well. I was pleased with the results.
Now the car is apart, waiting for a new turbo to manifold gasket. After it gets put back together this week, I will be installing the R brakes on the front, and then my new wheels. As soon as everything gets mounted up, I will be sure to post pics of them. Of course, the car will still not be complete, as I am still working on the body work, and getting ready for paint. That is quite an ordeal, of course. Some day it will be complete though, I promise.
Future plans for the car include a built bottom end, to support 20 to 25psi of boost, and of course more tuning of the MSnS. I have to get on a dyno at some time in the near future, to get the timing map sorted out better. Of course the paint still needs to be done, which should come at some point in March or April. And then I will just work on driving the car and having a good time while drifting, and the occasional trip down the 1/4 mile.

The car is a BEAST. I rode in it on Saturday at low boost, and its NUUTS. It helps that Rob is a pretty damn good driver.
I've got the old 2.2l B21, and its just ring wear not cylinder wall luckily.
Watch Rob this year, He'll go far drifting. I think that Formula D is quite a possibility for next year.

Haha, no, no white, no pink. The car will be painted dark blue, hopefully much like what it used to be.
As for the wheels, they are custom made Kodaik Racing Wheels. www.kodiakracingwheels.com , go figure.
Anyway, fronts (not shown) are 17X8", et 3, weigh 18lbs each. Rears are 17X9.5", et 0, weigh 17lbs each. Weight difference due to thick hub flange on the fronts, in order to clear the future R brakes.

The wheels cost roughly $500 a piece, after anondizing and shipping, etc. I bought six, 2 front and 4 rears. Not cheap, but definetly built solidly, and nice and light.
They're made by Kodiak Racing, as stated earlier in the thread. www.kodiakracingwheels.com
And the LR quarter was full of bondo, so I cut it off at the trim line and welded another one on. I'm not very good at welding, and didn't prime it yet, so it looks like hell. Body work is coming, I promise :)
I had to do a ton of work to fit the 9.5" wheels. The rear quarters took quite a beating. But it looks good, and will look awesome after the paint gets done. The low rear shot is just crazy, because they stick out so far and have nice meats on them.
For tires, I will use 225/45 17 Falken Azenis RT-615s in the front, and will try both 255/40 17 Falken ST-115s and some 235/45 17 Dunlops I have. Not sure if the current power level will allow easy drifting on the 255s. I will have them mounted for the next event, which is coming up on the 11th of March. So stay tuned :)
After that it will get the serious body work done and then off to paint.
Thanks for all the compliments everyone!

Sweeeeet!!! I was just looking at the Kodiak website a couple weeks ago, but left with the conclusion that I didn't think any of their wheels would be a good match for something that's a daily driver... Granted, I don't think your car really counts for a daily driver, but the wheels look good enough to sure as hell be put on one!!! Looks great man! I think I have changed my mind on Kodiak wheels for street/track use now, even on a daily driver...

Well, to fit the 255s took quite a bit of work. What I did was drill out all of the spot welds around the fender lip. Then I separated the outer quarter panel from the inner part. I cut the edge off of the inner, where it comes down and bends back in towards the car. I then used a porta-power to push the inner part out, which in turn pushed the quarter panel itself out. Once I had it out far enough, I folded the quarter panel lip up over the inner panel, and welded it up. I will try and get some pictures this week of the work I've done.
Finally got the R brakes on the front on Friday as well, so I will get pics of that too.

Now I'm rather confused...I was under the impression that the breathed on B21 NA was making big power, and ran a seriously quick 1/4 time (for an NA redblock in the US)....like a 14 or something. According to what you've written there (and assuming a figure quoted at the crank), it's making less power than mine :omg: If it did run a 14 with that power, I REALLY need to get a shorter diff and a lightened flywheel in mine and go run something that isn't a 17...
Awesome project. That car is lusted over on both sides of the atlantic. Just the other week someone posted a pic of it on V3M. Be sure to keep us posted :)

The 136 was wheel horsepower, and the fastest 1/4 was 15.7 @ 85 or so. The car never ran the 1/4 in the 14s or on nitrous.

The nitrous was never run at the track. And actually, Rob never really used the nitrous himself I don't think.

Dyno was just days after a major reassembly, so the tuning and preperation was not quite there. A carb issue also led to what occurred during the runs, as seen below...
136/148 was pretty good considering...but I think we had all expected ~180whp.
Yes, it was loud.

That's what I was thinking of doing. Mine will need to come out about another 1/4 of an inch because I have 10"ers :). With the panels separated is there any risk of the chassis flexing or getting out of shape? Cant wait for pics..

