My first post on turbobricks was a few years ago. It was when I started this project. The car is a 1 owner 1980 Bertone that my parents bought brand new. In 2002 the headgasket blew and the car sat in our garage for a couple of years. Over its entire life it had been well maintained and driven on the weekends. It also recieved a cheap paint job around 1999.
I am taking care of this project in stages. Stage 1, the drivetrain is almost complete. It consists of
Chevrolet Gen II LT-1 engine (fuel injected 350 chevy, iron block w/aluminum heads)
Factory rating about 275hp and 300tq.
I have rebuilt it to stock specs.
4l60 transmission (4 speed overdrive automatic)
I have a massive fuel system because I will be adding forced induction or nitrous in the future.
16 gallon fuel cell
Aeromotive fuel pump, filter, and bypass regulator
-8 feed lines
-6 return lines
I started this buildup in my highschool shop class. All the body work and painting was also done there. I couldnt have done this project without the help of my teacher. He is a hotrodder himself. So when he found out what I wanted to do, he was on board. You will see some of his cars in the backround of my pictures from time to time.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/hotrods.jpg
Can you spot the real hotrod?
So the first thing I did was pull the old motor out I cleaned up the engine bay, shaved the battery tray, and put down some fresh black paint.

So the progress kept on progressing. I worked on it for a ton of hours. about 12 hours a week for about a year. I used block hugger headers that cleared the steering shaft. PCMs for less did the computer programming. I slapped a new optispark and water pump on it. Used a corvette radiator, as recomended in the JTR book. For a fan I used a dual 12" flexalite slimline fan. I had to chop it up a little, like the entire car but it fits.

Now I am working on parting together all of the suspension parts. So far all I have are the bilstiens. I am about to build some coilovers, urethane bushings, sway bars, build some subframe connectors and detail the undercarage. I also want to get all the kalpenhein racing parts. sorry about the spelling. I also want to put the new style dashboard in it with a new heater core and blower motor.

Sounds good, I've been in a stock (save for rust repairs on the russian steel roof) 82' Australian spec 262C with a 355 holden v8 stroker making 500hp or so and the tubs have been worked to fit 255/55/17 rims I beleive, having a 262C ain't subtle, the roof does that quite well, but they are awsome.

Right on. I love 262C Bertones. Not sure I agree with your engine choice, but you've put in a lot of work, and I'm sure it will be a beast! Good luck with it man ;-)

Wow, a surprising amount of room around the headers there.
Looks nice.

Looks fantastic. I hope the optispark treats you better than 99% of the people out there. It's a funny looking sway bar you've got, is that a Bertone thing? It's fat like my IPD bar but the droop is so much narrower...
Edit - blah, that's your motor mount.

So the car is running right? Have you dyno'd it? A stock LT1 with no tune, headers/exhaust and a 6spd will put down around in the 270s for HP.... Depending on where you are I know of a place where you can get the car dyno-tuned and get it tuned right ;D (where i work ;) ).
Anyways beyond the thread jack I'm a fan of the car. It's definately a sleeper. Have you been able to weigh the car with that motor setup? I'm sure its quicker than a camaro with the same motor/setup.

The computer has a pcm for less program on it. Headers, no cat, 150 degree t-stat, cold air intake, no egr, a few free mods, alternator and crank pully. I havnt dyno'd it yet because I am having to tweak out the throttle cable. I can take it to about 8/10ths throttle right now. it hauls anyways.

can i see the link? was it for ricekiller.com?
I am gunna slap some 17's on it so I will need spacers.
I am about to update everything. I am having the tranny rebuilt right now with art morrison parts and getting a hughs 2500 stall. should be pretty neeto.

Well i got the tranny worked out. New additions are...
87+ dashboard
Autometer guages
Bilstien HDs all around
Ipd v6 25mm front sway.. (i need a rear ipd bar if anyone wants to sell one)
cut v6 springs in the front
ipd wagon overloads
virgos with 205/50/15 falken rt615s
I handles much better but is very stiff to say the least. coilovers are coming soon and a less stiff rear spring.
I made it out to the 1/8th mile track and the falkens didnt do to good. I was expecting that. everyone was looking at me funny when i did huge burnouts from one tire.
for the record i was spinning all the way down the track...

I have blacked out the front end
installed a newer dashboard
added autometer guages
graphite virgos with 205/50/15 falkens rt615s
cut another coil off the front v6 springs
added wagon overload springs (cut 2 coils)
bilstien HD's all around

Well, I had some problems with the dana 1031. I guess it didnt like all the torque and smokey burnouts. It took a dump.