I've started dumping my photos of the car to this gallery...
off dana's home server (http://71.126.181.53:5555/gallery2/v/towerymt/blue/)
From the inner panel, remove the fender lip. Push the panels out, fold the lip from the outer panel flat over the inner, weld in place. The rear portion of the quarter (behind the wheel) was pushed out using a 240 scissor/screw jack and blocks of wood. Once the panel is seperated along the bottom at the spare tire well, the jack can be used to push it out. Then weld a support rod in place to hold it, and fill in the gaps.
http://71.246.201.95:5555/gallery2/d/23603-1/PICT0828.jpg
This is looking up at the left rear panel. The left side of the frame shows a silver colored piece of scrap metal used to brace the panel at the desired width. Rob got a little carried away with the cutting tools and removed more than necessary from the inner panel (large hole leading into the trunk). Ideally, you'd continue cutting away the inner panel where it meets the roof of the wheel well, push it out flush with the outer panel, and weld in a piece to close the roof. Thus giving a square opening 12-13" wide for insanely low ride heights (tucking wheel with no rub, if you like).
Credit goes to Tom Smith for first explaining this to me back on the old Turbobricks EZboard forums. It's taken me that long to get wheels/tires large enough to need to do this to my own car. By the summer I'll be sporting bigger wheels/tires than Rob. :D

It's a Gemini hood...got damaged in shipping, but I threw it on there anyway. The new one should be coming soon... :)
It's in ugly mode now, took off the wheels so I can do bodywork and paint. The rear quarters look hilarious with 195s in the back!!

did you straight up weld on the rear main panel? If you straight up welded without doing spotwelds it will warp the metal pretty badly

What's a "rear main panel"? The quarter panel lower half on the drivers side was tacked on, then welded. I haven't noticed any warping.

Thanks for the positive remarks guys! It was a nice quick 2 1/2 hour paint job with some masking tape and 6 spray cans...not permanent by any means. But I agree, it looks pretty good. Still have to do all the body filler, etc.
Inc3pt, the chrome window trim will be painted black at some point soon.
Hormone83, the wheels do not rub at all, no clearance issues whatsoever. Towery and I made SURE we had the exact offset and space in the fenders that we needed.
Kenny, I can't wait for SE either. I'll need to strap it on the dyno and get you to make a nice pretty timing map for it.
Doug, the R brakes are awesome! I hadn't really stomped them hard before last night on the way home, and good god, I'm glad I had the 5pt harness on!!! Those things are amazing. The Azenis left 2 stripes in the road, but they weren't quite locked up :) Guess I got them nice and hot.
Athlon, I have been having trouble with the grille. Forgot to add the washers yesterday, but I had them in there previously.
BDKR, I added that trunk lid recently, but yes it is a 86+. Got it specifically for my spoiler, which is obviously not mounted yet.
Billy, the event is in Manassas at Old Dominion Speedway. Practice starts around 10am, the event around 2pm or so. You gonna make it?
Thanks again guys.

If it came in a can and you are wanting to put a nice paintjob on it, you will need to take it all the way off. That stuff is bad juju. Wet sanding seems to work best as it helps keep the sandpaper clean. Spray can paint clogs up sandpaper real easy.

Yeah, just 245s in the back on the 9.5" wheels. The tires I had on for the burnout were pretty much toast anyway....
Front fenders are not flared at all, just have the inner edge rolled. Rear fenders have been pulled 1-1.5".
It's going to be painted a dark blue, like it used to be. I'm thinking maybe the new Magic Blue from the newer volvos, I really like that color.
Exhaust/manifold/turbo is all described in the first or second post...Proturbo manifold, Garrett GT2871R, and 3" all the way back with a dynomax bullet muffler, and side exit.

No, haven't gotten any shots of the suspension. It's just a basic coilover, but the strut tubes have been shortened. I still need to make new adapters for bump steer and roll center correction, I think Bne is working on a new method for those things. I've got a set of roll correction spacers, but they're not installed, as I don't have a proper method of attaching my bump steer spacers. Wouldn't be too hard to make, but I just haven't had any time lately.

Ok. Not really anything bad. Bent one of the REAR Kodiak wheels. The outer lip was folded quite a bit. Pics will be posted shortly I'm sure. The inner has a very slight bend which can be hammered out. I already ordered the outer lip from Kodiak, should have it before the next event hopefully.
That was the better of the bad news. The worse one is that the wastegate pipe from the manifold to the gate cracked, creating a loss of boost. (Still makes ~2psi!!!) There is a slip-fit section at the downpipe where the wastegate return goes, but I guess there wasn't enough play. Flex-section is on order, and should be installed soon. Don't wanna have that happen again.
So all in all, the event sucked. I did 3 and 1/2 runs. The 3rd run was the one where I bent my wheel, and the 4th run was when the wastegate pipe cracked. So an early day for me, when I thought I could have done well against some good local competition. Oh well, I'll iron out these issues and have it ready for Hyperfest in July.
Hank Scorpio
06-14-2006, 06:19 PM
Rob you want flex joints on the DP and the wastegate (if its plumbed into the exhaust which it sounds like) between the gate and DP.
I sheared mine off at the collector because I wasn't running a flex.