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/danagear.jpg
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/danacover.jpg
So I found another rear end and had them swapped in about an hour. I had a truetrac sitting around but sold it because I knew the 1031 wouldnt cut it with some sticky tires if it couldnt handle one 205/50/15.
Sooo... I read the forum for a while, along with some gm and ford forums and decided on a ford explorer 8.8 rear end. The 96+ models come with 31 spline axles, they can be found with factory limited slip diffs and have a nice disk brake setup. Oh and they are very abundant. I got mine for around $200.

So after taking some measurements and talking to everyone on the board I decided the housing would need to be shortend. Since the pinion is offset a couple of inches I figured I would just shorten the long side, and use two equal length axles. Well, Thats what I did, and the housing is still sitting in my garage! Call me lazy. I am also broke and the volvo needs a new optispark.
here are some size comparisons anyways.

time to update the projects page. I will start with my wheels
ARE 16x7.5 Refinished by Tim's Powdercoating in Dallas, Tx.
I am going to use these on the front of the car.
When I got them they all had bends and nicks
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/wheelsrepaired.jpg
Then they straitened them out and polished the lips
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/wheelspolished.jpg
Then comes the powdercoat
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/are4.jpg
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/are2.jpg
I still need to put the screws back in them.
I also have a set of ronals. 16x8 et10 5x4.25 bolt pattern. These are going on the 8.8 in the back. They are getting refinished the same way, polished lip, crazy gold butterscotch center.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/ronals.jpg
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/quarter-1.jpg
And now some 17x8 mustang wheels, they fit decent.

Unless you plan on going really low then I would go 3. Thats what I did with mine and have no complaints. I don't think I will ever break it. :P But there is always a chance. How wide did the 8.8 end up being anyways. I just measured mine last night. 57 3/4.

I think its time for an update... I have been posting in the performance and showroom sections, but I can't sleep so here I am.... The 8.8 is in, the stance is whack, and the wheels don't match but the car is hauling ass. It looks like ass too but thats next on the agenda... So is a 383 and ported heads :wtf:.... that means 9 second et's.
Installing the rear end worked out great. I had a local shop shorten it and transfer the volvo brackets over. Sent it to powder coat and then set it up with a ford trac-loc diff. I started with 3.73 gears. The car was a monster on motor but would not hook up on the street with nitrous... I now have 3.27's and a 2-stage nitrous system and the car hooks very well on the street and does 1.5x 60fts at the track. does similar 60fts on the street.... :-D the car is an ego crusher....
here is how the car is sitting now....

I have done a pretty big revamp on the motor aswell... I got sick and tired of the old lt1 fuel injection system. I went with a carb setup. I am still using stock heads and bottom end. The new setup consists of a modified victor jr. intake, msd distributor and digital-6, holley 750, modified 3rd gen camaro air cleaner and a 2 stage big shot nitrous plate. nitrous is a 175 shot.
best time slip so far was at the 1/4 mile track in ardmore.
1.59 60ft
4.56 330ft
7.07 1/8 et
95.12 1/8 mph
9.32 1000ft et
109.89 1000ft mph
11.19 1/4 et
120.74 1/4 mph
The tranny wasn't doing well that day. It didn't want to shift into 3rd... but I was super happy with the car that day. i drove the car about 120 miles to the track, ran about 8 passes, and drove it home. It ran perfect. The best part was I didn't make a single change at the track, I showed up ready to race.

My daily driver is costing me and arm and a leg to drive so I started driving the volvo a lot more. With no carpet, no insulation, and a bunch of holes in the firewall it was time to work on the interior. I also rewired the entire car using a 5 switch panel with a pushbutton starter and painless wiring 8 circuit fusepanel.
The large holes in the firewall from the old ac lines, factory wiring and heater hoses, plus the fact that i ripped all of the factory insulation out started to get on my nerves. The heat was rushing in and it sounded like a tin can inside. I was fed up. I also have had a vintage air universal a/c and heater box that I bought a while back and knew it would be useless without heat insulation.
I ordered 36 sq ft of second skin "damplifier"... a buytle based "dynamat" product
3 sheets of second skin "heat wave"... a double sided heat insulator
overkill? probably.. whatever I don't use i will install in my diesel
I have also had a NOS dashboard and nice glove box so I pulled them out of the garage, cleaned them up and installed them. everything in these pictures took me about 10 hours... im a loser.
I am very happy with the results so far, it no longer feels like i am sitting in a funnycar and the large holes in the firewall are sealed. I still have the floors to do.

Your 60ft are pretty good wondering if you hit the tens if you keep that up. I am sure you also love the 8.8 too. I know it makes big dif when you can lay down some good times. Your 60ft are pretty good wondering if you hit the tens if you keep that up. I am sure you also love the 8.8 too. I know it makes big dif when you can lay down some good times. I know I had a lot of heat transfer on my fire wall also. What is the temp rating on the insulator that you used. I am looking to do the same thing.
I don't think i can hit 10's without changing the heads or cam. The motor is taking the most nitrous it will. I pilled it up to a 250 shot and it did not get any faster. the timing is still super safe and I am running rich but I don't want to put the car on too close to the edge.
not sure what the temp rating is on the insulator... i do know after hours of driving the area i used the product is still cool to the touch... here is a link http://www.secondskinaudio.com/thermal-insulation/heat-wave-pro.php

Have you ever considered going back to fuel injection with something like MS to replace the stock GM stuff?

If I go turbo it will def. be fuel injected. one day.

Have you found out what the weight of the car is? I would like to know what kinda hp your putting down. My goal is to get the Bertone down to about 2800 to 2900 like I had my 242. That would be 700# lighter than a GN. :)

from the 1/4 calculator looks like your getting about 425 to the ground. I am sure it is off but still very good for what you have. I think if you swap out the bertone seats and hand brake console and few minor things you could see high tens. I would change the weight on the rims and few other things. every 100# is 1/10th , your very close. Also if you pulled your 60ft down just a hair too. I think you can do it. :P with what you have now. I know you don't want to break anything because that is down time and cost $. LOL I am just a poor racer that has to save up for few months just to get a deep sump tranny pan. :)

Not a problem...
First here is a comparison of the 8.8 vs. the Dana 30. The larger in each picture is the ford..

Housing Comparison
What I did was buy two Ford explorer rear ends from a truck wreaking yard. I think I payed between $150-200 for each one. The good thing about the late model truck rear ends is they come with 31 spline axles, disc brakes, and larger axle tubes when compared to the passenger car 8.8 rear ends..
Not to mention most of them came with limited slip units from the factory, which is easily identified by a tag on the rear end. It is a metal tag that hangs off a diff cover bolt, L indicates a limited slip. It also says the gears.
First thing was having one rear end shortened on the passenger side so the distance from the center of the diff is equal on both sided.
Then you simply transfer the brackets from the dana 30 to the 8.8 rear end.
Then assemble it using whichever gears you prefer, the limited slip unit, and driver side axles on both sides.

I used the factory brake lines all the way to the valves on the back. I just have stainless lines going from the valves in the back directly to the calipers..

Are you thinking the LSX block? You do have the advantage of a light car. Someone was saying that they were going to come out with a 350 lsx style block also. I would think you could find a LSX block in a yard or somthing not to hard to get good numbers with few parts. That blocks crank can handle it too. Threre is some good write up on building one of those blocks too. I will see if I can find it.

I agree with a 6.0 being more streetable, I was never planning on going big block though. A little M is just a Dart SBC casting, it is said to be good for 2500hp...

I agree with a 6.0 being more streetable, I was never planning on going big block though. A little M is just a Dart SBC casting, it is said to be good for 2500hp...
Yea, a 6.0 Iron ls block. I am very familiar with them, I work on them all the time :)
Ohh...i don't know why i thought you were going big block. Another question...how would you fit a turbo manifold on the sbc setup? Would it be any better on a ls setup?

he could put some shorty headers on backwards and run the turbo in front. That would be the cheap way out. Thats what we did on the 383.

I don't think you will have a problem. lol Your only few hundred pounds heavyer than my dads datsun and he does the same thing, 9.92. at sea level that is. :) Drives to the track blows the trailer queens away and drives home 30 min on pump gas.

And since I am sitting around saving money I figured I would do something with the car... Its not bad, I am using a torch, thinner, putty knifes and wire brushes. Its not a fast process. use a gas torch the small ones like for camp stoves or pipe brazing. You warm it up and scrape it off on the really thick stuff. I did that on mine too mine was not as bad though.

The inner fender is also clean, I just have to stitch weld it and throw some fresh paint on it. I might use undercoat, but i doubt it.

the "l92" 6.2l aluminum motors are out of the escalades and denalis ect, they also have the desirable heads.. most trucks are sold with an iron block. The flex fuel trucks also have an aluminum 5.3 motor.

Its fun, isn't it? I did that to the 740 a month or so ago, it took a while and its not perfect, but its a lot better.
I used a can of spray in bed liner for the fender wells, I'm not going to do anything with the rest of it unless it starts to rust, there's paint underneath the undercoating and I left that mostly intact.
If you're not afraid of making a big mess, a wire wheel on a grinder works fairly well, you'll want ear plugs and good eye protection, I also wore long pants and a long sleeved relatively thick shirt. makes a HUGE mess tho, I'll be spending time cleaning the shop as soon as I can roll my pos out.