On the subject of hitting walls - thanks again Rob for letting me ride along during that run at SE. The craziest ride I've ever been in my whole life. I was surprised the car came out with the amount of damage it did, for some reason it seemed much worse when we hit the wall.

Ouch, drifting be hard on cars, seems almost criminal to treat a 242 like that.
Still, there is something pure sex about a flat black 242 built purely for function...

No real idea. For a stock L block, this motor saw an awful lot of abuse. The drifting events are murder on equipment. The car never gets driven normally, except on/off the trailer. When on the track, or *ahem* in front of Sams shop, the car is full throttle/high rpms the entire time.

Did you spend much time prepping the floors for the paint [removing crap still stuck to it from the sound deadening] or did you just spray it right over? I'm debating just throwing some rhino-liner type stuff on the floors of the 244.
Volvorules
04-17-2007, 06:35 PM
I didn't spend a bunch of time on the little details. I scraped all the tar paper off, and in most sections there is still a bit of the adhesive on the floor. I did take WD-40 and clean up the front floor sections and trans. tunnel, but on the floor in the back I didn't do much. It actually doesn't look bad with the semi-flat paint on it. I was thinking of the rhino-liner stuff, but just figured painting it would be easier. I'm just happy it's not that nasty tan color anymore :)

what is rhino liner?
It's a spray on truck bedlining, it's normally used for truck beds and is grittier than the normal plastic linings used, and it is fairly permanent. Durable but possibly heavy as mentioned.
http://www.adventure4wd.com.au/good_oil/images/rhino_linings_brand.jpg
I figure maybe just a coat or two of paint and the OEM rubber winter mats should do to keep it looking decent if thats a concern.

you should truck bed line just your driverside where your feet will be the stuffs like 7 dollars a can for the duplicolor stuff. it wont add any weight if you just do the drivers side it wont wear threw like regular paint, hell maybe do the passenger side? you dont have to lay it down thick to get good results. i use it all the time the stuff rocks

I used the Dupli-color spray bedliner on my subwoofer box, worked out pretty well. I'm gonna get a gallon of the roll on stuff to do the rest of my cargo area. My buddy did this on the outside of his jeep and it came out great. Waaay better than the spray on stuff. I bet that even after you roll on the Duplicolor bedliner in the passenger compartment , it would still be lighter than the original tar paper crap.

At first i practiced on the boot lid, then moved on to the ret of the car. I have sprayed many cars since then, and i have learnt so much.
My tip for you, use a really heavy coat of spray putty!!! then apply a light black guide coat over it. once dry for a day, rub it back with a big block till no guide is left. then hit with primer, wet sand with 600, then paint away!!
Good luck man, i cant wait to see how it comes out.

what is spray putty?
Spray putty is a high build spray on bondo. It is awesome for making panels nice and flat. It can fill small imperfections or even larger ones depending on thickness. IMHO i believe you should always use it when preparing panels to be sprayed, as its the quickest and easiest way of prepping to get panels smooth as glass.
I use a primer-filler by Protec, which is a 2 in 1, so you dont need to put primer over the spray putty before you paint. You just put it on thick with a 1.4 or 1.6mm nozzle, apply your guide coat, then let cure for a while before you block off the guide coat. Then paint away!
Iv'e had great success with this product as it has very little sink-backs even after 7 years so far.

Is this the same as high build primer....just different terminology?

Is this the same as high build primer....just different terminology?
People interchange the names, but they are technically/chemically different.
"Spray putty" is polyester based and catalyzed with MEKP like bondo or Polyester Fiberglass Resin for that matter. IMO it is not really well suited for automotive use, but people certainly use it. I use Duratec polyester primer all of the time but I use it for composites fabrication (plug/mold surfacing).
It's quite porous after you sand it and is hydroscopic and isn't a sealer. In composites use you polish and wax it.
High Build, or Primer/Surfacer or surfacer/sealer etc is an actual high solids primer and its chemical makeup will be based upon whatever paint system you are using.
Surfacer/Sealer is the thing to use. You can scuff that car and wipe with wax/grease remover and shoot the car and know you have a nice fresh surface to work with that is for sure compatible with your chosen paint system. then bondo, then another coat of sealer, then color.