According to what I could find, a bare LT1 block weighs 190lbs. My new aluminum block is just under 90lbs. So I figure with a 45lb turbo, and intercooler, ect... I will probably weigh about the same when I am done. Guys are telling me that anything under 1000hp with these aluminum blocks are fine. They have 6 bolt mains and a forged crank.

Yeah, this sucks... but I want to stitch weld the car, plus I am saving my pennies and not going out so I might as well do it...plus its keeps me excited about the car and doesn't cost much money at all... so for now I am just sitting here scraping gunk and grime off my car... saving money to collect parts.... getting ready to mock everything up....

yea, I am doing an 8 pt bar... Just a main hoop. down bars, door bars, and bars to the ds tunnel. Plus sub-frame connectors. Plus stitch welding. It should be pretty stout.
The mount points in the back look good. I will be cleaning all the gunk off soon to get a good look though.

At least you can take your car there to have them take the #s and bend the main hoop. You can do the rest pretty easy, I am looking forward to the cage shots. What I wanted to do on mine was the prostreet style, through the speaker trays and tight to the roof and post. I have seen some really tight cages that you could not even see in the car.
Bigbegum69
03-05-2009, 12:47 PM
yea, that's the way to do it... plus if you are in a pinch you can still use the back seat...
I snapped some more pictures...
The driver side is clean, i wire wheeled the seams with my angle grinder, I couldn't get all the gunk, I am going to get a wire wheel for a drill and see if I can get the rest... Then I will use my little Hobart Handler 140 to stitch weld the seams.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/driverside2.jpg
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/driverside1.jpg
after all that scrapping and cleaning I had to spray some paint.... I bought a can of that hammered finish rustoleam (left side) and some semi-gloss black (right side). I think I am going to do the inner fender in semi-gloss black, then the struts, lower control arms and sway bar in the hammered finish... its a nice finish, It has a lot of metallic in it so I need to be a little more careful when I spray it :)
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/color.jpg
I started cleaning on the passenger side too... it seems like it doesn't have as much undercoat as the other side, maybe I'm crazy.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/passenger-3.jpg
Got the struts and re-drilleed hubs all de-gunked. I still need to figure out a way to make a stop ring for the coil-overs...
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/strut.jpg
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/hub-1.jpg
And how about so wheel shots... old vs new... 14" stealies with 185/70/14's (laying down). 16x8 Ronal r9's with 255/50/16 Mickey D/R's (honey mustards) and 17x10.5 03 Mustang Cobra wheels with 295/45/17's (polished)

the new wheels came in today. I am not sure if I will like them on the car yet. They should look a lot better with Volvo center caps. I want everything to work with standard mustang offset wheels so I am going to use them until later on. Here is the plan for the fronts.
17x9 FR500 Mustang wheels. et26.
They will be narrowed 3 inches to 17x6.
Tires will be 205/55/17.
In stock form I put them on the car using a 1.25" wheel adapter.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/rim1.jpg
They cleared the strut tube with 7/8" clearance
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/rim2.jpg
They also stuck out past the fender about an 1", the suspension was at full droop though..
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/bigbegum/rim3.jpg
So basically when the wheel is narrowed and mounted directly on the hub it should be perfect. They will get sucked in 1.25" and with some negative camber they should suck right inside the wheel well. Plus I will have 2 5/8" clearance between the edge of the wheel and the strut tube. MONEY! :)

Sweet man- I pm'ed you. Keep in mind with bigger brakes you might not be able to suck them in as far as you'd like, as you'd need to watch caliper clearance to the spokes with the brembo's.

This system design was posted on ls1tech. It is basically exactly how my setup will be except for the headers. I am going to run stock manifolds that are turned around. But My intercooler will be mounted vertically, my radiator right behind it, then big turbo. pretty cool...
From ls1tech...
I dynoed my 6.0 in a superflow sf-902 engine dyno today.
6.0
9.8cr
E85
S480 1.32/ar turbo
And it made 1170hp/1180ft/lbs at 30-20 psi (dropping on high rpm to loose wastegate springs). And to small intercooler (194 intake temp).
Backpressure is 1:1 compared to boost
But a problem: I couldnīt rev over 6800 rpm, sounds like valvefloat or lifterfloat. I use PRC dual springs kit and LS7 lifters.
What do you think my problem is? I need to rev 7500 rpm.
